If it being refurb/dev is the case, then I can certainly raise hell for them not giving me a brand new machine, and hopefully demand my money back while keeping the comp :D

what do you mean by dev?

I ordered an ADC mac pro.
Does that mean they developer models are used or what?

the OP said his friends received developer machines, I'm not sure if that's the case with mine, or if someone returned it (I bought it from an Apple Store in NYC on Fri)

No smell issues here, I'm just wondering if it's meant to be so LOUD. I've moved from a MacBook so I guess I'm just not used to constantly moving audible components. Lord this thing howls when you put a disc in, too...

Guys, Guys! This is a 8 month old thread that was resurrected.
Let it be!

garymilgrom: Welcome to MR. If you have a new question that is not directly related (other than you both are talking about MacPros), then I recommend that you start a new thread, rather than appending to an old thread.

Your speed issues are almost certainly due to using older versions of the software. When you use G5 program code on an Intel Mac, it has to run the code within the Rosetta emulation of the G5 environment. That slows everything down. Add to that, if you don't have at least 2 Gb RAM, Rosetta (and the G5 programs) will run like a pig.

Time to update your software.

The smell is Weaponized RDF, It has a low vaporization temperature. Take a deep breath.

Well, whoever dug this up, thank you!!!!!!!!

I'm sending images for proof right now along with other files I found, and I have a partial to free refund pending!!!!!! (I wouldn't settle for just replacing the comp)

I just hope that if this comp was indeed returned in such a small time frame, that it wasn't because it was faulty...

Wake from sleep

I went down to the Apple Store today (Denver Cherry Creek) and played with the two new 2.8 Mac Pros. I put them both too sleep. The first one wouldn't wake up and required a hard reboot. The second one restarted upon wake from sleep. I had read about these problems on Apple.com. Apparently the fix is to reset the PRAM, but still... I was a bit surprised! An Apple guy came over and I confessed that I had put them to sleep. He did the hard reboot on the first one. He said, "well, I guess we shouldn't put them to sleep." Is it me or are the Apple sales people getting less and less informed?

smell? who returns the computer because of the smell? does it lack the new computer smell or does it smell like someone's feet? that's the strangest reason for returning a computer if ever i heard one.

concerning your post, i think every product has its share of problems. as long as the quality issues don't approach that of the xbox 360, i'm happy.

Actually I have noticed unacceptably strong off-gassing smells that are 10x to 100x stronger than usual across a range of different products coming from China over the past few years that involve plastics/rubber. The most recent example is with some wireless headphones I purchased from Costco. The first set were some Sennheiser RS-120s that smelled like a plastic factory. I returned these because of the smell and because they didn't fit. I ordered a pair of Sennheiser RS-140s from Costco and they had no smell at all.
