Been using Office 2011 Mac for a while now, it really is great. Quite speedy and very nice to look at.

I'm not a heavy user, just a University student which means opening powerpoints & light Word editing. Not much Excel use.

grrr! Everyone should be able to access this program now :(

He's simply probably just not used to the idea of "options" or "disabled" being used to Apple products and all. I mean Steve Jobs never heard of the word OPTIONS. He likes to just force his favorite settings on everyone. So I think you have to forgive this guy for just assuming Microsoft is the same way (Windows even has theming! Can you imagine theming on OSX? Never in a million fraking years so long as Steve is in control).

What the hell does Apple have to do with any of this? This is Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office. What on earth are you rambling about? Your personal opinions of Steve Jobs (a man I have no doubt you've never actually met) and indignant outrage over some perceived slight by Apple against you personally, have nothing to do with any of this.

And if you're not happy with either Apple or Microsoft (or both), go somewhere else. Exercise your rights as a consumer and patronize another company. Instead of patronizing us.

The problem with this comparison is that M$ gives us stupid options that mean nothing, Apple gives us few options.

In terms of usability, they actually come out about equal for number of options.

Theming? That's all you got? Theming?

FWIW, Macs are my option from Microsoft.

Seeing as you appear to be incapable of adding a simple 2+2 together and connecting a few dots, I guess I'll have to spell it out in baby steps for you.

People who use Apple products (here a "Mac"; have you heard of this product???) don't often get many user preference (especially relating to the GUI) options to do anything. Apple likes to decide things for you since Steve thinks he knows best for everyone. Here we had someone that doesn't seem to get that Microsoft Office for Mac gives you the OPTION of using their newer ribbon interface (he was whining about not wanting the ribbon interface) or using the old menu based one. So in other words, I was being sarcastic about Apple products compared to Microsoft ones (i.e. he's not USED to having options so he didn't even consider that Microsoft would allow him to keep using the old interface, unlike Apple products which almost never let you use the old interface or themes; they force the new ones on you). Here Microsoft did something right on the Mac for once by offering the Mac user the CHOICE of which to use (more than they even offered in Windows, I think). Obviously, that all went WAY over your head and so you felt the need to whine about how I implied something negative about your hero Steve Jobs or one of his products. In other words, it's an immature rant.

What on earth are you rambling about? Your personal opinions of Steve Jobs (a man I have no doubt you've never actually met) and indignant outrage over some perceived slight by Apple against you personally, have nothing to do with any of this.

Like I said, apparently you cannot add 2+2 above to see what I was actually talking about nor is a person allowed to have an opinion about Apple that isn't glowing all the time, in your eyes, it seems. Like I care about your opinions when you clearly let Apple think for you.

And if you're not happy with either Apple or Microsoft (or both), go somewhere else. Exercise your rights as a consumer and patronize another company. Instead of patronizing us.

Wow. I'm not a fan of Steve not offering preference options for the OSX GUI and so I have to abandon the entire platform on this one issue. Wow. Just Wow.

I guess in the fanboy universe a person isn't ALLOWED to have an opinion on an issue without being forced to switch entire platforms. LOL. :D

The problem with this comparison is that M$ gives us stupid options that mean nothing, Apple gives us few options.

I'm simply talking about having the OPTION to use a previous GUI interface instead of being forced to use the new one. I may or may not like the ribbon in Office, but at least I have a choice in the Mac version of Office of whether I use it or not. If you use multiple monitors on a Mac, the ribbon could be VERY handy seeing as Apple chose not to offer an option to put the menu bar on BOTH monitors and so you have to move your mouse across to an entirely different screen just to select a menu option (this doesn't occur in Windows even clear back to pre-XP days because the menu is on the window itself and not the screen; Apple COULD fix this by offering an option for a menu on each screen and even a dock on each screen, but here we are at Snow Leopard a decade later and you STILL cannot effectively use multiple monitors in OSX easily. So at least the Microsoft ribbon offers the ability to select menu options with a mouse on a 2nd monitor, for example.

I mentioned this issue in another thread once and a Mac fanatic told me how he uses keyboard shortcuts for everything and so it was not an issue. That doesn't fix the blatant problem, though. It just works around it. And nothing has keyboard shortcuts for EVERYTHING. And the larger the monitor, the more annoying it is to have to move the mouse a long distance to get to the menu at the top of the screen, regardless.

But how DARE I criticize Apple on ANYTHING around here or the fanboys want to hang me. I'm actually saying I appreciate Microsoft's interface on the Mac because it gets around that glaring problem. Apple KNOWS this can be a problem. It's why their PROFESSIONAL software embeds the menus in the windows in addition to the screen menu (e.g. all Logic's menus can be accessed on a window sub-menu on the main monitor and other monitors, thus getting around the annoying issue for that program). So Apple knows they have a stupid system (just like the one button mouse) but they don't want to admit it (heaven forbid Steve admit something on the Mac doesn't work as well as in Windows) so they only work around it on their pro products.

Theming? That's all you got? Theming?

FWIW, Macs are my option from Microsoft.

WTF is your problem? I'm talking about legitimate user interface issues and a lack of option to use prior methods that a user may prefer from previous releases and you're whining like only a fanboy can about a single example as if it's the only thing there is to complain about in OSX. Windows and OSX both have their down sides (Linux too). Some people simply choose not to see them around here.

WoW! What a change in posts!

Hi - I logged on this AM to see what was being said about the new MS Office 2011 for my iMac. I've got MS 2004 and would like to update to 2011. The first posts, in Sept. of 2010 or so, were quite informative, interesting comments, usable information. Then I skipped over to the last page of this thread, hoping to see any newer info or comments and, lo and behold, people are ranting and raving, going off on this topic, on the choice of words used, stuff that really doesn't seem to belong on this site. Hmm. Not a great way to start the new year, friends. Anyway, I'll probably go for the 2011 edition since I'm not enjoying trying to find work-arounds for iWorks and the type of work I do. Hope everyone has a happy New Year and chills just a bit...

dude I agree with you. Everyone needs to calm down! This is a place where we're supposed to calmly talk about apple and technology, and help other people with problems on their apple products. Not get all up in each others business.
