Having a Notification light is more handy than not having one at all, those that don't like them could just turn it off fully, or in my case have it setup to things i want it to like messages or missed calls not news feeds or anything like that.

I don't constantly stare at my phone all day nor do i carry it around with me at all times, so having a light to tell me i missed something would come in handy so i could get back to that person straight away.

I don't see the logic in some people not wanting one.

Actually that would be cool, or better still just the outer ring lit up.

Most android phones have it already and have done for a while now, but apple could make it better patent it then SUE SUE SUE!!!! lol :p
My 2009 HTC Touch Pro had this (a LED ring). Flashed in a circlular pattern whenever I got a notification. That was one of the really cool things I miss about that phone.

I'm curious to know though in which situations a notification light would be superior than to just press the lock button and see if you have any missed calls? Although that's not to say I won't appreciate a notification light for my future phone, but it's not something I've missed when using my iPhone.
Here is a situation. You put your phone down on your desk at work and you walk away for five minutes where you can't see it or hear it. You get a missed call, a text message and an alert.

You walk back to your desk and glance at your phone and you see nothing. Until you press the button you have NO idea that you have received any kind of messages.

But if there was a notifcation light you would know immediately when you came back to your desk. Maybe not WHAT, but that you did have messages.

I've missed more messages with my iPhone 5 because I came back to my desk and ASSUMED I had none because my phone does not indicate that it does have messages.

That argument that all you have to do is press the button and check the screen is bogus. My phone should visually inform me without me having to wake it up to check that I have messages. This is one of the things I didn't care for when going from my Touch Pro to the iPhone 5.

There are some people who do not always have their phone on them. I leave it sitting on my desk most times when I step out of my office. When I get back it would be nice to know if I missed a call or an important text message without having to constantly turn the screen on all the time to see if anything has been missed. Lots of times I get back to my office and start doing something else only for someone to call me and say hey didn't you get my voice mail, and I didn't think to check my phone to see if I had one. For some yeah this may be old school and for some this is not needed or wanted, but you can always turn that feature off like you can on the Blackberry. That is the one feature I miss the most is a notification light. 1000 times yes, I hope on the next iPhone they implement this. I just don't understand why Apple will not do this. But it is also not a big enough feature to make me switch to something else either. I just wish I had the option on my iPhone to use something like this or not if the iPhone had that feature.

You can already sort of do this. There's an option within the Accessibility menu that uses the LED Flash for notifications, however, it doesn't "repeat".
I'm quoting you simply as a lead in to jailbreaking.

I'm jailbroken on iOS 6. For anyone who is or is capable of jailbreaking, there is a tweak called FlashEnhancer (which I have) that takes the Accessibility LED flash feature a step further. FlashEnhancer allows you to specify how many times the LED repeats and how fast it repeats. You can set it for calls (incoming/outgoing), messages, email, push notifications, etc. There is also another LED tweak out there as well that works, but does not give you the same fine control.

But if you're on iOS 7 you'll have to wait for the jailbreak.

My biggest issue with the LED notification is that because it's not a real notification light, if you lay your phone down on the back like I do, you still miss the flash. I appear to be a minority in the fact that I lay my phone down on it's back though, so this may not be an issue for many of you.

there is a setting for repeated messages notification.

Just so long as Apple makes it easy to turn off. My stupid work Blackberry made it VERY hard to turn off this annoying "feature."

You'd think there'd be one big "no lights" switch, but no, I had to turn it off for each and every kind of thing it could represent.

Stupid.

And no, I still don't understand the point of it even after all the explanations in this thread.

True. You can set it to repeat.

But what happens even when you set it to max and you're not there to see the last flash (it happens, I've stepped away from my desk to talk to my boss and ended up being gone for 40 minutes or so)?

No actual notification light that stays flashing or lit until you clear the message or indicate to the phone that you've acknowledged it is currently an option with the iPhone.

If you're jailbroken you can set how fast it flashes too. But it's still not the same as a dedication notification light itself.

The LED ring on my old Touch Pro STAYED flashing until I acknowledged my messages.

this doesn't use the LED flash tho. Without having to touch the home button your phone just keeps alerting you up to 10 times until you acknowledge it. i like this better than having a flashing LED.

I'm sure there will be a jailbreak to set the repeated alerts to infinity until you acknowledge it. :D

My Galaxy Nexus had a multi-colored LED.

Red = low battery
Blue = Email
Green = Text
White = Missed call

Sitting in a meeting and a quick glance at the phone gave me the info I needed. No ring or vibrate.

My Galaxy had an app that automatically turned on/off features depending on location.

Car = Bleutooth on, wifi off, notif and call volume 60%.
Home = Wifi on, bluetooth off, volume at 75%
Work = Notify LED only, bluetooth off, Wifi on.

I like both platforms but the notification options on IOS needs work.

Oh! I get you. And yeah, there is a tweak for that allready.

My problem with this is that it's intrusive. I'd rather have one notification with a permanent light (of some sort) versus being hit with the same message multiple times.

It's supposed to be a 'bug' (as in bugging you), a reminder that something is waiting, not a repeated sledgehammer to the head.

But that's just my opinion.

They are only against change until Apple tells them they want it. Then it's super cool.

LOL! Yep, same with the larger screen on the 5. I remember some throwing a little hissy fit that if they made the screen larger they would leave!:p

They will have another change when the iPhone 6 comes.:D

Had an LED on my S4 and really liked it. I do miss that feature with my 5s. Someone should be able to figure out how to light up some pixels on the main screen for missed calls and texts. Emails can wait.

iPhone screen is not LED - its back-lit, therefore turning on a few pixels out of all is impossible.

It's like Push vs Fetch.

If you have an LED blinking subtly to tell at a glance that you have a message, it's pushing that message to you (constantly making it aware at any glance).

If you have to pick up and wake your phone to check it, that's like fetching notifications from your phone.

I think it would be functional and look nice to have an LED behind the home button, although all chances of that have gone out the window with the touch ID. Still, an LED wouldn't hurt anyone.

like blackberries back in the day? one feature i missed coming to iphone. also hate how it doesnt silence notifications while on a call.....

yes and my wife is blind so he has voiceover yacking too it is pretty silly to have an alarm go off for 30 seconds while trying to talk on the phone.

Notification light are so old school. I for one am glad it doesn't have one.

You're glad it doesn't have a feature that you could easily turn off and never be bothered by, but would make millions of other people happy...

Brilliant thinking.

Perhaps something "new," like instead of a notification light that blinks, perhaps a quick flash of a ribbon across the screen every minute or so while it's asleep. I'm sure batter drain would be minimal and of course you can turn it off.
