What's news?
ATT has been unlocking devices for their customers after contracts ended. On top of that they even unlock up to 5 devices even though these're still under a contract if the account is in good standing.

Well, that's a joke. Have you tried doing this through them? The runaround is insane. I N S A N E. And then, once they unlock one, they say you've reached your limit. LOL. Then you dial up another 25 CSR's until they see you have 4 remaining, and start all over from the beginning. It's great...

Can someone please explain to me what "Paid-for" phones mean?

I know this was answered already, but I figured I should elaborate since it's on-topic.

(I'm mostly assuming you live in America for the below post unless otherwise noted)

When you "buy" a brand new iPhone 5s from your telco for...say... $199, what really happens is the telco buys it for you and sticks you on a (often 2-years) contract. Until that contract is over, you don't own the phone, the telco does (i.e., it's not paid for). You can also pay the $799 (or whatever it would cost in America) and buy it outright.

This practice may not be common where you live, so if you need me to clarify anything feel free to ask.

This is the only good thing he has done in his Presidency.

This was both an original and totally unpredictable post. Thank you.

Only thing I support Obama on so far, remember guys, HE didn't kill Bin Laden, Seal Team 6 did.

Absolutely asinine comment. Do you really think it wouldn't have happened without any effort on his part?

Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean that nothing they do has any meaning.

This is a rather interesting thread since I generally keep away from the politics sub forum, it does explain a lot of the comments/views in the non political sub forums...

talk about drifting from reality ... smh

check this out:

Uh, have we gone so far that if you list out facts then you are now "drifting from reality?" Facts are reality, no drift here. Now of course his opinions listed on that site are obviously bias.

The list of facts on that site (as of early 2013) looks pretty darn accurate and paint a picture of failure in every respect.

Just because you like someone, don't tune out the facts. Obama said, yes to the mission and then watched it unfold between golf games. Seriously, what president would have said "no, don't execute the mission to kill Bin Laden?"

oh... sorry, that would have been President Clinton.

Right and take out a whole town to get him. Oh yeah. That would have gone over well and inspired more extremists. That said, at least Clinton didn't invade Iraq which resulted in thousands of American lives lost and tens of thousands of Iraqi lives lost. You can thank your boy Dubya for that. Never did find those WMD (catchy term invented by BushCo) that mushroom cloud Condi, Rumsfeld, Mr. Draft Deferrment Cheney, etc. professed that knew were there and where they were located. Of course then Cheney also said that the war would only last a few months and Rumsfeld said would only cost $400 million tops. In the words of Rick Perry... "Oops!"

Just for the record the President gave the go ahead to kill Osama. No he didn't find him, no he didn't pull the trigger but he did make the decision to make it happen. This is well documented and his own intelligence people said it was only a 50/50 chance Osama was even their. It was under Presidential authority that the operation went down.

Had Osama not been their I am sure those on the right would have flogged the **** out of him for the wasted operation. Damned if he did, damned if he didn't. Go figure.

Developers tend to lean libertarian. Just an observation.

Wrong. Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) in reference to chemical, biological, nuclear, and radiological weaponry has been in the defense vernacular for many decades.

"between golf games" as if he has played an unbelievably huge amount of golf. I swear, this meme needs to die.

Edit: Also, let's not forget that Bush could have gotten Bin Laden as well ... but said he wasn't all that important.

Yea, the worst recovery since the 1930's.

One good thing president Obama acomplished was that he has proven beyond ANY doubt that left wing tax and spend economics do not work. Most of us who fund this country knew that long ago by watching the USSR collapse.

Wrong! Look at Germany.

All phones should be unlocked the day you get it, whether under contract or not. One should not be tied to the other. So what if the phone is unlocked? If you are under contract, you still have to abide by the terms, or pay an ETF. What is the need to lock the phones to begin with? Locking makes absolutely no sense. It would be like buying a new car with installment payments and the car won't start for anyone else until you get the title.

Oh god. I hope you aren't serious.

Especially when you consider the New Deal programs contributed greatly towards us becoming a world superpower. It took a few years, but historically, it's considered a resounding success.

Plus there was that, you know...big war thing. That helped, too.

Also you really couldn't compare the USSR to the US at the time. Thats just a load of bull.

Very true. While the situations are superficially similar, you can't really make a direct comparison. To cut to the chase, the USSR economy was hanging by a tread at that point. We're currently in the midst of a fairly minor economic inconvenience. While things aren't exactly peachy at the moment, they're far from dire.

Can't understand why this was ever illegal... Land of the free my arse

Better for the phone companies if it is, I suppose.

This comment by you screams how uninformed you are. The republicans have passed over 350 bills that sit on Harry Reids desk. The democrats do NOTHING with them. The democrats are the do nothing administration.

YOU ARE SERIOUSLY CLUELESS!!!!

They do nothing with them because they're basically all evil bills :)

Gee thanks, mr. president. How'd you manage to get this done in between your golf games, fundraising, and vacationing? What a special president we have.

May as well piss off the carriers too with this action since they are already subject to any and all lawless governmental surveillance and directive. The hardware manufacturers unlocked their phones to government years ago.

It's about time we the consumers get to eat some cake.
