The apple online store itself says it's available from O2 and CPW - conspicuous by its absence is any mention of it being sold by apple stores.

The PayG is not coming out on the 11th.. that much is known - walk into *any* O2 store and it clearly says PayG later in the year, and CPW have emailed everyone to tell them it won't be available.

That means unless the apple stores get the ability to sign people up to contracts (which is possible but I've not seen any evidence of it so far.. no real advertising in the apple stores for example) they will not be selling it on the 11th. They'll wait until PayG release.

80% chance that it wont be on PAYG but you dont know that for a fact.

The leak of prices, the lack of info suggests the stategy has not yet been decided!

Just to clear this up once and for all. It's a 2 stage set up process.

To sign up for a iphone3g you HAVE to pass a credit check and sign upto a monthly contract instore just like you would any normal contract phone.

AND

Connect your iphone3g to itunes when you get home to get 'activated'

I hope this clear it up for you a bit, I've had the blank contracts in my store for over a week which says about the 'activating' bit

Thanks
Merlinwiz :)

We are not doubting the activation process for one second.

What I and Tony are questioning is whether this process will be at all available with the purchase of iPhone 3G, on contract, on July 11th, due to the wealth of information and permission, which would be needed by Apple staff, to process a customers O2 contract, in-store.

Are you kidding? It's written in black and white (well, blue and white) in every O2 store in the country!

If the changed their minds now they'd have to rip apart all their in-store advertising and create new ones. Not going to happen.

So i'm assuming you work at an O2 store then,
Any other info you could tell us ?;)

I have heard that Apple are pushing o2 to provide them with a system which will allow contract phones to be sold at Apple retail stores.

I was also told that there was an error with the majority of o2 launch publicity posters which were incorrectly branded with a 8.02am opening time and not the 7.02am time they had originally planned.

Although it will be great if you can just 'sign-up and go' - wouldn't it be much more sensible to check that the thing actually turns on before leaving the store?

Maybe it's just me being pedantic -and I realise that 'duds' are very rare- but it would be a real pain if you got it back home, found out it was broken, only to go back to the store and find it had sold out.

Unlikely perhaps, but its the sort of thing that has happened to people before (eg with sell-out games consoles). I won't be taking any chances!

Do you have sources for either pieces of these information?

It hasn't really been mentioned/talked about, so i'll bring it up again - on initial launch, v1 iPhones - some had problems with black colors with the screen - What likelihood is there that the first batch of iPhones will have more problems than subsequent ones?
