I would only use iMessage if it had a setting to be the backup, not the preference. It will never make sense to cancel unlimited texts on my family plan for limited data on a per line basis. As long as iMessage uses my data plan, it's just too expensive. I want to use real SMS/MMS exclusively if I'm not on wifi, and even on wifi, I'd only want iMessage to kick in if I try to message an iPad or iPod that lacks SMS. But you can't set it up that way so it's useless.

I cancelled my AT&T texting plan.

iPhone people reach me through iMessage.

Everyone else gets my GoogleVoice number.

Works great for me.

messaging hardly uses data.....

you could send like 7,500 - 160 character messages and use ~1mb of data. Considering even the smallest data plan offered is 250mb, I doubt ANYONE needs to worry about wasting their data on messages.

Correct. Plus, you've got the advantage of it working more reliably when you've got a weak signal and wifi. I had that situation yesterday at a family gathering, we had an in and out 1 bar and full wifi.

yeah, the ability to use wifi has saved me a few times as well. Overall iMessage is nice, and I use it, but it's not a replacement for sms plans unless you only talk to people with iPhones.

Not killing the unlimited text plan despite many of our friends and family having iDevices, though a stubborn few still have RIM and Droid devices.

The wife and I are grandfathered into unlimited data on a family plan with AT&T. We've had unlimited texting since day one (combined, we can send a few thousand a month), and these days unlimited texting equates to unlimited mobile-to-mobile with AT&T.

It's nice to have "unlimited" choices. ;)

You're in New Yawk and you wonder why people have non-iPhones??? Really? If I was down there, fat chance I'd have an iPhone, I'd be on Verizon 4G LTE.

I got the $5 text plan on my wife's line and don't have one on my line since 99% of texts I send are to my wife. The few other texts I just pay the 10 cents per message so it usually ends up being a dollar or so extra per month.

Sure, the text part is only a few megabytes per month. But we send a ton of pictures and videos through MMS, all "free" thanks to unlimited messaging. iMessaging just doesn't make sense as my primary texting medium because it can't be my sole texting medium. It'd be an ok backup if I'm on wifi or messaging a non-SMS device, but if I can't justify canceling my messaging plan, I can't justify iMessage.

I can't really. Contracts in the UK are not really bundles like in US. We just have set contracts. Like I have 2000 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data. I can't downgrade any of them. I'd have to downgrade my entire plan. Most of my texts still seem to go to none iMessage places as well.

T-Mobile is the only one that really does bundles

The majority of my friends have iPhones with the exception of a certain few. However, I'm waiting on my girlfriend to get the iPhone since she has a BlackBerry now and she is the one person whom we text heavily back and forth. Once she switches, then I am cancelling my text plan altogether. Doing that will end up saving me $120/year.

I never had a text plan. I hate texting. Talking is way more efficient. The only time I text is when I am in a place where I can't talk.

*Many* of the people I text regularly have iPhones. But my teenage daughter has friends that don't -- for that very reason we'd have to keep it!

See, you have the right idea. Google Voice can replace SMS, not iMessage.

I do this too. I also use the AOL trick add their cell number as an IM contact in Google Talk/Trillian (+1phonenumber@aol.com).

No most people I know limited data plans so they don't want to use iMessage. I guess texting plan is cheaper than data overages but I doubt it would use a lot of data.

None of my friends have an iPhone. But we use GoogleTalk to text each other. I use IM+ for this.

No, because no one I text has an iPhone. A couple have iPod Touches, but the problem with them is that they have no 3G, so you they can only send and receive texts when they're on WiFi. I do use iMessage a fair bit to talk to those on the iPod Touches, but usually I just use my texts ;)

I get the unlimited text so I can have the unlimited mobile to mobile calling that's included. If I lowered my texts I'd have to raise my minutes from 450

Only about 7 of my friends have an iPhone so it would be so pointless to cancel my texts from my contract.
