Hi,

inspired by this forum, I have upgraded my Macbook Air, which was originally equipped with an 128 SSD.

I bought the Sintech adapter (short version) and the 500GB Samsung Evo 970 (no plus or pro) with Firmware 2B2QEXE7. On the Macbook OS 10.15.6 is installed.

After installation, I copied my existing system with Carbon Copy to the new drive. Everything seemed to work. However, sometimes I get these fatal errors:

Code:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff7f9683e231): nvme: "Fatal error occurred. CSTS=0x3 US[1]=0x0 US[0]=0x4 VID=0x144d DID=0xa808

Under normal conditions, everything works fine. However, under high processor activity, I always can reproduce this error. Can this be a heat problem? Fans are running at 100% then.

I had also tried a different adapter (Kalea) with the same result. Can the SSD have a fault or is the Samsung EVO generally not a good solution?

Thanks for any help or experience.

The Samsung SSDs have been reported to run hotter than other NVMe drives.

The speed of the Samsung is limited by the PCIe 2.0 x4 bus in the Air too.

Does this happen with a clean OS install?

Yes, with a clean instll as well!

What could be a "colder" alternative? Are PCIe 2.0 still available and a better solution?

Can one read from the crashlog, what is the reason for the error? Heat or something?

Thanks agan

PCIe 3.0 drives are backwards compatible with PCIe 2.0 buses.

The crash log indicates a problem with the NVMe kext.

I used an Intel 600p (older, discontinued) drive in an early 2015 13" Air for about a year and no issues at all. Speed was faster than the stock drive and battery life went down by about 10%. It remained quiet during normal use. I never used the Air for anything really intensive.

Have a look at the first post here for a possible drive replacement: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/upgrading-2013-2014-macbook-pro-ssd-to-m-2-nvme.2034976/
