From the report:

Windows 7 did little to slow the Mac's sales trajectory during fourth quarter, according to NPD. Year over year, Apple doubled US retail unit share -- from 5 percent to 10 percent -- for PCs selling between $500 and $1,000. More startling, Apple increased its unit share from 79 percent to 90 percent in the market for "premium" PCs, meaning those selling for more than $1,000. In July, I reported that Apple's revenue share for PCs selling for more than $1,000 was 91 percent, because of higher average selling prices; nearly all Macs sold for more than $1,000. Now Apple benefits from 90-percent unit share, too.

Truly amazing. Anytime anyone quotes the..'well...Apple only has 9 percent share of all comps' then just come back with this and it puts things in perspective. As far as Macs are expensive...well if you definitely buy an 8 core. If you are a multi-media/3D/graphic artist type, and you go with PC, the price will also be over $1,000. So, can't say PCs are cheap. Check out the better Dells/HPs/and Alienware. The decent ones are easily over 1K.

That quote is by betanews, and not from NPD. If the NPD numbers tell us anything, it's that Apple computers are more expensive than other PC's, and that Apple is over-charging for what they offer.

Good for shareholders, but not for consumers.

When consumers hand Apple record quarters in Mac sales, they are choosing Macs despite the availabiity of cheaper options.

Looks like these people see Apple as a greater value proposition in the long run. I don't see how this is bad for consumers. They are actively, willingly, choosing Apple, despite lower-cost options.

There is no such thing as "over-charging." Apple is charging what the market can bear. If they were over-charging they wouldn't last very long. And now that they've dropped in the iPod, the mid-to-low end of the market is likely going to get a major shakeup.

what a coincidence...
90% of all expensive German cars sold last year were Mercedes!

This makes sense since only us, crazed Mac users, are willing to pay above $1000 for a computer...

Other, normal folks, spend way less and get more powerful hardware :D

Ah well, I still love my :apple:

Yeah I guess that's why the HP Envy I saw at the store the other day is close to 2000 dollars.

I'm not surprised. Most people who spend 1000+ on a new pc just build their own because they're hardcore gamers.

I was just talking yesterday with my boyfriend about our first Macs we bought over two years ago. I asked him how many times his Macbook Pro broke down... he said none. My iMac never broke either, nothing that a restart would not take care of.

Amazing, huh? I wonder if we bought PC's, we may have to be looking for new computers by now.

I'm still on my first laptop, from 2007 ish but definately before june 07, and it's running Vista, quite strong. I built this laptop specifically for my need.

Well when all of apples computers start at over a $1000, what would you expect? This of course doesnt include the mac mini. The poor man's mac. Now if only they could add hardware specs to their +$1000 computer line to actually justify the cost. Oh wait, Im not buying it for high end gaming or top of the line hardware and performance. Im buying the brand and elegance of owning a mac. I actually had someone tell me my macbook pro is for serious computing. I said like what...sycing my new ipad to the latest itunes bloatware and then tweeting about it on safari (once it loads the page) Please!

you might want to go read some of the other articles. Apple "Record quarter" was not a so much of a record. It missed it target on a lot of sales.

It record came from the fact that it changed it accounting recording so they got a one time boost in the numbers from all the money they had set aside before hand. Accounting rules changed. They did not announce the change and let the press and apple fan boys run wild with those huge numbers. Go read on the other articles on Betanews that point out that little tide bit.

If the numbers are too good to be true chances are they are. I question this 90% number. It seems almost to good to be true.

Ha, this shows how smart Apple is. They know they will never compete with Microsoft in marketshare so they target a niche and work on that niche. Meanwhile the PC manufacturers are going broke and struggling while Microsoft is getting all the money. Good thing Apple only depends on themselves.

Apple problem:
The market for 1000 Dollars+ Comps was 5 Comps in 2009. People tend to buy stupid, cheap POS Comps for 300 Bucks.
So roll in that second gen, 300 Dollar iPad! And don't forget the front facing camera!

Which target did Apple miss sales on, everything was up for them from revues to profits to numbers shipped with the exception of ipods. Ipod touches were up 50 percent, ipod revenue even went up 1 percent.

+1

I build my own and spent well over $1000 on my last PC, but ~$500 was on the video card alone. I wanted to play Crysis at high detail with decent frame rates. The people I know that purchased a computer last year only bought a computer to surf the web, get email and sync their iPod. Some play games but do not care about graphics and frame rate. They all spent well under a grand for their computer.

Thank you for the sane way of looking at it! This article means nothing really!
