But now that I've had a solid day with this thing, I realize that Apple rode the ragged edge on acceptable power consumption to make this design work.
I agree, it does feel like the iPad 3rd gen is pushing what Apple could produce. I do wish there was a little bump in CPU power so there was no question about performance vs. the iPad 2 in games or other intensive activities.

So if anyone has noticed, the reason why Tegra 3 tablets lag compared to even iPad 2s is due to the lack of graphics processing. Most of the time the dual core A5 processor is enough for central processing since it handles all the numbers. The real magic behind the GPU is that it speeds up render speed on the screen so whatever is processed appears faster. While the CPU bump in speed would have been great, it's the difference of a second or so of processing time so the overall effects on battery life would have cost nearly 15-20% of battery life additional drain. I think the 2012 iPad is really balanced and while the limiting factor now is the li-ion batteries, it's going to be a while until we have portable fuel cells.

Incremental upgrades. One step at a time.

Just enough of a technology bump to get folks to buy it.

Not too much of a bump so the price and margins can stay in the sweet spot.

Yep. That's the Apple game plan. Frankly they are so far ahead of their competitors they can afford to do this with the iPad.

Next year will be a redesign shell more CPU but most likely same screen. This screen is good for next 2-3 years unless they want to come out with smaller size.

Keep in mind that this was the iPad that was rumored for the fall in 2011 alongside the iPhone 4S. I can't remember why it got pushed back but I remember reports saying Apple would release in the fall, and that the real iPad 3 would come like normal around this time. Regardless I upgraded from an iPad 2 and have now owned all 3 iPads, and every upgrade has been worth it to me. I love the retina display here!

I've been using the heck out of my iPad 3 and have no complaints about the speed yet. No lag whatsoever.

I agree with this. I'm usually a perennial upgrader when it comes to mobile devices but the inclusion of the retina display this cycle made me upgrade from the iPad 2 and I am so glad I did. This display is indescribable; it's definitely one of those things you have to see to believe.

Agreed!

I have yet to see a a app or a game expect infinity blade that uses the full duo core power, let alone on a quad core...

I have no idea why you people are crying over a quad core. Would you rather have a Tegra 3 with its 4 CPUs and 12GPU cores and still performs like a dog? A5x is still the best mobile processor on the market.

meh

More than quad-core, I was hoping for a Siri in the latest ipad.
I do not own a iphone 4s, but I heard its lot more fun talking/listening and its kind of good for kids 2-10 to pass time. This helps watch screen less but still get the entertainment factor needed for kids especially.

Waiting to order online the latest ipad.

People keep talking about Siri but can you imagine people in train stations or on the street (with wifi access checked for one available) holding an iPad to ask about the weather?

Is our society so devoid of fun we need iPads to let kids 2-10 play with Siri?

Dictation on the device is getting very good reviews. It will improve and be as important as the gorgeous screen display as more people discover it.

It's nothing but pure nerd porn to want a quad core cpu. The device runs great and heating would be a problem but people just want to say, "it has a quad core cpu."

You know who you are. :p

Yes. Its the future. I remember how I was so embarassed taking my first cell phone calls in public that I either didnt pick up or arranged to call back later in a more private place. Now obviously everyone does it and no one even notices.
