Could you post your speeds, please? I'm curious as to what you are getting. I'm in So Cal as well, but a bit further north in O.C.

Sure, I tested it at my work in Carlsbad. I am consistently getting around 200kpbs down with 5 bars. It drops a little with less bars, but not to shabby for EDGE.

I've been using unlocked iPhones on T-Mobile since the first unlock was available for the 2G and I've been very happy with the service, and savings :)

I wonder just how much money you actually saved in doing this and is it worth the slow speeds of Edge.

Maybe $15-$30 per month in savings?
So that comes out to $180 - $360 per year?

I got one yesterday paid full price but i did not get the message....could it be because I started setting up without itunes but icloud instead?
I tested 2 sim cards other than my ATT (one T Mobile and one European) and all work.

Hmm, nice. I might be able to live with that. It just depends on what kind of speeds people are getting on H2O. Some are reporting over 1Mbps, but some are saying only .5 Mbps or less (not much higher than your EDGE). I really don't want to leave T-Mobile, but if H2O can get reliably faster speeds, I just might.

That's a substantial amount in savings IMO.

Okay, I'll bite. Please walk me through what I should do.
1. buy unlocked iphone.
2. buy SIM card from your desired carrier and install it in your iPhone
3. Sign up to a month-to-month plan or buy text/data/voicecall value packs.

Seriously, I can take the upfront hit. Where do I go from there?

I'd love to live somewhere where that might save me some money. Instead, in the US, step 1 costs much more, and steps 2 & 3 cost the same (or sometimes more).

Currently I'm on a grandfathered Family Talk plan with 3 lines. Two have unlimited EDGE data. (T-Zones - $5.99/month). Altogether the total bill is $80/month.

While the savings is good, I value being able to choose my carrier and not be locked into 2-year commitments. That's why I buy unlocked phones.

Step 1 doesn't cost you more in the US. Just compare the iPhone prices to europe, Germany for example is $875 for the 16GB...

Any Apple Store in SoCal sell "off-contract"?

It's a hit or miss situation, depending on which Apple salesperson you deal with. I was turned away from the Brea Mall store the first time I tried. The second time, I went to South Plaza and was able to purchase a 4S off-contract. My carrier is T-Mobile but I told the employee that I had AT&T and didn't wanted to renew my contract. Worked like charm. If all else fails, BRING someone with you with a valid ATT phone number.

Wow! that's a great deal.
I would stay with T-Mobil too if I had that option.
I have 4 lines on an older AT&T family plan, 1 iPhone on unlimited data, 1 iPhone on 200MB, 1500 mins with roll over, unlimited family text - about $180 per month
Hate paying so damn much.

Thanks for the tip. I tried getting one yesterday, and got shot down. I kept asking the employee if I could buy it full price as a device only. He was ready to ring me up, yet stopped at the last second by asking his manager if it's okay. As soon as I saw his manager, it was over. His manager was a dick, literally. He flat out said NO, and I needed an active AT&T account.

I was also denied yesterday even though I bought one last week. I wonder if the memo went out and the lockdown is on until November

The guy who assisted me did not know how so I told him to select "Device Only" at the main screen and then he is ok with the rest of the process. He said "I learns new thing today"

So I don't think there is a memo out generally, just depending on who you got at point of sales.

No link, but if you go to the Apple store in San Francisco's union square, ask for Jeff. Then he will tell you what he just told me.

Well if Jeff from the union square apple store said it's true... it must be true........

I'm sure Jeff is consulted about technical issues from apple HQ in between his obligations ringing people up for ipods.....

Unlocked 16GB 4S, every time I end a call, my service drops and picks up by itself.

Same problem with two different T-Mobile micro-SIMs.

Anyone has noticed this?

Why do you need 1500min each month included? I have 100min and seldom use them...

I have 4 lines on our family plan for $49.99 per month with 1500 mins.
We usually use about 1100 - 1300 mins per month.
Also currently the cheapest family plan right now is $59.99 for 550 mins so it makes sense to keep my existing plan as it is cheaper and has more minutes.

I would not bet on any of these currently unlocked carrier phones staying that way... There is no reason for AT&T to let you change carriers when they have no legal reason to do so. I'm betting these phone all lock down very soon.

It worked but...

A friend bought an iPhone 4s and he simply popped in his own micro-sim and was able to activate the phone PC-Free. Was using T-Mobile right out of the gate.

Decided I'd give it a try and purchased an iPhone 4 the next day and at a different location... Watched as the sales person selected 'Device Only' however after signing the Apple T&C on his POS device, a second screen popped-up with an additional AT&T T&C (this didn't happen with the first purchase). At the time they seemed pretty innocuous; however after I walked out of the store I began wondering about that second set of Terms & Conditions from AT&T. Compared receipts from both purchases and they are identical:
iPhone 4s Black 64GB AT&T
Part Number: MD269LL/A
AT&T Account Information: No wireless service activation during iPhone sale.

Anyone else get the second set of AT&T T&C? Any concerns?

IOS updates cannot remove IMEI #s from the iTunes unlck database....once the IMEI is in.....its in.

I had to sign it too and so did some ohers herein.....people said dont worry about it...they make you sign that...but he true fact is it ha nothing to do with att terms...it all ha to do with IMEI #s...at the full retail price, your IMEI gets "dumped" for lack of a better word, into the iTunes Unlock Database...all appening at the moment of point of sale...nothing in thworld, short of steve jobs himself coming back, can remove the IMEI therefrom

ATT doesnt have much of a choice. I am not connected to ATT, thereforthey cannot push updates to my phone. Apple has to be the one to lock my phone, through itunes. Unless ATT sneaks into my bedroom while i sleep to repogram my iphone, i am not worried about ATT.

Also i've already posted the terms of ATT one agrees to when buying an iphone. NONE of those terms indicate you cannot use your phone on another network. It simply says you will not alter your phone to do so.

Also, Apple has a 30 day return policy on the phone. If apple locks the phones, they themselves sold unlocked, then they will be inundated with returns.

I don think you understand that which you speak of.

Why not READ the second set of T&C and see if they concern you???????????????????????????????????????

Or at least read the posts before you. I already answered your question.
