Hi, have you sorted out this problem?
I have run into exactly the same issue.

At first, I could boot my macpro and get to RAID utility to create a RAID5 volume on OCZ vertex SSDs (4 of them).
I could even start installing MacOSX on the volume, but it failed in the middle.
After rebooting and trying re-installing, I started getting a gray hang-up screen all the time. Sometimes I can get to RAID utility, sometimes I get stuck before that. I think the RAID card is somehow flaky...

I gave up waiting for a response from Apple. Ended up RAIDing without the RAID card as the machine needed to go into production use. In the process of returning the card..

I still get good speeds though, 3 120gb RAID 0 750/650 read/writes.

Oh I see. So I might do the same then.
Hope we can migrate this software RAID seamlessly on the hardware RAID someday with the firmware update on the RAID card or something.
I also would like to know the performance diff between these two.
Anyway, please update if you hear anything from Apple or OCZ...

You are getting better performance without the RAID card. I saw the specs and the processor on the new 2009 RAID card only has a max I/O capability of about 500MB/s if I recall correctly... good for maybe 2 SSD's in RAID0, otherwise it's a bottleneck.

Also, many people running HW RAID cards with SSD's on other forums are reporting that the cards add unnecessary latency. What might have been unnoticeable with legacy drives is rearing it's ugly head with SSD's. That's if SSD's even work at all!!! (You are not alone!)

SSD's are causing some RAID card manufacturers headaches... Hard to charge $500 for a card that bottle-necks and hinders your storage performance!!!

And the fact that some crap out because of the stress the SSDs put on them. :p

Areca tested SSD's (5*INTEL SSDSA2SH032G1GN) on the ARC-1231ML (.pdf on the results).

Although I hear Areca is one of the cards responsible for adding latency to the process.
I haven't spotted anything on this. But I don't spend a lot of time researching SSD's just yet.

Do you have any links by chance?

It would be helpful, and appreciated. :)

I can't seem to get the Mac Pro (booting off a 640gb WD running 10.5.7) to boot with 1/+ any of the Vertex installed. They are running version 1.1 however just hang at the first grey screen forever. Anyone else running into any issues? Thanks.

Exactly the same problem for me. Just wasted several hours thiking it was me or a busted SSD
