Number one reason....portability. I was carrying a 13" MacBook everywhere I went. I had to have a tote rather than a purse, and it was heavy.

Another benefit of a iPad/iMac combo instead of a MacBook/iMac combo is only one iTunes library. My iTunes library is huge and keeping it organized can be difficult. With a MacBook, I have to make sure I transfer what's in its library over to my main library on the iMac.

It's an iPhone with a huge screen and therefore more functionality.

A top reason for me was the quick on for a product that is conducive to taking notes with. The iPhone is only good for the briefest of notes, and a laptop takes time to start up, open a program, etc.

My vote goes to 'quick on'. I also have a 13" MBA and have owned an 11" MBA. Have to say for portability the 11" MBA was close to the iPad BUT the sacrifice in battery life was too much for me hence why I chose the 13" MBA. The iPad is not a laptop but I do use it more than the MBA now.

I want an iPad but I can't really motivate myself to get one. If I have a laptop and an Iphone, what is the number one reason for getting an Ipad as well? :)

If you enjoy reading the newspaper, think about the following:

The iPad edition is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. (my iPad 1 will pay for itself in 5 years)
Your Significant Other will not give you grief for leaving the papers out.
You don't have to remember to halt delivery when you travel and then have to buy it a second time at the hotel.
Your hometown paper may not have an iPad edition, but Democrats have the NYT, Republicans have the WSJ and people with ADD have USA Today.
You may find the interface more intuitive than the hardcopy.
Less ads.

But the best reason...

....when the hardcopy would be buried under a foot of snow in a blizzard, yours is there at a touch of a button. :D

If you're a regular traveller, it's a great companion for keeping up to date.

Especially if you already have to travel with a work laptop and don't want to have to carry a second one. As airplanes get more crowded the iPad gets more valuable (there is a reason Apple stopped making 17" MBPs).

I'm tired of OS X. I want something light, portable and practical. My 2006 MacBook is old and wants to be put down, even though it still works amazingly well.

Sold my MacBook Pro for a substantial margin over a refurbished iPad 2, which I purchased. I'm returning for some classes this fall at the local college, so I figured something less bulky and smaller would be nice to have as opposed to a full-fledged laptop. Well, that, and I sold my 1st gen iPad a while back and found out that I simply wanted one again.

For me, portability was the #1 reason (but there are so many good reasons).

Doesn't matter how light your laptop is. It can't match the iPad for portability.

I just bought mine, should be here in a few days. My reason was because I want to make games for it. I'm a game development student and a big touch-screen gives a lot of possibilities.

1. Magazines. The apps with Retina support are gorgeous.
2. Magazines. One magazine I want to read is free, online, in PDF format. Looks great on the Retina display.
3. Long-form web reading. Friends' blogs and stuff. Much more convenient than my computer chair for reading.

My number one reason is portability. I can go anywhere in or outside my house, and I'm connected. While my MBP is nice, its a 15 inch so it rarely gets moved from my desk.

Ever since I got my iPad, my MacBook Pro turned into a 100% desktop computer. I take my iPad almost everywhere I go, the portability is just amazing for all the things it can do.

My number one reason...

Well, that branches into 2 categories really. The iPad IS a beautiful media viewing device. I have to admit I love the asthetics of it and the feel of it.

My main use of it: Reading Tech RSS through Pulse reader at night and playing Zynga poker before I go to bed.

I am retired and take a couple of trips a year. I used to use a laptop but find the iPad so much more convenient.

I watch movies or listen to music on flights, check emails, keep in touch with family via Skype etc, book flights and hotels etc, archive photos, read books on the beach, surf the web for local information, use maps to help find locations, use the HDMI connector or a component video connector to conect the ipad to a hotel or condo tv (for netflix, hbo etc.), the list goes on. My grandkids use the ipad in the car when we take them on trips. All I cannot do is heavy duty Aperture or FCPX type work and dl torrents but otherwise it can pretty much do anything a laptop can do in a more convenient package.

Using 3G abroad can be very expensive but I find that there are many free wifi places and I only use hotels etc that have free wifi.

I have had my ipad2 for about 14 or 15 months and would never go back to using a laptop. In fact I now use my laptop as a media center on my HDTV.

Bought it for all the apps, web browsing, books, etc. Now it's laying in my flight bag, and only 2 apps are used (Cloud Ahoy, Foreflight). It is seeing use maybe once or twice a month. Transformer Prime does everything else for me.

Last year, when I didn't have one, I would have my laptop hooked up to my monitor on my desk and be sitting on my bed and want to look something up... i'd have to use my iphone which, let's face it, isn't nearly as good to look up stuff on as an ipad.

I saw a use for it in classes too as I would write notes by hand (because my laptop was too dodgy to last through a class). I haven't used it as much in class as I would have liked to, but I have used it for writing assignments at times by hooking up my keyboard so I can watch movies on my laptop. It's also replacing my kindle after it died (i swear technology hates me this year) although I prefer my kindle.

I also use it at the gym. I'd much rather watch my own tv shows/movies than watch something the gym has playing.

That said, none of these were the reason I got it. It was a gift as we were going overseas and we weren't able to take laptops. My younger brother got wifi only and a smaller one, but because I'm a student and dont' actually have wifi where I live, I got 3g and a larger one.

I've always loved making flash cards for class (i'm a nerd lol) and never liked digital ones, but i'm finding that is changing with my ipad.

Because it is more Mac than their desktop and notebook line, which as of right now is just a glorified PC with an Apple logo on it.

I'm a huge Android fan, I currently use the HTC ONE X, but I've been the biggest iPad proponent since it released. The device just works so well. It's more enjoyable than a laptop because of the ability to run apps, and I feel I have no limitations in terms of functionality. Sure some areas of speciality such as photo or music editing are more difficult, but for everyday use I prefer my iPad over my MacBook any day.
