You are not getting old, i for the most part do agree, but also understand that beauty is in eye of the beholder, i consider myself lucky, i had a front seat to most of the changes from the 80's to today i had the opportunity of using and working with everything, Unix mainframes, be boxes, sun micro, SGI, Nexstep, Even Alphas before Compaq butchered them in, but at the end, some things change with the OS, some of the Mac os first versions looks quite dated by today standards. same applies for almost every os i worked with.

There was already Mac apps like BBEdit that served me well on Macs.
I am not against having more options, but I still wouldn't use a vibe-coded app.

I can't speak for any other platform, but for windows, its heavily used in my organization - I mentioned previously I prefer ultra edit, but notepad++ on windows is incredibly popular (at least in my organization)

You are on MacRumors. Not Windows rumors... That ugly thing is a Mac port, of another ugly thing from Windows. So I presumed you need some editors for Mac. Windows? Neah, I haven't touched that since XP.

Never used Notepad++.
Long ago I discovered Multi-Edit from American Cybernetics. I paid for a couple versions as they updated it (last version purchased was a 2008 release). The company is gone now. But my copy is still going strong. One the things I loved about it and still use it is the strong search and replace functionality, traversing all of a file structure. You could also choose either Windows, Emacs or UltraEdit command sets, integration into other compilers and much more.
The second oldest tool I use would be BeyondCompare.

Speaking as someone who uses VSCode quite a lot both professionally and personally... I can think of one particular issue which some people might have with it: Microsoft's ownership. Just as some people don't trust Google and attempt to avoid all things owned by them, some people don't trust Microsoft. And of course, there is overlap between those groups... probably all the more so when you're in a discussion forum predominantly populated by Apple users.
Unfortunately, it's nigh on impossible to extricate both Google and Microsoft from your digital life entirely; too much critical infrastructure is owned by either one or the other.
Worst looking thing I’ve tried to use on a Mac in ages. I downloaded when it came out and just thought “oh, I guess this is what a Windows power user app looks like. Yikes.” and then immediately deleted it.

I'm not sure if it's higher standards or just wanting something that matches the conventions of each operating system.
I used to use Camino over Firefox (until Camino was discontinued) because Camino has a more native look and feel. Firefox looked more at home on Windows.

Well since I am not a "Windows" user, I would not spend money on a text editor for Windows, but every once in a blue moon I will use Notepad++ on windows -- but it sucks compared to SubEthaEdit.
