i live there too - UK kicks arse! :D

fixed that for you!

Found out that you don't get Visual Voicemail with PAYG, and that checking your voicemail is 15p! I don't get many voicemails anyway (probably less than one a month) so not that bothered.

Think I'm ready to dive in and buy it as a wee Christmas present to myself!

yes, the paying for voicemail is annoying (i think i pay 10p but i retained my old o2 pay and go tariff) especially since i'm hardly ever interested in the message left (usually some annoying estate agent, in my case!)

Pay & Go on the iPhone 3G is great!

The data is enough for browsing, e-mail and using things like the eBay app, its great :)

What are the limits on the O2 PAYG data usage? I know it "says" unlimited, but it also says "Fair use applies".

Do you get any warning if you're about to exceed the fair use limit, or do they just start deducting your credit.

200MB a month limit, no they wont start taking your credit just warn you and if you keep going over they might stop the internet until the next month (but thats rare).

Sorry to go slightly off topic (but related), do you know if that is the same for contract users

I checked my usage last night and was on 200MB after 3 weeks, and I count myself as a light user

Hope I am not going to suddenly get a big bill from o2

They wont react to violations of the fair usage policy unless its major (like if you used 1GB of data in a few days).

Even if you do use 1GB in a few days, they still wouldnt charge you anything extra.

I used my iPhone for internet all the time last month and it was fine.

I wouldnt worry :)

Nice one, Cheers

Was getting worried for a second there

Pay As You Go here. :D

I find paying something like £100, then another £30 or so a month, for 18 months WAY too expensive. I've always been on PAYG.

Exactly.

Plus its a lot more flexible on Pay & Go, so if I dont need to have credit for a month I just dont top-up, simple. But if your on a contract you have no choice but to be charged even when you dont use the phone.

The data usage concerns me. I'll basically only be using the phone for internet (work pays for my blackberry) and feel like 200 a month might not be enough, especially if I'm doing voip or streaming music to it.

I sthere also a minimum you must top up for the free internet? How much will the unlimited internet be afterwards?

Read my posts above. I use my phone for only internet too and its fine.

You dont have to top-up for the first year but after that is £10 a month, but I'm gonna buy me a new iPhone when that happens (by that time a new one will be out).

You'd want a WiFi connection for that really - streaming music and doing VoIP all the time will eat way into your 200MB fair use limit. A McDonalds, Starbucks etc provide free WiFi.

Thanks. I'm still not sure about it, but that makes me feel a bit better. If I went with the lowest pay monthly plan it'd take a bit to make my money back, but would start to make it back prety quickly after the 8th month.

Thats what I'm trying to avoid though. With a non payasyougo iphone it would be fine. Wifi isn't open here as much as it is in the US, and I'm rarely in a mcdonalds or a starbucks (been in both places once in the last two years.) If I get hit with the fair use I'll lose all reason to have it.

EDIT: This is how useless of a human being I am. After thinking about it for a couple hours I think I'll probably do pay as you go, just wait another month or two to get the phone rather then get it immediately after macworld. Did the maths and realized £460 (for P&G) versus £800 (PM) for the total minimum charge makes a bunch of sense.

Say I bought a 3g on payg, in the first year I get free data. But what about the text things that o2 offers. I've heard if you put a tenner on you get 300 texts to use within that month. But what happens if you don't top up the next month. I realise the remaining texts, if any, get wiped away. Will o2 keep bombarding me to top up every month. The way 02 writes this seems topbe confusing.

Could anybody tell me if what o2 is offering is any different to, say, "everytime you top up 10 you get 300 free texts to use within 1 month"? I just don't like the idea of being forced to top up each month, i'm a light user and some months I may not want to get the 300 texts.

Also, after the year is over, how does getting the bolt on for data work?

Thanks

You can change your tariff to the texting one so you get 300 free texts when you top up £10 you get 300 free texts. After a month from the date you topped up your remaining texts will be wiped and you will need to top up to get another 300 free texts, if you don't top up then you will get more texts whenever you do top up... That's why it's so flexible

When you get the 300 texts you also have the £10 credit to use for whatever.

After a year, you need to keep topping up £10 a month to keep the Internet working (WiFi will work though). At this point you can buy the new iPhone (it will be out in a year) and get another year of free net with that.

When the free net runs out and you need to top up £10 a month to keep it running, £10 will come out of the balance you top up by, so if you top up £10 after a year all of it will go to the net bolt on.

Thanks for the help, that clears a lot up. After a year, if you top up 10 pounds, do you get 300 texts given to you still as well as the 10 getting wiped off for the months wifi?

Also, I do not plan to get the iPhone 3g just yet, I have a touch that should see me through but I think i'll get the next iPhone. Sadly no rumours yet. Hopefully it should be out in the summer.

Once again thanks for your help.

I'm not sure about that one, actually. I think you would because it's still a top up, it's just that the credit is being used for the bolt on. That seems logical but I'm not certain.

Ok, well the new iPhone will take some time to come out yet, at least 6 months I think.

No - it is £10 a month (if you choose to - you need to tell O2 you want to continue with data roaming) purely for that. Then on top of that, if you want any texts/minutes, top up how ever much you want.

Ok, and if in the 2nd year, you miss a top up one month, does it matter? Or will o2 just give you a months data from whenever you top up?
i.e if you miss a top up, will o2 cancel the bolt on or anything like that?

I might be getting the iPhone 3G on PAYG. I could possibly buy one in January, or wait a bit and buy some Shure SE530PTH headphones. I already have an iPod touch though

That doesn't sound too bad. Just wondered if you had experience of this. You said you use your phone for internet only and O2's website says

Text Anytime:
Top-up £10-£14 and get 300 texts per month (no mention of free texts so presumably calls are extra?)
Top-up £15-29 and get 500 free texts per month
Top-up £30+ and get unlimited texts per month
"Your free allowance can be used for text messages only."

One other thing, if anyone knows

Favourite Place: is that really making a call from one place, eg. home? What's the point in having a mobile? Surely I've got that wrong. As near as I can tell, the calls on this tariff are to UK landlines and O2 mobiles, so what happens if I call a non-O2 mobile?

O2s tariffs are about as simple to learn as a game of cricket! What a mess!

are you sure about that?

prior to getting my 3G iphone on pay and go, i was using normal o2 pay and go with the £7.50 bolt on. i would top up £10 every month, from which the £7.50 would be deducted and i would get a free allowance (in my case minutes rather than texts). i see no reason why it wouldn't be the same with the 3G iphone on pay and go.
