My spelling and grammar settings get reset to the default setting everytime I start Word. My styles are not saved either. The com.microsoft.office.plist and com.microsift.Word.plist files are created everytime I start word. I have deleted them and even reinstalled Word. How can I get these settings to stay?

I have a MacBook Pro, Leopard 10.5.2 and Mac Word 2008

Thanks

This happens on both the administrator and limited user accounts.

Only the grammar setting is being reset.

I go to the Spelling and Grammar preference page and click on settings in the Grammar section. Then I change the spaces between sentences to 1 and change comma before last item to 1. Click OK.

When I restart Word these settings are set back to "don't check"

Going crazy.

Hi All,

I'm desperately trying to find out about fonts in Word. I work with a variety of non-english fonts and am having a terrible time with them on Word 08. First of all, they install fine with Font Book, and when I type their names in the Font list under Word 08 they appear. However, when I try to scroll for them using the scroll bar in the tool box, they simply aren't there. I've been scouring the net to find out where this list is and if it can be manipulated to include my two missing fonts. Any ideas out there?

Thanks in advance,

Qilak

I also work with international fonts. Word simply wont recognize even the international fonts that come with Leopard. When typing with these fonts, I use an alternative text editor. NeoOffice is really nice and free. There are tons of other alternatives.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with Word and spaces/expose?

I just found out a serious bug/annoyance in Excel 2008 charts: the option to set custom error bars seems to be gone!!! If I open an excel 2004 document with custom error bars, Excel 2008 displays them OK but there''s no way to change them, since the UI element to do so is gone.

This is a picture of the error bar dialog, and the red box is where the custom error bar selector is meant to be and was in Excel 2004.

that almost screwed me over in school today... good thing i know microshaft and didn't delete office '04.

Word scrolling

Type in a few pages and use the Mighty Mouse to scroll up and down whilst in draft mode (I'm not interested in page formatting). Text is all over the place; missing chunks of text, overwritten chunks of text, repeated chunks of text. The only workaround is to page up and page down to get the screen to refresh.

Word 2008 is unusable.

Now switched back to Word 2004.

Maybe it's time to try Pages?

I use MS word in class to take notes. I used to be able to get through two classes without having to worry about power.

Now after little more than an hour I can hear my fans, and my 2.4 MBP is almost completely drained.

The update is out! At first glance it looks like they have addressed the typing lag issue.

I take that back, the lag is still there. Sorry, may have jumped the gun on that last post. The update must have been for something different.

Do you mean the "Microsoft User Data" folder? Just move it to the Preferences folder in your user library.

I moved this folder to the preferences folder and have lost my way! Entourage seems to have lost received files. Where do I return the Microsoft User Data folder back to? Every time I try to open an attachment, it tells me that the file is either corrupted or in use.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks in advance!

I have two issues:

On my macbook, the standard toolbar in word has disappeared. It is checked in the View>Toolbars menu, and repeated attempts to turn it on and off again do nothing. In fact, checking any of the toolbars does nothing. My screen displays from the top: title bar, the document elements, quick tables..etc bar, ruler, then text- no matter what I do. You never knew how much you depended on that save button till its gone...

On my imac, the entourage reports that its database is corrupted, and the database utility, after going through a 10-15 minute procedure, hangs without fixing the database. So, essentially, until a fix is found, my entourage is nothing more than a purple spaceholder on my dock. I posted a separate thread on this (although no one responded), so no need to reply here, but just adding to the list.

Here's hoping that the next patch will be a good one!

dodgy in expose

I noticed that Word does not play well with expose. When I show all windows and highlight the document, it doesnt display any information and the blue highlight box is not on the right place.

Check out my attached picture.

Does anyone know of a fix or are other people experiencing these problems?

Yeah I am having the same issues. Also, Some times the toolbox will be in expose and other times it won't. weird

i often see missing text (that randomly re-appears) when I use tables, or at the top or bottom of pages.

Word 2008 is, so far, a pile of steaming poo.

I finally got my copy today and have a problem (big surprise). I tried to register the software and it did not accept the PID number (even though I tripled checked it to make sure I had entered it correctly). I saw that I had only two free times to contact MS about this software, and so I was wondering if anyone else had this problem before I used up half my credit on one of their errors.

same problem. i just gave up.

cursor in word disappears

Two more Word problems:

1) the cursor randomly vanishes (the insertion cursor). Once this happens, it happens in all open documents, and I need to quit and re-start Word.

2) double-/triple-clicking to select word/sentence stops working at random. When this happens I need to quit and re-start Word.

Add in the randomly vanishing/re-appearing text in tables and at page borders, the inability to add simple Word 2003-compatible line drawings, general drawing problems (like when resizing embedded pictures), random crashes when using the "find" function, windows randomly moving from space-to-space in spaces, and I was actually far more comfortable and productive running Word XP in VMWare (especially with the recent update to vmware that allows the command key to be used instead of ctrl.)

I've also not used that new ribbon-like thing even once, so I wish there was a way to completely disable it. Paste-without-formatting seems to be missing? (I wrote an applescript to sort of emulate it, but it's a little funky).

I really hope they fix all this garbage because in my new career I use Word all day long, and I am always in "compatibility mode" (which seems to be the source of at least some of the bugs).

I have a simple question here for Pages 08 / Word users : i'm switching from Windows Word, and it appears that you don't have the full page function on Mac; also, for european users, Pages does not have " " in their french version.

Maybe i'm wrong, does Word for Mac accept the full page mode ?

Do you mean the "whole page" zoom level? If so, yes it has it. Or do you mean the full screen mode?

I have a question on Office 2008 Word -

When you hit the return, it doubles spaces down instead of just going to the next line. Anyway to turn that *feature* off?

Thanks!

Entourage blocks attachments!

So what is this a Windows PC?

Someone sent me an email containing the URL of a site to be reviewed. Entourage "has blocked the following potentially unsafe attachment...", and then overwrites it with "Remove Them Learn More".

Clicking on Learn more is a real classic...
"Cause: For security reasons, Entourage blocks attachments that could potentially harm your computer.
Solution: If you do not trust that the attachment is safe, delete it from your computer.
Solution: If you trust the message sender and want to receive the attachment, ask the sender to compress the file and then send it to you again."

"Get someone to compress the attachment" - WTF!

Fortunately I could view the source. Somehow there's an Apple Plist which is some XML containing the URL for me to click on -- perfectly reasonable as it's come from someone who uses Apple Mail.

I know of this in Windows - and it's a right PITA there, but arguably necessary given how it is so prone to viruses and the like. But, for goodness sake, not on a Mac. And not when it's not even an attachment.

For some reason I never noticed that Office for Mac doesn't have Access? Do I have to buy it separately or any recommendations? I had Office '04 Student Edition and I just upgraded to '08.

There's never been Access on Office for Macs.

I also got caught out (not checking first!) as they call it Office 2004 professional; Office 2003 Professional includes Access.

Filemaker's the Mac database.

Or run Windows in a virtual machine and run Access from there (which is what I have to do).

Note, too, that filemaker is also available for windows, so it represents a fairly decent cross-platform solution so long as you don't require access compatibility.
