I've been given a temporary number and have been sent an e-mail saying that it may take up to 5 days to transfer my number over.

o2 are saying my number will be porter from vodafone on 16.11. I'm not impressed. It said 5 days when activating. Boo o2!

the process for an existing customer is very easy and took minutes. It asks u for your number, and then sends a txt to that number with a pin code. It asks for an apple I'd, and then what tarrif u want. Very slick process.

My old number transferred over in a matter of minutes.

Amazed me. Anyone else find it that quick?

Yes existing O2 and yes 30 seconds

OK, fair enough. Like I say, mine is Vodafone.

The new temporary number was active in minutes (it said in a few hours). O2's side of things is probably the slick thing here and Vodafone dragging their heels.

Edit: I should have read it properly: 'business' days. Oops.

from what i have heard from a lot of people vodofone is being a pain in the ass

good and bad

Was third in line at my local store. Got muffins and water whilst waiting. Only arrived at 4pm. Straight in and out. Felt great in my hand. My iTunes didn't recognise the phone at first, but second go it did. Registration went well and I received a call within 4 mins!
Syncing is a little problematic. For some reason Address Book is giving the phone my contacts from about 2 years ago! Don't know why. I add a new contact on the Mac and sync again, and it does not appear on the phone. Only old numbers from years ago. Any ideas?
Also when I sync music, iTunes crashes. 3 times now
:(

start to finish in less than 10 minutes

Exactly what the title says. Got my number porter over as well almost instantly. Simple smooth process.

Let me guess you're on the iPhone and it corrects 'ported' to 'porter'?

It did the same above for me.

I can believe Vodafone being awkward about this. They keep ringing me when I'm in meetings.

I already have an Itunes account and was already with os on an online plan. my Iphone took about 5 min to setup. i am not to sure how quickly the number ported as i was asked for a pin number that o2 sent me added that in to the activation then dident look back. i knly noticed the number had ported when i tried to ring on my old phone. altogether very impressed. Also there was only 4 of us at the local O2 store

It depends when your current contract started. If it was before 18th September then you don't have to pay anything, after the 18th then you will have to pay £269.

Wait. So the £269 is for the phone right? or £269 for the phone and then an extra charge of £269? Because if thats true that is just a huge rip off.

you have to add an £269 if you upgraded/joined o2 after the 18th september. But you still need to pay for the Handset.

Why's that a ripoff? It's actually £219, which is a bargain.

Let's say you got an N95 just after the 18th September for £30 a month. You then bought an iPhone on the 9th November. The N95 was free, and supposedly tied you in for 18 months, but O2 are letting you escape that original contract (which subsidises the N95) by paying just £219! Whereas you've only actually paid 2/3 months on the account already... Under normal circumstances you'd be paying over £400 to escape the rest of that contract!

O2 have done a very good thing by having a set charge in place rather than doing it as a case by case amount.

o2 ported my number the next day, from o2 pay as you go, and in doing so broke my visual voicemail, and internet access, for 25 hours.

All working now, and it rocks.

Over 48 hours since I fisrt tried activation and the servers for existing customers are still reporting as busy. O2 have told me they are aware of the fault but do not know when it will be fixed. Great :(

For now I'll sit and look at my iPaperweight.

Outstanding...

I bought my iPhone from Apple Store Regent Street at 08:30pm on iDay.

Took it back to the office and ran the activation. I am an existing O2 customer, and entered in my existing phone number.

Within 2 mins of Activation Confirmation, my old number went offline (in my old handset). By the time I got home 45 mins later, the iPhone was completely up and running on my old number as I wanted it.

I had told people I would have a temp number of a few days, but there was no need at all...

That is the most incredible service I have ever had from a mobile company. EVER.

Everything since then has been 100 percent wonderful.

I cannot recommend this device enough. It's outstanding.

Hang about... So you are saying that if I (who never have owned a mobile phone) go out and buy an iPhone (for £269), O2 would then charge me £269 to become a customer and activate it - plus whatever monthly charge that is incurred for the next 18 months?

No, only if you have already become a O2 customer since the 19th September onwards. If you are newly joining O2 now and with the iPhone then you do not pay any more than the cost of the handset. That information is only for current o2 customers.

I have a slight dilema with my O2 contract and would appreciate any advice

I've been an O2 customer for over 2 years, my O2 contract finished in August but I kept it going as a rolling contract. I upgraded my O2 contract after September 18th and got a 8600 which was sold on ebay for a tidy profit.
I was signed up on an 18 Month contract, £35 a month with 600 Mins, 500 Txt Messages.

When activating the iPhone, I transferred my current contract onto a new iPhone contract hence paying the £219 transfer charge. Everything went seamlessly and I've been very impressed with O2 and the ofcourse the iPhone.

Now, do I create a headache for my self and cancel the iPhone contract, revert to my old £35 a month contract (with 400 more minutes 300 more text messages) and downgrade the firmware to 1.1.1.
I will get £219 transfer charge refunded but will have to get the data bolt on for £7.50 a month.

Or do I stick with the iPhone contract.

Here the cost for the 18 months on the current contract £849

And if I was to revert to my original contract, the cost would be £765 (but I would have 400 more minutes, 300 more text messages)

Cheers

Existing O2 customer. Activation process took about 5 minutes from start to finish. Very impressed tbh. Went for the middle tariff as my monthly bills just now are £35-£40 so the £45 one made sense given how many more texts and minutes you get over the £35 one.
