Yeah it did seem to settle down so I was a little premature in calling support but the numbers were so extreme. With that said, it seems my headphone jack isn't working correctly. Im only getting sound out of my right earbud. I tried three different earbuds (one old enough that it predates the iPhone so I know its not a specific iPhone earbud).

The replacement hasn't arrived, it was supposed to arrive today, but when I logged onto VZW to check the status I see a notification that I had to accept some set of terms before it can get shipped.

I'm a little angry over that, because they emailed me the confirmation yet hidden in a little box on the left of the webpage I spotted this. Really, they couldn't email me this.

Anyways since my phone is working ok, other then the headphones, I can live with it. I'll be sure to check out the new one when it does eventually arrive.

I'll also try one or two more headphones to make sure its ok, maybe its a stuck pin and I can fix it with a paperclip
Man your transition to WP8 has not been a smooth one. Hope it gets better. Is there a Verizon corp store close that could do the exchange/replacement for you?

I know exactly how you feel. I had that happen to me on tmobile years back, waited the whole week anticipating my new phone, only to find out that I had to sign off on some stupid acceptance clause that the rep failed to inform me about.

I just ended up cancelling the order out of frustration, plus a few healthy words for T-Mobile for their incompetence.

LOL, yeah but its more along the lines of VZW and not the platform. I'm happy with the phone (phone jack aside).

I am disappointed in the lack of synchronization tools/services for the Mac but I'm loading Windows in Vmware to give me the most bang for my buck

Stupid, that's all I can say. If I can get the phone jack working, I'll cancel the replacement. I'm more frustrated by the bureaucracy and then the lack of replacement is my phone is working much better now.

So I got notification via email that the phone finally shipped and is due to arrive tomorrow. I'm hoping and praying it works as advertised. My current model is ok, with the one major issue the headphone jack.

I examined it as best as I could and nothing appears wrong, but its only producing sound out of the right airbud. I tried 4 different headphones at this point all have the same issue.

As I posted earlier the battery has settled down but I cannot live without listening to my music, so I wait for the replacement.

Best of luck, I'm sure that will be fixed :) Keep up posted.

I'm still considering scaling down my 1520 to a 930 when it arrives here due to pocketability.

Thanks, I'm enjoying the phone, there are some apps I'm missing but overall the experience has been positive. Once the replacement gets here, I'll work on getting the phone fully customized to my needs.

Its due to arrive today, but of course I'm in the office, so I'll probably have to wait until Monday. I usually work from home most days, but because of a meeting I had to come into the office - stupid word

:p

I've been contemplating switching now for some time and if I was smart I'd wait until the fall but I'm not too bright sometimes :p

Anyways based on my other thread about WP phones on VZW, I've come to realize the best (of a very limited selection list) is the Icon. It is the current flagship and a great model. Here's where I struggle at.

The Icon on paper has just about the same specs as the Note 3. The camera is better and the AMOLED screen is reported to be better outdoors. The polycarbonate phone is said to feel solid and the display has an extremely high pixel density. App wise, its lack luster, though most of the major apps are available. Customization is quite limited though 8.1 opens up a bit more. The interface is radical compared to IOS and Android. Syncing my OSX/iTunes may be more limited compared to the others, though I'm not sure yet since I've not used one. Updates are pushed through by MS, so like Apple I'll not have to wait too long (I think)

Note 3, its been out for over 6 months, so in a phone life cycle, its middle aged. Android offers the most extensive ability to customize the phone (including rooting), its a great performer. I've heard knocks on its GPS, there seems to be an issue with that. This would be a major issue if its true. Updates come through the carrier and/or Samsung so that's a pain unless I go with the customized rom route. App selection is on par with iOS

iPhone 6, presumably if the rumors are correct, it will be a 5" (or there abouts) phone. It offers the best option for syncing and working within the OSX/iOS ecosystem. IOS is a good OS, though locked down. I have no major knocks on it. It does what I want it too. I'm not too jazzed up about the changes they made in 7.1. I think it made it a little hard to use some of the apps. I have low expectations on iOS8. I see Apple taking small incremental steps when MS and Google are looking for larger changes.

So there's my synopsis, I'm largely excluding the iPhone 6 since its not out yet but I can always wait it out until the fall.

I'm drawn to both the Note 3 and Icon, I've played with the Note 3 and its nice phone, I like what MS has with win8 but I've not had a chance yet to see the Icon personally. I'm concerned about the Metro interface, and how I'll interact with it on the long ten. I'm concerned about the Note 3's GPS (I rely on the GPS quite often) and its call quality.

I'd like some opinions for and against both phones. I'm hoping to do a side by side comparison later tonight or this weekend.

Edit:
One more thing, I'm not planning on embracing Google's service all that much if I do select the Note 3. That is I really don't plan on using their calendar and to some extent their contact app though I'll probably import my contacts as it will be more beneficial to keep their for dialing.

I do have an Office 365 subscription so that makes some of the transition easier for the WP phone.
I'd choose a Nokia Asha over a Samsung device ..... They are basically able to ruin every phone with a cheap construction and a bloated software layer over android.
If you want to try an android device, go for a nexus 5, or an HTC One (if the camera is not your primary focus), but forget about any Samsung phone.

As you can see I have a Lumia, and I'm very pleased about Wp8, but it surely is a young os that needs time (WP 8.1 will be a big step in the right direction), so the Icon could be quite intriguing for you to try.
Since you were considering the Note 3, why not a Lumia 1520 ? The best phablet on the market IMHO.

He's already purchased a Nokia Lumia Icon (930) ;)

@ OP

Have you had a chance to visit the VZN Note 3 forums? I would recommend you check this site out of you love to tinker. You can install ROM's that developers have created and learn how to root and get rid of Samsung bloat. Phone becomes a new experience after you root and install custom ROMs. Its worth a shot at least reading up on it.

google xda developers.com

The simple fact to have to root and flash a custom ROM on my 600$ device is enough to take the decision to buy another phone.

Icon or 930 ?

Edit: it was an Icon .... I don't like phones with carrier's brand

Btw my Lumia 925 doesn't have a real battery drain issue, but has a battery life comparable with the iPhone 5s (something between good and average I'd say). From what I know the 1520 is fantastic in this field. I don't know about the Icon, but according with the review I've seen, it should be a little better than my 925.

The 1520 has amazing standby battery drainage and impressive battery in general use, though I did push mine yesterday.

I used it as a sat nav with Nokia drive+ - so screen was on for around 4 hours as I drove to & from the airport and when I got home battery was down to 45%

In general every day use when I'm using my 1520 as my daily driver I go from fully charged down to around 65% battery left at end of the day.

When I'm not using it as my main phone I get around 5 days on a single charge....

You're a little late to the party :)

I have the icon, but it has some issues so I'm waiting for its replacement to be delivered.

I've used Android before, so I'm familiar with that, and was looking at the Note 3 because I liked what it had to offer. I may try the Note 4 in the course of time (once its released) but as it stands now I'm happy with the Icon, its a great phone. The form factor is nice, not too big, not too small. Win8 is good, and I'm looking forward to Win8.1

I personally love my note 3 and there isn’t a phone out there even now would make me leave the note 3 for. The only way I would leave the note line is if a 5’5 iphone completly wows me which it likely won’t as it won’t have SD space, removeable battery, widgets or as apple do they want it how they want it so making the home screen how I like it is what I want and nova launcher does that for me.

Notifications are still very good and that was my worry when moving to android. With the NILS lockscreen widget you get all your notifications as you would normally on any apple device.

The S pen is a big plus. I may not use it all the time but I use it for work and for passwords and log ins I need for work.

Scrapbooker for holiday and gift ideas is awesome...and how it syncs is great too. Granted I never use the multiwindow feature but it’s still nice option to have. So all in all It’s by far the best phone Iv’e ever had and it has zero lag. While the S4 I had before it certainly did at times. The extra 32GB of space is obviously important and the 3GB of ram is very nice to have too. So all in all if you can handle the size it’s the best phone out there imo.

Now I’ve got the note I could never go anything smaller.

The S pen is the feature I was concerned about in all honesty. My kids grab my phone to play games and I can see them losing the stylus. Its great idea and nice implementation, but for me I didn't see it being viable.

You can get it to alert you if the S pen is a certain decent away from the device in the settings. If you leave it down somewhere and walk off the phone will tell you by a alert sound.

Really, some sort of proximity sensor - now I'm impressed

It's the best Samsung phone for sure, checked out a S5 today and it is just a mini note, the back is not as nice as the note 3 and felt not as smooth in comparison. Will be interesting to see what the Note 4 will be like.

Yeah I love the back on the note, feels very smooth and I hope they don't have the same back for the note 4 as the S5. Doesn't look as good to me.

Note 4 will have big expections and samsung I think know thats their best device as they always seem to do more with it than the S lines.

I do love my big note and I hope it doesn't go beyond 5.9 inch device. I think 6 would be too much.

In a few weeks you will encounter WP 8 limitations, trust me.
Fortunately WP 8.1 seems to address many of them, and it will be released in the next weeks.
As a nexus and Lumia user, I can't say which is the better os, but for sure I can say that every os touched by Samsung is a mess (take a look at Ars Technica review of galaxy S5).

It will go .... Samsung doesn't care about usability. They just care about feature list, so they add roughly 0.2" at every iteration ....

Look at the S5 compared to S4: the new models seems to be the less modern. Bloated bezels and an uninspiring back cover.

I have the replacement phone in hand, I have to say the backup restore process was a breeze and I'm up and running.

The headphone jack is working and I'm not going to pay attention to the battery for a few day :p

I shot out to my local fed-ex distribution center to pick it up because my schedule is such that waiting until Monday was not feasible.

I'm happy with the OS, everything is working as I expected it too. The music synced over and overall its a great phone.

I don't think the battery is the strong point of this phone.

No its not, but I thought I had a defective one initially given what I had posted here (no need to rehash that). Suffice to say, I'll let the dust settle before worrying about the battery. The more important aspect was the headphone jack. I listen to my music all the time and w/o a functioning headphone jack, it severely limited the usefulness of my phone.

That is very good to hear. I know of a few others that had issues with the Icon's headphone jack. I suppose it may have been a bad batch and nothing systemic.

The back cover is just fine, feels very smooth in the hand. Even when they increase the size of the screen the phone stays the same size. Thats what makes samsung so good. Unlike HTC who made the screen and the phone bigger. It's not something you want.

There will be a limit with the note size obviously.
