I have used iMessage once and I didn't think much of it. Being able to message people with iPads and iPod Touches is a great concept, but it is something that I don't personally require. Whatsapp is probably my most used method of messaging.

No I left my plan alone, a lot of my close family members/friends do have iPhones but not all of them. But I do believe I have unlimited texting. I wonder if turning off iMessage will make battery life even better.

Did not have to cancel. I never had an SMS plan to begin with. I'm sure that I am in the minority since I rarely send or receive text messages. I just pay as I use them. Last month I got 2 messages, one was from ATT. I prefer to call people since I get the instant gratification of getting an immediate reply.

We don't have a text plan. I use text free when I need to send a text (a rare occurrence since I prefer calling and actually talking to someone), and now that we have iPhones my wife and I will be using iMessage. I guess we can now officially enter the 21st century.

No. Reasons being I can't cancel it, and none of my friends even have iPhones, only a few have iPads but it's not like I'm ever going to message them on that.

No, not every one of my friends and family has an iPhone.

And ironically, those that do, only a handful are running iOS 5, the rest are still on older firmwares that do not support iMessage.

What a ridiculous thread. Maybe if everybody used Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp, Kik Messenger, etc (and that still doesn't cover feature phones) but this is the iOS equivalent of saying that having BBM on a Blackberry is enough to cancel texting.

Honestly, When I was still on my BlackBerry I didn't have texting at all. 95% of the people I know have a BB. Infact, a few were ticked at me when I switched to iPhone.

I still miss BBM but texting and Whatsapp seems to be working well enough for me.

Nope. iMessage is fairly useless to me. I've used it twice and then turned it off because it wasn't working properly. Never bothered to turn it back on again.

Exact same thing for me as well -
What exactly is the purpose of imessage, what is it good for, how does it improve the iphone4 ?

It gives you free texts between iOS users... Problem is the carriers are catching on and have removed the smaller texts packages (or at least AT&T has). So if you do text outside of iOS (almost inevitable) you get to pay for the unlimited texts anyway.

Only a few people I know have an iPhone so iMessage is pretty much useless for me. Those who do have iPhones are not running 5.0 so I get charged a message each time I text them.

Nope. As everyone else has said about 85% of my friends have different phones that iPhones.

Same here. If I send/receive 20 messages a month, that's a lot for me and I do mean A LOT. Typically it's less than 10 and someone else initiated the conversation. If I don't need a quick answer, I email. If I do need a quick answer, I call. The cheapest text plan Verizon offers now is $10. At $0.20/msg (which is still a ripoff but that's another topic...), I'd have to send/receive more than 50 messages every month for the text plan to be the better deal and I just don't do that.

I cancelled my $15 a month text plan, and turnned off iMessage- it was way to slow. Put the $15 I saved aside in a savings account, the funds will be used for my next iphone:D

I use Google Voice, plus WhatsApp for all my texting.

See, you have the right idea. Google Voice can replace SMS, not iMessage.

Nope. Totally non-disruptive as most people don't have iPhones. I do let it switch to iMessage automatically, it's a little faster, but no material difference from SMS.
