So what are they going to show us at macworld? Hmmmmm????

A very good question... Probably can guarantee a 64GB iPod Touch, 32GB iPhone, and "one more thing" will be a new "netbook" style Macbook with 10-12" screen, dual core Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB SSD for $799. Let's see how close I nailed it in 3 months :D

No tablet models, no intermediate 5-7" device running the iPhone OS, just a simple netbook...

What about the Mac Pro?
Nobody is talking about it, but it has not been updated since January 08.
Any rumours about coming hardware upgrades?

it will be realeased in a new case that incorporates the LCD, it will be really, really shiny, use laptop components and 1.8" hard disc drives.

I am new to the forums so please take it easy on me. This is my first post. :)

I don't have the time to scroll through to see if anyone answered you yet but...

In late Q4 of this year Intel will be releasing the Nehalem Processor for Desktops and Workstations. These new processors will offer many advantages over existing processors and are believed to be included in the next revision of the Mac Pro.

As a result it stands to reason that Apple will either release the new Mac Pros just before the holiday season, or much more likely just before or at Macworld '09.

If there is anyway that you can hold out until the new Mac Pro is released I would absolutely recommend that you do so.

Although there is no rumor suggesting that the casing of the Mac Pro might change I would hope that they do change it (as many other members of these forums might hope as well). These cheese grater look is getting a bit old. One might also hope that Apple delivers an update to their monitors as well (beyond just the new 24 inch LCD update they just delivered on Tuesday). I would imagine, however, that Apple would most likely EOL (end of life) the 20 inch monitor or update it to a LED backlight with the new look and iSight camera and update the 30 inch monitor when they can put an LCD in there at a semi-reasonable price. Of course there is always a chance that to "update" the other monitors Apple just drops the prices down a bit (which has happened before) but I don't think that will happen this time.

Hoep this helps you and best of luck,

You forgot one of the losers :
Apple - Crippled Macbook (No FW), Macbook Pros (No Matte Screens)

which produces another loser : - ( The Customer who wants the above features.

I am with you, though i do believe the lack of firewire will push many to the MBP.

I am really upset about no Matte Screen and NO BLU-RAY!!
i want both, at least to be able to read BD discs, and pay for higher end version for burning them.

Apple has really been setting up different models for different consumers, remember the macbook integrated graphics chip? so now with the better graphics chip, they take away firewire from lower end macbook.

oh well, seems like apple isn't perfect, so i wont be buying this model, hoping they make some revisions at macworld, ie matte screen and blu-ray

Maybe Macworld can be Blu-Ray's coming out party with apple. who knows?

Relative righting

If you're going to show the relative price drops for the older macbooks, you should accurately report that the $1999 Macbook Pro dropped to $1599. The $2499 model dropped to the $1799 price point that you reported in the most recent post.

The 2.1GHz white book dropped in price from $1099 to $999. It didn't get a new processor, but it did get a SuperDrive in place of the combo drive. How is that "going up in price?"

The price did not fall from $1099 to $999, it actually went up from £699 to £719. By my reckoning that is a price rise of £20.

Did you not get the memo? Apple loves the US and hates everywhere else. Always slow to drop prices when currencies shift agin the dollar, but quick to raise them when the opposite happens.

finally

was waiting for this type of thread to be posted! now we know what to trust when updates are due!

Your thinking about where you live... where I live ,,, the price increased. You do get that don't you? It went up in price. Price ... went up! That is how "it went up in price"
You must of heard, on a pretty much regular basis that Apple screws it's European market ... surely? TVA or VAT or Sales Tax aside ... we are screwed on every occasion in comparison with the US. You've heard that or read that at some time surely? Well ... this is one of those occasions ... the whole range went up in price.... considerably! The rest of the world is subsidising your price reduction. I wont lecture you on this. It's counter productive but at least know it.

Anyone who has "lots of expensive MOTU interfaces and massive FW HD's for music, storage, back-up and libraries, not to mention DV cams etc" should be in the pro arena. The physical size difference is minimal, and the price is too in the overall scheme of things ["expensive interfaces" and "massive" HDs"].

The size difference isn't minimal to me. I went from a 12" iBook G3 to a 14" iBook G4 and and was dismayed at how much extra weight and volume I had to carry around. That's one of the big reasons I went back to the 13" Macbook. I recently went to the Apple store to check out the new models and there's no way I would choose to lug around one of the new MBPs. I'd pay a premium to get a 13" model, but not 15".

The home page image omits the plastic MacBook. That one is likely to be downright popular with schools if for no other reason than wifi reception and case damage resistance.

Can they plastic wrap aluminium?

Rocketman

Where is the Mac-Mini case with three drive bays and routers for the top three standards, USB, Ethernet, FW, and also happens to be a wifi base station? It's not all that hard! Charge me the Apple premium for it. Please.

The biggest loser is missed in the article - we the public. Prices have risen to what they were 5 or 6 years ago! No high tech does that! Plasma TV's are 20% of their cost years ago. It beggars belief. No FW is a very ominous sign as well. I have lots of expensive MOTU interfaces and massive FW HD's for music, storage, back-up and libraries, not to mention DV cams etc and so the argument that their not needed is imbecelic. A MacBook is a pro device in comparison to what was termed "pro" of only yesteryear and it's the best a lot of people can afford. So stop robbing people of doing what they want to do at the lesser price Apple.

Steve Jobs seems to fancy himself: Apple = the Rolls Royce of computers

I wouldn't have any idea, but I would assume R.R. stay at a high price even as technology advances.

I looooove hearing the words: "Kevin Rose = loser"

Could somebody please leave me a voice mail message reading it out? My number is: (519)520... :p

plastic

Not rumors, but much speculation (mine below).

For MWSF 2009

Nehalem, Dual Gainestown (quad core): yes
Displayport: yes
DDR3: yes, up to 64 GB
Blu Ray burner: no (awaiting Final Cut Studio support later in the spring)
New chassis: probably, derivative of current unit
LED backlit 30 inch Cinema Display: yes

I haven't a clue about graphics cards, but I could use a midrange nvidia Quadro or ATI FireGL card.

Pricing: same, or a bit less

I will have waited along time for this particular Mac Pro, so I'll be ordering when it arrives.

And a black plastic apple on the side = HOTT!!

Would moving to the US be cheaper than buying a Mac?

Did you not get the memo? Apple loves the US and hates everywhere else. Always slow to drop prices when currencies shift agin the dollar, but quick to raise them when the opposite happens.

Same in Australia - $1499 to $1649 AUD. The aluminium MBP and MBs also went up in price in comparison. Meanwhile, when the Aussie dollar was trading at $0.95USD, the prices remained the same - unfortunately when I purchased my MBP.

Apple needs a little work in their currency conversions. The new MBP is currently $1999US. Which at the current conversion of $1AUD=$0.70USD, puts it at $2839AUD. So why on earth is the Australian price $3199AUD? That puts the currency conversion at $1AUD=$0.63USD. This is lower than the October 10 fall to $0.65USD, which was the first drop since April 2001. The Australian dollar has been consistently rising otherwise.

I'm not sure what its like in the UK or other countries. But Apple are making a ton of money off Australia in notebooks. You cannot tell me it costs $300AUD to ship each laptop from China (where they are built) to Australia. I hope they don't follow suit with the desktops...

Yeah, it's a bit off; unfortunately. Anyway I'm still getting a Macbook Pro, once they're in stock in Domayne. They've got 15 months interest free! :D

So what are they going to show us at macworld? Hmmmmm????

I'm hoping to finally see an updated Mac Mini, with the new processors and a SuperDrive, or even a Netbook like what other people were saying. Perhaps a revised iMac model too.

Welcome! Your post was quite interesting.

Yay!

slowly getting disappointed with apple

i have several apple products and looked forward to the new laptops. i was very disappointed to see totally overpriced products. taking away features like a f/w port from the macbook? a $2000+ macbook pro with no blue ray etc?

jobs is losing it. so what if the main part of the computer is made out of a solid block of aluminum with only a 1/1000 inch tolerance?!

even though i really dont like windows, i just ordered a sony vaio fw series notebook which has a 16 inch screen, 4gb , 320 hd, HDMI, blue ray, f/w etc etc. for only $1200!!! paying a little bit of a premium for being able to use OSX is ok, but the price difference of over 1000 bux, if the MBP even had these features, is rediculous.

jobs, get your act together or you will start losing some of your most faithful customers.

what about rumors of colored aluminum bodies?

Weren't there rumors about colored versions of the MacBook? I thought I recalled on the eve of the announcement a screen capture of (I think) a BestBuy inventory sheet showing 'Purple,' 'Green,' 'Orange,' and so on...along with part numbers.

I personally think that colored bodies are next on the horizon. Colored anodized aluminum products are all over the place, and it's not a tough nut to crack. I can see Apple releasing colored MacBooks in 2009, a la the iPods. It seems like such a natural segue. But they have to walk before they can run, so it makes sense for Apple to get the core manufacturing process down and worry about color later. I would say that a mid-term refresh of pricing and specs (sometime in 2009) will see a debut of this offering.

Nice 1st post. Welcome TheYanks1903, I agree about waiting till after xmas, would be good to see the 30" with updated technology but I sincerely hope the look is a subtle revision of the old pro aesthetic.

The whole new look is what I have a problem with, I started to worry when I saw the imac and the 3g iphone with the cheap plastic back instead of aluminum, the whole taking inspiration from craptastic pc vendors like alienware is definetly not my idea of 'think different'. If it's the price product design has to pay for bigger marketshare I have to ask is it worth it?

I hate to see classic, timeless pieces of design replaced with things that just aren't as good.

I sincerely hope apple can admit they've ruined a design classic in the new mac book pro and the next case design simply refines the old look perhaps taking advantage of the 'brick' process but keeping the squared off edges, all silver and thin bezel. And most definetly not the two tone bling bling.
