How do I change the HD icon on the desktop? I have Leopard, if that makes a difference.

A bit o' Classic. 
I was able to easily access our older G4 iMac, through File Sharing (it works so well in Leopard), to grab these pictures from the Classic System Folder.
Also, I just purchased CandyBar 3.0 from Panic, since I already have had Transmit for a long time. These guys make great apps IMO. With the new version of CandyBar you can easily change Dock graphics and other stuff. Really nice actually!
