Really?

How is it old school being able to look at you phone from across the room and see if you had a message/call.

What would it hurt for Apple to add a tiny LED for this function?

For those who it would offend, you could turn it off but I am betting a multicolored LED that could be programmed for multiple functions would be very tempting, even for those who think it is old school.

Just remember how so many were against a 4" iPhone screen and now love it.

A 4.7" iPhone 6 will darn near kill some of you, but it is coming!:p

Had a great tweak on my old blackberry that changed the notification led light for different correspondence (ie. email, text, etc.) and it was fantastic. If you carry your phone upright in your shirt/jacket pocket you can see the light flash and know what you are getting. Aside from more storage, maybe a bigger screen, this is pretty much the ONLY hardware feature i want/miss from any other smart phone out there.

I had no mention of GS in my post....it was entirely limited to iPhone...the fact it doesn't have a LED screen so lighting some pixels = impossible

Well then where are you getting the idea of "lighting some pixels"? None of the other phones "light some pixels" either.

edit, i see where you got it. You weren't trying to help or contribute, you just wanted to point out a flaw in the other posters response. However, you were responding to a post about a GS phone.

And no, I still don't understand the point of it even after all the explanations in this thread.

So you don't understand something like....i'm out in the yard doing work for a few hours and then I come in to grab a drink. I glance over to my phone on the desk and see a notification light, or no notification light as I walk out the door with my drink to get back to work.

If you can't see how some people in the world would like that convenience then you are just being stubborn.

I hardly ever use the one on my HTC One. I find it more annoying than useful.

On my blackberry it was very useful. I could keep my phone on my desk and the very subtle notification LED let me know when I had something I had to check. I wouldnt be checking my phone every 5 minutes when I was expecting something if there was just a subtle glowing ring or even a small white LED somewhere on the phone. Similar to a breathing light on a mac.

Being also a X-Blackberry users we both see the value in a programable LED for notification. It still amazes me how closed minded some of the Apple people are for any change.:p

I love my 5S but still miss the far superior notification system of the Blackberry but I am not going back!

It's like Push vs Fetch.

If you have an LED blinking subtly to tell at a glance that you have a message, it's pushing that message to you (constantly making it aware at any glance).

If you have to pick up and wake your phone to check it, that's like fetching notifications from your phone.

I think it would be functional and look nice to have an LED behind the home button, although all chances of that have gone out the window with the touch ID. Still, an LED wouldn't hurt anyone.
This is an excellent analogy and a very good summary of the issue.

... it should pulsate slowly, like a MacBook in StandBy. The color of the LED should be white...
Yeah, I like this idea. I liked the LEDs on the last generation of webOS hardware-- relatively subtle and tasteful compared to the "old school" blinking colored LED. It pulsated rather than blinked. (the thin white horizontal strip below the screen.)

Some of those renders of TouchID before the iPhone 5s was officially unveiled kinda looked like the ring around the home button could be lit via LED and used to show notifications-- that would be rad.

Agreed. I compulsively would turn on / check my iPhone for notifications. Especially if I was away from it for a moment. I have been far less of a compulsive "fetcher" since I started using my HTC One, since, at a glance, I can see if there are notifications.

Perhaps something "new," like instead of a notification light that blinks, perhaps a quick flash of a ribbon across the screen every minute or so while it's asleep. I'm sure batter drain would be minimal and of course you can turn it off.

Motorola has already implemented this. So I guess Apple should too, so we can all talk about how cool it is.

I would chose notification symbols in my status bar instead ... I don't need the carriers name up there - for what reason!?

I'd prefer tapping my home button and seeing a small badge saying email, Facebook and messages for example, since I don't have some apps notify me on the lock screen.

I wouldn't mind having a notification led on my iPhone. Located somewhere around the FaceTime camera.
