*looks bemused* and says "so what?"

I can't understand why o2 would do this. If someone walks into an o2 shop on July 11th and says they want to buy a 3G iPhone, will the shop assistant ask if they pre-registered or not? If not will they walk out empty handed? It's different to reserving something, so why bother closing pre-registrations? I reckon it was all just a way of getting a rough idea of how many might sell in the first few weeks.

o2 are totally handling this launch BADLY. One week to go and we are all still in the dark. Nice one.

Harvesting email addresses and mobile numbers so they can spam them in 2 months time to get rid of inventory?

i was also contacted by a contact at o2 today to tell me that they have pulled the pre-credit checks

Carphone Warehouse Email

I got an Email from Carphone Warehouse. At the bottom it says:

"Please note, iPhone 3G is initially available on pay monthly contract only"

I guess they want to get as many people on Contract as possible. By releasing the PAYG version after launch date, people won't want to wait and just think sod it, I want it now, I will go on contract!

Does seem odd. The checks aren't an iphone specific thing.. they're just a way of splitting the transaction up so you can get the credit check one day, go home and think about it and walk in and finish the contract a couple of days later. Getting a credit check doesn't reserve you a phone, allow you to jump the queue or anything... why would they bother cancelling them?

I'm not sure they are cancelling them - in fact when I did mine the sales girl knew WHY I wanted to do it but nothing specifically 'iPhone' was recorded - it was just a contract that was suspended after the credit check. Not unusual in it's self - o2 do it week in week out for all sorts of reasons.

They will not just cancel all suspended contracts as they are not iPhone specific

Well, we're making allot of assumptions here by pointing the finger at O2 so much.

We're assuming that O2 have allocated all the stock, we're assuming they've gotten all the information out to stores. We're assuming the stores have had enough time to train their staff. We're assuming that the stores have had enough chance to get staff to come in and work overtime, and we're assuming that stores in shopping centres have had enough time to negotiate early opening.

Those are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head that might need taking into consideration before making a final official announcement - and I don't work in retail.

However, as we pass the threshold into the final week, there comes a point where anxious would-be iPhone owners like ourselves start to get a little shifty in our seats and want answers - the sort of thing that's going to make more and more of us call or visit our local O2 stores for answers if nothing official is announced.

However, there's still a week to go - and a week is a long time (god is it a long time!) in Apple product launches - I wouldn't declare it 'botched' just yet :)

As regards upgrades as I said earlier when I went into o2 to check about how I could upgrade they said to phone o2 customer services and ask them.

They told me on the 11th I could upgrade over the phone OR online but if I wanted the phone immediately I would have to go to a shop to buy one!

I know there is a week to go but seriously - how about o2 clarify it officially.

I am not so crazy that I am going to o2 at 7am! But I would like to know whats happening...

Lets please remmeber that initally the price put people off - £99 for a contract phone is STILL more than most people are willing to pay.

And to get it free a £45 tariff is also more than most people would want to pay so I think claims of selling out are over the top and even come next saturday morning there will STILL be 3G iphones around!

That's my guess too, assuming Apple have been busy manufacturing the new iPhone for the last month or two, and are in a postion to provide reasonable stock levels to all the outlets.

The big question as an existing iPhone contract user is WHEN we will get our phones.

The original method of paying online and getting them delivered for next friday is brilliant - if it happens and it works then it so easy for us.

But the problem is that the closer it gets to the 11th the less it seems like that is going to happen.

We will either have to order on the 11th and NOT get it until the following Tuesday or get it in a shop - which up until now we have been told we can't as upgraders get the upgrade in the shop.

I am 90% certain that us existing iPhone users will end up waiting until the week after next to get our new iPhone and will lose out to the new customers.

Upgraders have ALWAYS got a worse and slower deal than new customers so I don't expect that change.

I hope that I am proved wrong and o2 surprise us sometime soon but I doubt it.

I feel a very frustrating situation coming along of knowing that there are 3G iPhones in our local shops and NOT being able to buy one because we already have one! and that would be very unpleasent for myself and I am sure others like me...

all credit checks done so far are ok but they will not be doing any more I was contacted personally by a internal source at O2

It's fair to say that a lot of businesses offer greater incentives to new customers, and quite often discriminate against existing customers because they already have their business.

Having said that, I have a good feeling about this and believe that O2 will ensure that existing iPhone users will have their upgrades delivered to their doors next Friday.

One week to go!

If it's any help, I have been upgrading online / over the phone with O2 for years. They are pretty damn good at getting phones out - have always been next day delivery.

My guess is that we will be able to order on the 10th, shiny new 3G iPhones in our hands on the Friday.

thanks for the update MojoWill. I assume you have 'contacts' within o2 because I cannot imagine them phoning just anyone. Don't compromise your source

Good luck with that! I don't see it happening myself

I think the pre-registration is more of a way of them being able to contact us so that we can do our pre-checks first (i.e. credit check, etc) and be completely ready. I don't think we can have a guarenteed pre-order because it would be unfair on others if we did not then turn up on Friday to get one of the [probably] limited stock.

I'm going to be checking the websites very carefully, enquiring in person at my local O2 store over the weekend to see if they know anything and then getting the first tube in on Friday and wait around until it opens. Hopefully that will be enough for me to bag one of the first ones.

Did anyone receive a text from O2 this week, Having registered my interest in the 3G phone, got a text saying thank you, details to follow.

Called O2 and they said that the phones would be posted out on launch day, no use to me, I will go to the Carphone Wharehouse to get mine , confirmed here in Portsmouth they will be opening at 7.02am !

Hi wiz2611

I am in Pompey too and have confirmed with the O2 store in Commercial Road that they are opening at 0702. To be honest, I haven't heard of hardly anyone in Portsmouth that is going to get an iPhone 3g - this may well change come early hours of Friday when there is a massive queue in town!

Well for what it's worth, I popped into the two Oxford St. stores Saturday to enquire about get pre-approved.

The first said they'd just had a 'memo' telling them they're no longer allowed to pre-approve credit.

The second said they could by selling me a simplicity tariff, to which I said absolutely not, and he then agreed to approve me anyway. We got as far as me giving him my post code and flat number, at which point he couldn't go any further because my flat isn't in their address system (although the ones on either side of mine are!) He was insistent that they can't manually enter the address.

He then said I'd have to go to Royal Mail and have them add my address into their system. Strangely enough an address search on the Royal Mail website finds my address with no issues whatsoever. So now what?!

What a farce!
