Microsoft is such BS, like when they were suing TomTom- "Microsoft has said previously that Linux and other open-source programs violate more than 200 of its patents."

Software patents in general are BS.

What's the final verdict here, is Snow Leopard support for NTFS read-only?

A developer build of Snow Leopard had NTFS read/write access out of the box. Not sure why Apple removed it.

I always have problems when writing onto NTFS hard drives. For some reason copying files on NTFS files takes a lot of time.

Hmm maybe it was a kext, what version was that?

You can get write ability in SL if you install MacFuse which is part of VMware Fusion or as a separate download for free.

I've installed it, did some testing and it seems fine

I installed ntfs-3g but the pref pane is all greyed. I wanted to create a new ntfs partition on my external disk but it failed :(

Um, yeah, dude, you need to unlock it. You also need to either reboot or "Unmount" then "Mount" in Disk Utility to get it to mount using NTFS-3G.

NTFS-3G and SL don't go well together. The NTFS-3G process is using 50%+ of CUP power constantly..

I dont have this problem but I have another one. I'm trying to partition a free space of an external disk but it fails.

Only reason I need NTFS support, is to keep a pirated copy of iLife09.dmg on an external backup drive used by SL and XP.

I figure Microsoft would be up for that.

NTFS is garbage.

ZFS is the future of filesystem support.
Maybe NTFS is garbage. But there are many (most) external drives formatted with the FAT32 filesystem which is IMO absolute garbage (e.g. you cannot write files bigger than 4 gigs)! So NTFS would be the much better option for cross-platform usage of external harddrives since Windows cannot handle other file systems than NTFS and FAT. So IMO NTFS support is a must-have for any future MAC OS!
