I sync directly with the MS server (on multiple devices) and it works well. (and I don't have to worry about it overwriting existing contacts etc) Am I missing something?

I think the issue is this: Currently you can only sync iOS devices with Exchange if your account has ActiveSync enabled on the Exchange server. This is not a core feature in Exchange and requires additional licensing fees. I know we have to pay extra per account if we want to enable ActiveSync with our hosted Exchange service. Enabling Exchange calendar syncing via OS X SyncServices would be allow users to sync their calendars with their mobile devices even if their Exchange account does not allow ActiveSync.

If you're syncing now with ActiveSync it's not a useful feature, but I guess there are people out there who aren't able to use ActiveSync and they're stuck right now.

Wake me up when it supports CalDAV, PGP, Exchange 2003, and Office Communicator. Excel 2011 is nice. Word and Powerpoint '11 are necessary evils. Outlook is still unusable.

This doesn't affect MobileMe syncing between Macs and iOS devices correct?

Correct. Apple is switching MobileMe to CalDav I believe, so all your Apple devices should still sync. Outlook doesn't support CalDav so once the switch happens you won't be able to sync Outlook with MobileMe.

Not sure why you would want to sync via MobileMe....

If you had a MobileMe account and wanted to sync it with Outlook (rather than Mail & iCal) for some reason. Outlook doesn't support CalDav so once MobileMe switches over to CalDav (in May I think) Outlook won't be able to sync with it.

I love Office 2011 for Mac (Word especially). The only problem with it for me (so far) is on Outlook I can't open New Email Messages. I use Chrome for my Gmail, so I don't care. If this update fixes this issue, I'll give Outlook a shot. It's okay on my work PC.

forgive my ignorance but is this a re-release? what's the difference between this and what they released back in OCT?

That's never going to come. Microsoft has moved away from WebDAV. It's not included in Exchange 2007/2010 if I'm correct. And the only reason Windows versions of Outlook still work is that they are using MAPI currently, which I believe Microsoft is also doing away with.
Exchange 2007 still supports WebDAV but 2010 does not - although installing 2007 SP3 breaks WebDAV even though MS say it should work. In any case Entourage 2008 and Outlook 2011 are both EWS compatible so there should be no WebDAV grief. Exchange 2003 will never support EWS.

Great, just what I wanted from Outlook. Overall, this has been Microsoft's best Office for Mac suite, really no complaints.

At least almost no complains - still get fairly often the beach ball when using outlook, every other week a crash and at times extrem slow, at other times its just fine. (It's the only application on my app that is behaving that way, so don't think it's anything with my system) - but overall fairly happy and some hope that SP1 fixes some of the stuff.

Hope the update also fixes that you manually have to close the update application in order to do the update (I like to start updates before I leave the house and have a happy system when I come back, not a system that waits for one mouse click and than still needs forever to be updated)

SP (Service Pack) is Microsoft language for "collection of bug fixes" - not a new version, only fix of broken things

No 2 office!

when can i/we get rid of microsoft office on/off our macs?

i cannot understand that apple is unable to tweak iWork to replace the microsoft ****

I love Office for Mac 2011.

The only issue I have is that my MobileMe calendar which syncs seamlessly on my iPhone, iPad, Outlook 2010 on PC, & iCal on Macs does not sync with Outlook 2011 on Mac. Outlook 2011 on Mac insists on having its own calendar. Quite why I don't know, as Outlook 2010 on PC is perfectly happy with the MobileMe calendar.

Tempted to run my own Exchange server though...

faster?

my machine is a few years old, but still the load time for Word or Excel to open is excruciating.

Some parts of Microsoft's products are proprietary so cannot be used by anyone else. Also people working for companies that have a majority of Microsoft based systems in use (i.e. nearly all of them) find it easier to interact with everyone else if they are using the same software. I for one am happy with Office 2011 - it enables me to work for most of my clients without having to use my Windows 7 bootcamp.

noted, but not happy!

Why can't micro**** just support standards for once and stop trying to reinvent the wheel?

No they aren't.. if they would care to look in the options. Outlook sync services are currently perfectly able to sync calenders and contacts between iCal and Address Book directly. This is what I use, because I do not want to sync everything against exchange (my phone is private), but I do want my contacts to line up and I do want my iCal (private) to show my work appointments (but not the other way around) so I don't double book my time.

The only difference between what you can do now, and what you can do with SP1 is that you don't have to sync your iPhone against iCal and AB anymore, but you can sync directly against Outlook. This is mostly useful for people that use Outlook exclusively, because if you use Mail/iCal/AB as well as Outlook, there is absolutely no need for it.

EDIT: Only works for Address Book. Talking out of my a.. again. ;) I let iCal peek into Exchange for my work appointments. Blegh

Yawn.

Wake me up when it supports Exchange 2003 just like all of their Windows versions.

Que the one MS fanboy who will say it's old tech and Microsoft will never support it.

Guess the team that works on Office 2010 for the PC never got that memo since that works like a dream with Exchange 2003.

Or, you could be like the Office for Mac team and happily keep your head in the sand.

If this means I can finally use the same online calendar (either Google's or Windows Live, I don't care which) with Outlook 2011 and 2010, I'll be happy. Otherwise, I don't care.
