o2 UK customers - official iPhone network unlock!

Just had mine unlocked

Just a question, do i only need to "activate" the unlock ONLY once by plugging into iTunes? After that, i can swap sims as and when i want without having to plpug into iTunes? 😕
 
I'm confused about this simplicity info.

My 3G contract is up in a month or so and I want to switch to a simplicity deal (iPhone is already unlocked)...

However, will I be able to buy a PAYG iPhone next June (pending the next version being released) and then stick the simplicity sim in the handset?

As long as this will work I won't be too bothered about unlocking the new handset for 12 months (if the 12 month period is still applicable for simplicity sims in a PAYG phone??).

Simplicity is from O2, so yes. You'd still be on the O2 network with a locked PAYG O2 iPhone, just using a Simplicity SIM. But you wouldn't likely get the visual voicemail or Cloud that the PAYG SIM would give.
 
I want to ask something.. I lived in Indonesia, and my friend is coming back to Indonesia from UK for christmas. I want to ask is there anyway to buy a unlock phone in the UK? If i buy the 02 one, can i get it unlock when she buy it for me??

No. If you buy the PAYG iPhone you need to wait 12 months before O2 will unlock it.

Well, not really. Many people have stuck an O2 contract SIM (e.g. Simplicity) in a PAYG iPhone that's less than 12 months old and O2 have unlocked it.

Are you going to have an O2 contract SIM if you live in Indonesia?

I think not, but i think the 02 contract doesn't have to be use right? I can just pay the contract but didn't use it, and have them unlocked it.. Is it right or i must use it?? They don't accept buyout in UK?

You need to live in the UK and pass a credit check if you want to take out an O2 contract.

Read the OP's post again. His friend is in the UK. They could take out a 30 day Simplicity, buy iPhone PAYG, then request unlock, cancel Simplicity. Sure, O2 may not complete this in time before his friend jets out to Indonesia, but it's doable.

His friend will still need to have a UK address and bank account to take out the contract with O2.

Yes of course. The OP said that his friend is going to Indonesia for Christmas, implying they are normally resident in the UK.

It's still a bit of a risk to splash out £350+ and not have a guarantee that it will work?
 
Just thought I'd add my experience.

I'm still under commitment on my iPhone 3G. I have since 'upgraded' as O2 suggested, by buying a PAYG iPhone 3GS from O2 and putting my iPhone contract SIM into it.

My iPhone 3GS was successfully unlocked. I'm happily on Vodafone paying £20/mo for 600 mins, unlimited texts, unlimited data and, most importantly, coverage and a network that works 🙂

My iPhone contract SIM is now back in the iPhone 3G, for which I have now also requested an unlock. Hopefully that will be granted, too. Then I can cancel the contract in January and put the whole O2 'experience' behind me.

Don't get me wrong, they're far from the 'worst' network in the UK, and I appreciate coverage and network performance is incredibly location sensitive. For me, though, being on Vodafone is like having a whole new iPhone.

that sounds promising to me. I too took out a contract to get a 3G (around feb 09) i had this unlocked using the o2 unlock. Ive since bought a 3GS on PAYG and put my contract sim in. Ive go through the o2 unlock thing again but put the IMEI of the 3GS in and im waiting on a response. Hopefully they will unlock this for me aswel. Not that im planning on moving away from o2 but for when the 4th gen comes out next summer this 3GS will be worth more officially unlocked.

i'm in the same boat but thought you;d only be able to unlock one of the phones.. eg: 3G OR 3GS -


so you put the same phone number in for 3G and 3GS but 2 diff IMEI num's.. and they gladly unlocked? that's cool 🙂

Yes that's right. I'm still waiting on my second unlock, but I'm optimistic as others on Talk3G have been successful.

Simplicity is like a plan right? So basically i can do like you said right, but if it's needed to be active for 30 days, i think i can't make it..
 
Like others I am quite impressed with the unlock process. I filled in the online form and 2 days later I recieved a text to connect my iPhone 3G to iTunes. I am still 2 months within my contact.

I dont think I will be leaving O2 (unless vodafone add value to their plans) but it will be nice to have the flexibility to use 3rd party sims when I am travelling abroad.

I don't think it needs to be active for 30 days in order to get the unlock, but the cancellation notice period is 30 days. ie, you sign up on day 1, you request the unlock, you cancel on day 2, you pay the plan until day 32

i filled out the form for 3gs unlock yesterday... still waiting though 🙂
soon as that's unlocked, i'll fill the form again for the 3g - which is currently running jailbroken/unlocked on a virgin sim anyway.. but would like to get legit unlocked and run legit firmware on it.
 
woohoo my unlock worked, thats 2 unlocked iphones for me. The 3GS was bought PAYG but never used with that sim card, only used with my o2 contract.
