I do like the word "gibberish"! You can do a lot of work on the "consumer" models and if that's all you can afford, and it works, why be forced up into a higher pricing bracket? Yes, the white book is fine but instead of going down in price and inheriting the 2.4GHz processor from the former middle of the range machine it went up in price and stayed the same. It's old tech .. and it's going up in price!
There's the rub, bub: IF that's all you can afford. This guy has been spendin' mad ducets, yo, on all of the tech gear and camcorders and whatnot -- he's a pro and he needs to just accept that fact. It has been stated many times, FIREWIRE lost -- USB won. The same can be said of the floppy -- people were pissed then, but in hindsight the writing was on the wall. PCs still ship with that legacy crap, how much respect do you have for that?

And a lot of people were saying the same thing of Apple in the mid-1990s: Apple lost, Microsoft won. Enough Apple loyalists stuck with them to give them a chance to create all the great products we have seen this decade.

The majority of people will always favor cheap crap over better but more expensive solutions. It's up to the people who know better to keep the market for better technology going.

What about the Mac Pro?
Nobody is talking about it, but it has not been updated since January 08.
Any rumours about coming hardware upgrades?
No rumors, but speculation points to early 2009 with Nehalem.

I think:
  • Gainestown Nehalem, up to 3.2 GHz (4 cores/CPU)
  • 3 GB Triple channel RAM, up to 48/96 GB (depending on modules)
  • New GPUs, 9600 / HD 3600 default, GTX 200 / HD 4800 BTO, Quadro CX (GTX 260 Quadro)?
  • Similar or slightly higher prices
  • Blu-ray if Apple decides to introduce it
  • Same or similar case
And then probably:
  • Early 2010: 32 nm Westmere (6 cores/CPU)
  • Early 2011: 32 nm Sandy Bridge (6 cores/CPU)
  • Early 2012: 22 nm Ivy Bridge
  • Late 2012 / early 2013: 22 nm another Bridge (significant refresh from Ivy Bridge)
  • 2013: 22 nm Haswell
My spidey senses are tingling.

When Apple update the 17" MBP to the new design, anybody else feel they might keep the FW400 on there along with the 800?

Push pro users who need both, (capture and storage simultaneously) to the larger screen?

Naughty Apple...
I can also see BTO matte displays as well as high-res (1920*1200 on 17") displays only on the 17". So perhaps the 15" MacBook Pro is moving down slightly in the consumer-pro continuum (while the 17" stays where it is). All for the same prices.

3. 17" MBP...I've a feeling we'll be seeing a quadcore in that thing. Apple positions their products so that the upgrade to the next model is attractive and that would be the one thing that we already know is doable and is missing from Apple's laptops.
I'd hope so (MacBook: consumer, 15" MacBook Pro: professional, 17" MacBook Pro: power user), but I doubt it, due to low clock speeds and high TDPs.

I’ve been following this site for more that 2 years & never joined until tonight. :) …I’m still amazed at the accuracy of their sources. I swear Mac Rumors Now. :D

Wonder if it is worth waiting for Macworld 2009 to get the MBP 17"... AppleInsider (I think) said that MBP 17" would get some more improvements at macworld 2009.

You think its worth waiting or shall I just get the MBP 17" now?

I am replacing an old Sony Vaio laptop that is on it's last legs so I am in. I guess you can get caught in that trap of waiting for the next processor bump and never buy a computer but I'm past that. January will be here pretty quickly though and it's tempting to see what might be offered. I know I'm going to be sitting there in January trying to stuff a Blu-ray into my Macbook.
