". . . Rival mobile phone firms are trying hard to break in, as Apple's similar deal with AT&T in the US ended last week."

Haven't heard anything else about that. Is that right? We might get a hint from what's happening there.

I'm sure the AT&T deal was penned at 5 years. Someone please do correct me if I'm wrong, some of the "facts" in this article are a bit skew therefore I don't necessarily believe that the iPhone is going to another carrier.

Either way, the "2 year break clause" could only come into effect from november, which is when O2 started to carry the iPhone. Apple are not going to wait around until November to release the next iteration of the iPhone if there is one coming in Summer.

Neither contract length is known.

We simply don't know. O2 and CW got burned last time with too much stock - I imagine they're learning from their lesson and cutting down their inventory in anticipation of the next model, which if released June 8 is about 60 days away.

Take it with all the salt you like, but I was told by someone senior at O2 on iPhone launch day that their exclusivity agreement was five years.

Of course, it is possible there are get outs after two years etc.

I can get an upgrade to 3g just now for free.

Do you think the 3g will still be available after the release of the new model incase I decide the new one is too expeensive or could I be stuck with my old 2g.

This is my dilema.

No one will know for sure till the new one launches. But it is normal apple procedure to go EOL with a previous product once they start shipping a new version, if not before. So i would expect to see some mighty good deal on iPhone 3G's in the months running up to the launch, and for them to be out of stock everywhere by the time the new one is launched. Just going on what happened last time and apples usual tactics that is.

If i where you, i would fight the urge and hold out for the new version, there is every chance that there will be a new version at the same price point, probably with more storage.

The price point I am on is zero at the moment as they will upgrade me for free.

I am worried that the new phone may price me out and they will no longer sell the 3g which I could get now for free.

What a pickle this is. I paid full price for the iphone when it first came out and have no appetite to pay over £99 for a handset ever again.

I would imagine there will be a gap between the annoucement and the release, and no doubt O2 will be desperate to shift any remaining stock they have during this period...
