O2 Offers to Unlock iPhones in UK

Well, after lots of fun with O2 trying to get the unlock form to work for me (wouldn't as I had left o2 the previous week), I filled in the form and haven't received any confirmation text or anything. Has anyone else had no response?

*sigh* that's two people who submitted after I did, and one before, and who have received the unlock, (i did it about 10:30pm on the 9th and got the successful message). Have resubmitted. I'm only jailbroken for the unlock and would really like my iPhone to stop being sluggish.

I submitted unlock requests for 3 different iPhones at about 6 pm on the 9th, and I haven't heard anything about any of them.

Nice! Did you get a text confirming your request? I have had nothing. I emailed O2 and they have told me that they have received the form and I will get a message from O2 telling me when my phone has been unlocked. We shall see though?

Anyone with a jailbreak unlock? I presume you restored the iphone firmware? I also presume I will need the IPCC file for Vodafone or just enter the details manually?

Can't I go into the O2 store and tell them to unlock my phone?

I purchased a 3GS back in october in the Apple Store (Pay and Go) and tried to fill out the form on the O2 site, but it seems not to work.

I haven't done another top up since I purchased it and unfortunately I won't stay in the UK for another 11 month.
Is there another possibility to officially unlock the phone by O2?

I'm only jailbroken for the unlock too - but as I understand it I need to have had my PAYG iPhone for 12 months before I can even submit for an unlock? Is that right? Does it matter that I haven't been using the PAYG sim?

Thanks.

In the case of the above 2 posts I would guess (though it is just that, a guess) that you'd need to at least keep the PAYG account active. I don't know the expiry on o2 PAYG credit but surely could just top a few times over the year to keep the account active, then use that credit to pay for the unlock at the end of the 12 months (not ideal I realise)

Jailbreaking doesn't make your phone sluggish. It doesn't actually do anything except unlock potential in the phone. You can of course install programs which slow down the phone but that's your choice.

But it is hassle, holding off on updates while waiting for the latest release, having to keep up with basebands and signature files, wondering if changes are the cause of the odd behaviour you're having or not, having to retore instead of just updating firmware.

As I don't particulary want any of the jailbreaking features, I would prefer to just ignore the whole thing :) It's just not for me since the app store. Before the app store, in firmare 1.x, absolutely I was jailbroken and it was amazing. now it's just themes, and work arounds to things that aren't an issue for me anyway.

Got my txt from O2 "your iphone is now unlocked."

When did you fill out the form?

That's fine, those are all issues you'll have running a jailbroken phone. Something you live with for the extra freedom. But you can't say it makes your phone sluggish.

Why does it bother you that I don't like the performance of my phone while jailbroken? It IS slower and buggier than before. Sorry.

I agree. I jailbroke my 3GS for the first time as I moved network. The phone is 100% slower and 100% more buggy! The phone app itself crashes.
Its a price I am willing to pay until I get that text from O2. It has been 5 days and still nothing. I really hope they send me that magic text telling me my phone is unlocked. I can then restore it to proper firmware. Any issues after that and I go to Apple to sort out.

Ok your first post said it slowed down, then the second post you didn't mention this slow down.

I'm bothered because there is no way jailbreaking can actually slow down your phone. There is nothing extra running on a jailbroken phone. The only difference is that it is open to allow you to install more apps.

Installing the extras you are allowed install through a jailbroken phone CAN slow down your phone but without these it is impossible for the phone to run slower.

Any slowdown you experience must be a placebo effect. Unless you can prove conclusively that jailbreaking itself can slowdown a phone in any way then this is just FUD.

I've had my 3GS stock and JB'd. I never noticed any performance difference, stability was the same too. The only time JB'ing affected stability is when i installed applications which add functionality using unpublished API's. Which will always cause trouble but not caused by jailbreaking itself.

Good for you, your experience is different to mine, can we get back on topic now?

It'd be interesting if people who have had their unlock could post when they got the unlock, and when they submitted the form?

Well, I got tired of waiting and did a restore on my phone and got a lovely message saying congrats my phone is unlocked.
8 hours later I got a text from o2 saying my phone is unlocked!!
Anyway. Now I no longer use a jailbroken phone on my vodafone contract and push is working again!!! Better than ever. Maybe down to vodafones better network or maybe apple have just improved their push.

Glad to be rid of o2.

Submitted on the 12th and was unlocked on the 20th.

I got mine unlocked - woo - so can any americans recommend a PAYG sim that i can get for my christmas trip to america?

Well, After official unlock rather than jailbreak, I can confirm that battery life is so much better. Phone hasn't crashed like it did with JB and it just runs smoother!

My other phone I tried to get o2 to unlock I got a text saying they cannot unlock it. I don't understand why.

Well it was the full 14 days (my request went in on 9th November), but my unlock text arrived this evening. Just need to ring to get my PAC now. My wife's and daughter's unlocks were put in at the same time and haven't arrived still. I won't get a chance to chase O2 until the end of the week, so hopefully they'll have arrived by then.
