Personally, I think Apple should introduce this functionality in a much more elegant way: simply have the wireless chipset act as an Access Point with DHCP and have that take requests from a laptop. Perhaps have a key appear on the iPhone's screen a la iTunes sharing for security reasons. Of course, this would require that AT&T give Apple its blessing for tethering....

Now if only Apple will get in touch with the little guys and bring back Great Apps such as "BoxOffice".. Or at least give the guy an idea of what their deal is with the Application.
Hmm... didn't they post something to their website about looking forward to a new movie app? They even shared the name of it. It seemed almost like they pulled box office and were waiting for the new app to show up on the AppStore. I don't imagine Apple would have pulled the program for any reason on their part... what issue could they possibly take with it?

I don't remember the name, but it was pretty obvious, so I just make a habit of watching the AppStore for that sort of thing while waiting for it to appear. In the mean time, BoxOffice is running just fine on my iPhone.

Edit: Just read an article about it in which the author said he didn't know why it was pulled from the AppStore. It didn't provide a link to the home page, of course, and you can't get that link through the AppStore anymore...

I think Box Office is returning to the AppStore as "Now Playing" very soon. I don't understand the reason behind that, but I recall seeing that name floating around somewhere.

In the meantime, its pretty obvious that Apple doesn't have a clue about what its doing right now. Steve Jobs outlined in an internal email that basically admitted that launching Mobile Me at the same time as iPhone 3G, the App Store, and iPhone 2.0 was a huge mistake and has stretched the company's resources beyond their limits. Granted, no one has ever DONE anything like this before so its difficult to to really judge what they're doing.

At least there's still a healthy community for jailbreaking. If the demand to develop on this thing wasn't as strong, there's no way Apple would be pushing this movement so forcefully. Once again, its the developers that save Apple.

I've backed my .ipa file up just in case, dont want this mysterious disappearing act happening to me...

our of interest, when you back up an ipa file, is that the whole application including settings and the like? i.e. the same stuff that gets backed up when iTunes "Backs Up" your iPhone? or is there a separate place for settings/savegames etc?

Honestly, as much as I love to have Netshare back in the App Store, I highly doubt it will happen for obvious reasons. For those who bought it and got shafted, you'll get a refund and Apple will pay a lump sum to the makers of Netshare to have them off the market. But it will come up in a different form when 3G gets jailbroken (again).

Its was on Friday night, downloaded it....works fine while iPhone screen is on but as soon as it sleeps cuts connection for me :(

I clicked on the link that mac forum provided when it reappreared on itunes, but it was only available in the usa, when i logged into the usa store and tried to purchase, it wouldnt let me and logged me back into the UK store.

Are they going to post an update on their website on the Progress. For somereason I feel we'll never see the light for this app.

I really don't want to jailbreak as it renders the applecare useless.

...No other smartphone allows tethering without a monthly cost. I'd love it if the iPhone were the first, but I don't expect it.

That's not exactly true. I have been a Verizon customer for many years now and have been able to freely tether to my Motorola Q (both the original and the Q9m) for the last two years. You can find the hacks online to do it but I don't have time to go through the many steps to make it work so I purchased PDAnet (~$35) and it was very easy to use. This was the one issue that made me unsure of the switch from the Q9m to the iPhone as tethering is invaluable to me. I have decided to take the plunge with hopes that this gets worked out.

Believe me using the tethering is not a way of surfing the internet by choice. It does beat out dial-up but thats about it. I hope AT&T sees that tether will be the exception and not the norm so network usage should not be dramatically impacted. You can't (we'll shouldn't) be on the network with both devices simultaneously so I don't see why this is an issue for anyone.

I was one of the lucky few who got Netshare before it was pulled. But I cannot get it to work. I beleive I am talking with the app through my Mac, but there is no internet connection through 3Gor otherwise. Can Apple have disabledthe program's access to the AT&T network? Thanks.

nope works fine. check your settings again.

What is Apple "working" with Nullriver to come up with? I don't really understand. If the app works what kind of "agreement" are they going to come up with?

when will it be up!!!

When will NetShare be back up. I'm goin to maine tomorow and were driving there. which is like a 10 hour drive. I would love to have that app for the car ride up there to use with my macbook pro. if anyone has any update as to when this app will be up, please reply.

I followed the directions, carefully. I can, seemingly, ping the iPhone, but in the Netshare app, I noticed 0 connections and the connection speed meter was zero. I established a Safari page to test the 3G connection. But my Mac is not going to the net. Does iPhone firmware 2.01 make a difference? That is what I am on, currently. Thanks.

Mine is not working anymore in 2.0 using either Netshare or the terminal hack.

EDIT: Now it's back. Not sure wha happened.

ATT needs to bring tethering to the iPhone... or NetShare needs to get on jailborken phones.

I am currently running netshare at this very moment with an original iphone. I must admit this program works well, actually surprisingly well. Web browsing with edge on my mbp is much faster than on the iphone itself. What gives?

My guess is the browser render speed.

I fully expect Apple to reimburse the purchase price if they take away the app from people who already have it.

Asking them to ALSO reimburse you for an AT&T service you never paid for is absurd.

Agreed. I think if anybody no longer wants the app as its been pulled, Apple will probably refund them. Contact Apple about that one, otherwise go find some money hungry lawyer who is willing to take on such a ridiculous class action.

And yeah... ridiculous. No chance Apple would be liable to pay for you to use mobile internet.

Before you start thinking class actions, ask Apple for a refund. I’m sure they will oblige.

Can someone tell me what the " Connections " are to in Netshare? Are they external or to your ad hoc network? If they are to the ad hoc network, then how come I can ping my phone from my Mac, but Netshare shows 0 connections? Thanks.
