Not necessarily indicating that Apple isn't affected. HP, Dell and Asus are dealing with the problem in varying levels of activeness; thus, acknowledging the problem. Apple -- not so much.

Not trying to totally invalidate your claim, as I'm trying to stay optimistic too, because I'll need to buy a new Macbook Pro soon, but it just seems too risky and problematic at the moment with various individuals and groups denoting problems with their Macbook Pros.

Moreover, the Macbook Pros are using the chipset that is affecting Dell, Asus, HP and other PC laptops. As ominous and powerful as Apple can seem sometimes, they aren't immune to the problems of this chipset.

Here's to hoping that a solution will be found soon, so I, too, can join the MBP user group.

For you I would just go buy one Apples good With their Service Just go buy it dont worry

After 3 months with my MBP (SantaRosa) the logic board died as well. And my computer runs very hot under some not so intensive apps. I would like to think its just a fluke but after seeing this article and hearing all these stories it makes you think.

Which model do you have the 2.4ghz with the penryn or last years merom?

I hope my computer goes up in smoke, leaving the HDD intact and then I get can upgrade to the a new machine...

Okay I'm a bad person. :(

OMG!!! Everyone sell their 8x00 GPU MBPs now! Geez, some people freak out too easily.

Okay, so if I sell my MBP, what do I get? Another machine that can run FCP plus a long list of other applications that I need a portable Mac for? Oh yeah, I can buy a MacBook with a smaller, lower resolution screen so I can squint even more at my viewer/canvas windows and not have FW800 and dedicated graphics memory. I don't think an alternative solution exists for me and as I could imagine, many others. There's a reason people bought MBPs instead of MacBooks.

My MBP is only 2 months old and has 3-year AppleCare. Every time a recall has been officially put into effect by Apple, they have taken care of their customers, even out of warranty. I have a 12" PBG4 that got a free replacement battery two years out of warranty, even though my old one was working with no problems.

I really think a lot of people are overreacting.

jjahshik32, I've been reading that many OEM's are now advertising and taking orders for montevina laptops with the upcoming quadcore intel processor, for instance Zepto will release a laptop based on the montevina with the quadcore and nvidia 9800M GTX in august, do you think we will see the quadcore processor in the next MBP?

If so that would make it a much more future proof product, specially when Snow Leopard is being designed to utilize multicores so much better.

Your missing the point, they reported that its "all" nvidia gpu's that are defective.

Eventually they will fail within the next year or two and if lucky 3.. what worries me the most is that I wanted to keep my laptop even after apple care and what if my gpu doesnt die until the 4th year.. then i'm totally screwed.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

A computer that eventually dies or wears out???? The horror!!! I want a MBP that's guaranteed for 7 generations of my descendants! :D

Everything made by man has defects, flaws or life spans that are shorter than we would like. The fact is that any computer more than about 3 years old is, by most standards, obsolete. If you doubt that, look at resale value! You're better off donating a 4+ year old computer to a school or charity than going through the hassle of selling it for pennies on the dollar.

I'm not worried at all about the NVIDIA problem. I have an Apple Warranty and AppleCare coverage for 3 years. Before that time, I'll probably replace my MBP at least once, for a newer, faster model. If something breaks before then, Apple will fix or replace it. As for now, I've had exactly zero problems of any kind.

Well I'd still like a mbp that I can keep around even after 3 years and still function and not worry about its gpu dying.. pretty much either one of them gpu or cpu dies its game over.

Also I'd like to use it for 4 years ideally and sell it but if its defective and breaks by then I'd lose the $900-$1250 I could have made from selling this current mbp to use towards a brand new one.

Just look at the age old powerbook g4's their value is still incredible even after 4 years. Even the lower ghz powerbooks still going for $400 or $500 well after 4 years now.

I know electronics arnt built to last forever but I'd expect this mbp to last at LEAST 7-8 years. Electronic parts these days are suppose to be long lasting and durable and there are people that still run 10 year old macs just fine.

Just to pitch in on this, as I've had a few issues with a 3 month old MBP. It's the previous generation top end 15". So I guess dates from the end of 07 - came with a Leopard DVD rather than preinstalled.

I've had the text breaking up / screen flicker issue - often really bad. Have been following a thread on the Apple support forums here :

http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7617817#7617817

Towards the end, someone has mentioned that someone at Apple has confirmed (albeit anecdotally) that it's down the the nVidia chips.

I also have another isse with the screen's rendering of certain gradients - so areas can look kind of blotchy - basically in the yellows / oranges / pinks the gradient isn't smooth. Not sure if that's related.

Have also had the issue a few times where the current user is logged out when user switching.

And more recently my USB ports seem to be playing up - they weren't recognising flash drives. A PRAM reset seemed to have fixed it, but my iPod isn't being recognised properly.

Basically just seems to be one thing after another just now.

I'm philosophical in that I accept things will always go wrong in a minority of cases, but it's frustrating just now because neither Apple or nVidia have fessed up to anything - but it would be good to have a machine that worked as advertised!
