Just explaining the exact numbers, the iPhone tariff includes a fair usage limit of 200MB on the O2 network and 60 hours on The Cloud per
month. In our calculations on typical page size and usage this combined would equate to 1400 pages per day.

It's a pity that Mathew Key didn't have the decency to make this clear at the launch. Instead, the way he explained it was misleading to say the least.

Even if the 200mb limit for EDGE per month is reasonable, it is hardly unlimited (particularly if Cloud is not an option) and the way it was presented is shameful.

Eww. I have two iPhones on my AT&T account.

I guess I would consider myself atypical, but the other user I would put in the typical category no doubt. I do streaming from my desktop and other intensive things, but the other user sticks to news, reading message boards, and a bit of YouTube and no business quantity of email with large attachments like myself.

Each month since launch day both phones have exceeded 200MB of edge a month. That's with home Wi-Fi. I suppose that would be less if AT&T had included hot spot access I could grab near work, but 200MB is quite easily reached on the iPhone.

I just don't get how o2 can lie like that to the costumers. They say "unlimited" and then you have a 200MB cap on it. What is up with that?

Fair limits and average usage

Just as an FYI......

I average about 150MB of edge a month or about 5MB a day. (I bought the phone June 30th). I use the phone at home on wifi. Outside the home, I use the map feature about once a day, and look a few websites/rss feeds per day, check email, occasional stock updates, etc. Not too heavy.

Cheers

Everything I hear from O2 seems to add up to one thing: A dreadful deal for a great phone...

I'll probably end up getting v3 like I did with the iPod...

That seems exceedingly poor on the part of O2. Does anybody know if "typical" usage is likely to exceed 200MB?

My first month with the iPhone I hit 240MB, but I haven't come close to that since. I still consider myself a heavy user, but due to the slowness of EDGE, I only browse WAP or Mobile sites when I'm on EDGE. And now I have a better idea of WiFi spots.

I think last month I hit 60MB on EDGE.

but you can get a 3 sim card (pay n go one this applies to since the contract ones wont work as iphone is 2g) and use oranges edge network which has the best coverage for edge ad get unlimited access to edge for just £5 a month - and the fair usage on this is 2gb a MONTH.

is EDGE that slow? I have a 3g phone, Witch the speed is ok. but i i couldn't use something slower than that. How much slower is EDGE?

I consistently get in the 180-200kbps range. That's not super slow in my book, but I just have better things to do with my time when I'm on the road than to wait for pages to load. This hasn't been a hinderance in anyway, because my old phone was even slower. I'm actually quite amazed at how fast EDGE is on mobile optimized sites... I'm just way to busy to stare at a loading screen, even on a desktop... maybe it's just my ADD.

I dont think I have ever exceeded 20mb a month, but I am not doing email on it.

200mb over EDGE would a SLOW proposition.

No, the iPhone will not be available on Pay&Go

so either loads of phones going back or loads of phones unlocked!!!

Where can I find details of this?

REALLY??? :eek::eek:

the purpose of my asking the question "is there a pay as you go option in any circumstances" was to find out, inter alia, whether there was a prepay option if the credit check is not satisfactory. the answer came back that there will be no prepay option. redgaz was quite rightly pointing out that, if this is indeed correct, this will mean having to return the iphone to the shop if you fail the credit check.

I think there will be options for those who fail the credit check and/or those who do not want an 18 month contract!
Apple will have your £269 do you really think they want to give it back to you!!

i think we'll only find out when someone posts here about what happened when they failed the credit check. they certainly aren't publicising having a prepay option. neither are at&t.

Question for AT&T iPhone customers:

If I were to choose the Pay&Go option for iPhone O2, can I get an O2 Pay monthly sim (any tariff) and will it work in my iPhone (as it is the same network).

This way, my iPhone will be activated and I can choose any tariff. Will features such as Edge, You Tube, Google Maps and Visual Voicemail work with the new sim, or not?

If the answer is not, can I "upgrade my account" for them work, and does that mean paying for one of the normal tariffs, or does it just enable those features?

Hope that makes sense! Sorry if I confused you!

One last thing, can you choose pay&go any other way than failing credit check? I seem to recall there was a way.

I would assume the credit check will be done "instore" in the UK before they let you walk out the door with the iphone.
The activation and service plan selection will then be done at home via itunes.

Makes sense i suppose as O2 would not want hundreds of opened iphone boxes
being brought back in if people fail the credit check.

Sorry if this has already been posted but it is late :p. If you go through to pick an 18month contract with o2 then it gives you the option of bolt ons for data. There is one for 200mb at 7.50 a month or one for 3gb for 30 per month. My bet is the iphone comes with the latter.

In america, I think it was done at home. if you deliberately entered incorrect details, it would fail and other options were available to customers (that were not advertised).

so perhaps similar in the UK? I hope so, I assume any O2 Sim would work, not just the one it comes with.? does anyone know (with AT&T)?

there won't be any credit checks at apple stores or when you buy online.

no, no. as i have set out earlier in this very thread it has a 200MB limit. so, it's identical to the £7.50 plan.
