they look quite close.... but I really have no idea what them mean - and regardless the card is huge so it must be MUCH more powerful!

Dont tell me you have less than 512MB of ram or something...

but i have definitely noticed imporovments in working with Maya and Cinema 4D

My guess

I'm guessing that it is an artifact og the beta version of cinnebence - it is not totally held in high regards... also I probably do not have much to challenge the ssytem with software wise - Soldier of fortune II on highest everything played fine - so on that note - the power is there.

Plus new drivers are in the works for 10.3.6 I hear.

sweet... yeah, hopefully Maxon'll put the code form C4D r9 into a G5 version of CB

i cant wait until software companies really start taking advantage of this hardware, the 2.5 as well as the 6800

Driver

Well, I need the driver disc. Can anyone email me the driver since i only took the card out from a BTO machine?

Thanks.

I'm sorry to say, but all these Cinebench results are disappointing. These scores show no real benefit over a 9600/9800XT when you will be using it for Cinema 4D. BUT the story is quite different when you will be using this card for Motion/AE/games. So a real world comparison between different cards in those apps will show it's power. So don't buy this card for the wrong reasons, not every app will benefit from it!

I am using C4D and have no reason at all to upgrade my card now unless the drivers/OS-implementation of Open GL will be dramatically improve,
or when I will buy a 30"...

Sounds like the 6800 drivers are not optimized at all. Remember my scores on my PC 6800?

That looks more like it dmglover! I hope 10.3.6 or 10.4 will bring these scores to the Mac!

UT 2004

I downloaded the demo version of Unreal Tournament 2004 and tried it out with my 6800.

It's awesome. Everything turned on to max and the fps are around 80.

UT2004 is also a demanding game.

Is this 6800 GT card a significant upgrade to what is presently available. Will they ship this card beginning in November on all orders or is this going to be an upgrade with an additional price? Will there be a noticeable difference in the screen view?

The 6800 GT DDL is (as pointed out on MacBidouille.com)
20% cheaper and 10% less powerfull than the 6800 Ultra DDL.

A good price/performance ratio, and more choices for consumers.

Homeworld 2

Homeworld 2 FULL everything - at 1920 X 1200 on 23inch screen! (2.5dp)

is an absolutely beautiful game!!!!

I loved the demo so much I ran and bought the original....

So weather you like the game or not - the 6800 card does show it's power here!!!!

Poor Xbench/Cinebench Scores

I too ran these benchmarks with my 9600xt and then my 6800Ultra. The 9600xt had a better composite Xbench score and the Cinebench scores were about the same for the h/w gfx tests. I saw the game benchmarks on the web so I believe there should be an improvement with the 6800Ultra. I'm running UT2K and BF1942 and max everything with no problem. However, it was playable with my 9600xt too. I didn't run any game benchmarks since I'm not familiar with the standards for doing so. What's a great resource for conducting them?

Got my 6800 ultra installed last night. My 9600 pro oem performed better on cinebench and xbench. I don't care whether people say those 2 benchmarks are not optimized for the 6800. This is just an excuse. This card does not have appropriate drivers and this needs to get fixed ASAP by Apple or nVidia. This is ridiculous. 😡

Hello everyne. I just would like to say something. One, when a new product hits the shelf PC or MAC the drivers are in there youngest state. The PC market is just finally getting optimized drivers for the 6800. So we should see better drivers coming. The one thing I do wish would happen is we could get the referince drivers from nvidia. Also you should put the 6800 and the 9800 together and bench them with the first drivers that came out for the 9800, you will see how slow the 9800 is with infent drivers.

We should not get caught up with worring about whether we have the 1st set of drivers for the card. Bottom line is the 6800 ultra DESTROYS the the 9800 XT, 9600 XT or any other card for the PC except the X800 series. Why would we all purchase a card that does not perform. The drivers are not optimized. LOOK AT MY PC SCORES for the 6800 in earlier posts! I understand everything is relative as it should be for the SAME platform. So right now the fastest card in order for the MAC is the 9800XT, 9600 XT, and last but not least the 6800!!! I just got off the phone with Apple and they " are not aware of any problems and do not believe in 3rd party benchmarks" Of course Apple spent months telling everyone that the G5 was the world fastest PC.

😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

No noise

I can detect it at start up - but once it is going I can not tell there has been a change at all.

🙂

Any real world reaction on how much noisier the 6800 is?

video card sucks!

Got the card!

I thought this thing was going to be faster than the card that came with my G5.

I do lots of 3D and was hoping to be able to hang with the pc's and their blazing fast video cards. Nope.

With LW the card sucks!

I waited an extra month or so for the card a few weeks for the g5 spent 600 bucks on this thing.

Sure would be nice if they'd write some drivers.

Guess I'll have to wait for tiger.

well @#%@%#%#%#^$&%&$&#&^# Damn

You have to feed that thing, what speed G5 you have?

dmglover,

I just received a 6800 Ultra for my 2Ghz G5. It is already making a huge difference in games and other OpenGL viewers I tested.

I ran BF1942 Demo at up to 80 fps with low AI and low bots (limit the cpu). Definitely faster than my 9600 Pro at that setting. At max AI/bots, I ran at 20-30 fps while my 2ghz athlon MP with GF5700 ultra ran at 10-20 fps. The G5 and its memory bus showing here.

Run OpenMark on your Mac (http://www.giofx.net/osx/) and your 6800 PC (http://www.giofx.net/win/misc/OpenMark.zip ). Let us know what you get (should be close). My G5 6800 was almost twice as fast as my PC 5700 ultra. And this is with the 'Mac tax'.

Try running the GioFX Chimera Engine viewer (can show fps). I ran the Stardock on both Mac and PC and again the 6800 showed its power. At 1600x1024 at times I would get 1400 fps. I had it near full screen with windows overlaying it, and it still ran at 60fps! This is with all the window shadows on the 3D image composited by Quartz - which must be at 60fps. This card has legs! At least with my driver the PC version must be limited to 65 fps.

Despite what Apple told you, there are some minor bugs in the driver (bumpmap with the vertex programs selected has issues in Chimera on 6800 only). The 10.3.6 update may fix this. Also, professional apps use commands that Apple does not support yet (why low C4D, SpecViewPerf scores).

If anyone want a FRAPS like test of their card, use the 'Opengl Driver Monitor' include in the Developer CD. I posted how to use it in the Games Forum.

I would be very interested in how the speed of the 6800 ultra compares on a PC in basic capability.

Hope the results make you and others feel better. I am sure the card will be worth it in gaming and as apps get updated to use it.

As far as the noise goes, the cards fan is the loudest part of my G5. I would say it is surely less noisy than my 687G4 Quicksilver, but not the silent machine it once was. I would not have it on the desktop (if anyone really does that).

Cheers!

Can anyone tell me where i can find fps benchmarks with the G5 single 1.8 and 6800 for games like Raven Shield, Call of Duty and Battlefield 1942? I was going to buy the G5 2.5 but if I can save some money and buy the low end G5 and still get higher then average fps on those game I will just buy the 1.8. Computer would mostly be used for surfing web, games and web design.

G5Guy

I ran the OpenMark benchmark on the nVidia 6800 Ultra DDL, then put the ATI 9600 Pro back in my G5 and ran the benchmarks.

I have not had a chance to run the benchmark on my PC. I am in the process of upgrading my case.

Here are the number;

nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra Open GL Engine
1680 x 1050 x 32
Score 322

ATI Radeon 9600 Open GL Engine
1680 x 1050 x32
Score 228

The nVidia card is quite a bit faster on this test, Thanks very much for pointing me to software.

By the way, here are some pictures of the nVidia Card for the Mac, PC, then at the bottom is the ATI 9600. The PC version of the 6800 has 2 Molex connectors that requires connection to the power supply.
