From 10 November, the iPhone can be unlocked for O2 customers in the UK.

The unlock is free for Pay Monthly customers and can be requested at any time. Pay & Go customers have to wait 12 months from purchase and have to pay £15.

Might be handy for any o2 UK customers who want an official way to use a SIM card from another network?

    Cheers,
    Dan

I have just gone through the steps, what was the box at the end all about? It had to be completed to proceed. o2 are becoming more and more slap dash.

I have my fingers crossed that I get the unlock as my iPhone 3Gs was sent direct from Apple, I have always used a Simplicity tariff in my iphone and i have been on that pay monthly tariff for nearly 2 yeard.

Fingers crossed! I won't go on Orange but I like having the option!

Does this mean the markup that unlocked iPhones usually garner is about to be reduced, seeing as legitimately unlocked iPhone are about to be popular...with the US being the only exception to still have locked phones?

That's a bonus not having to wait until your contract is up. :D

Interesting that it doesn't seem to be re-locking to any other network.

One of my family's iphones is on a simplicity contract - will that count as pay monthly or pay as you go?

I have to wait until July next year (when I'll probably buy the new model anyway!). I paid £538 for my iPhone yet I can't unlock now whereas those who got their iPhone free on pay monthly, can unlock straight away.

    £45+ per month for 18 months isn't free. ;)

Exactly, they haven't paid their subsidy off yet they may unlock. I paid full whack immediately.

Kind of points to Vodafone coming either tomorrow, or very soon!
Seeing as the procedure gave a fortnight for the text, and 28 days for the email etc, I'm getting my unlock in - you can unlock your phone whenever - I'd advice*anyone* with an iPhone to do it, as you can at the very least get Orange Wednesday codes from swapping the SIM card, and also get some same network goodies from a free SIM from another carrier.

Also, if you're interested in non-O2 tethering, this brings the market open to use 3, Vodafone etc presumably?

Apple disabled tethering on officially unlocked iPhones that are not using an official iPhone carrier in that country :(

    Quick question.
After filling out the form and submitting it, do you people get some sort of confirmation page saying that it's been submitted. While filling it out for my wife's iPhone, it just takes me back to the start of the same form.

So even though vodafone are perfectly happy for me to tether, apple have blocked it?

Well, two ways I can think of.

    1. Easiest, get one of your friends in Edinburgh to fill in the form for you

    2. Use a net "ip address hider" service, if you google that you'll see what to do

Vodafone. As of either tomorrow, or within 7 weeks. Then Orange. (Legitimately). Once they're unlocked, more people will use hacks to get tethering i'd imagine.
