Ever since the latest patch

Ever since the latest patch, every time I open Word, the format toolbar disappears. Its reappearance causes the window to expand beyond the screen, and it loads odd.

My solution to all my Microsoft Office woes: I downloaded OpenOffice 3. It's MUCH quicker and has all the features I need. Plus you don't have a separate icon for the word processor, spreadsheet, database, or the presentation program. Just one icon for all four!

Sure.

I'm using OS X Leopard on a Penryn Macbook Pro.

Every time I start Microsoft Office, both the format toolbar and the standard toolbar are gone.

That is despite the fact that the formatting toolbar is still selected in Toolbar preferences.

This problem is specific to Word and only Word. Excel and Powerpoint both do not show this behavior.

So I have to uncheck the format toolbar, and then recheck it to activate it. But then, it comes back glitched. And the window size changes. It will only come back after clicking inside the document.

EDIT: Solution was partially solved by doing some complex toolbar changes. I had to undock the Format toolbar.
