Not quite, but he's still a notorious first-pitch fastball hitter. Kent is the same way, so the 3-4 hole batters aren't taking enough pitches. These guys are veterans so they should know what brings them success, but still a batting coach should be there to make adjustments. Apparently Murray's problem was a lack of proactive work. He'd talk mostly to the players who came to him. I understand he was dinged for the same approach in Cleveland. As if we didn't know, a great ballplayer is not necessarily a great coach.

Can't understand why guys aren't more patient at the plate.I'm surprised it's not taught/coached more. Mueller was well liked here by his teammates and coaches..Seems like he'd be a player's type coach. He was one that was patient at the plate, least when he was here...

I think hitters who can produce hitting the first pitch fastball probably should swing at a lot of them, but not all the time obviously, or they're never going to see a first pitch strike.

The Dodgers are being cagy about who will get the job permanently. Mueller is being called "a bridge." I wonder how he feels about that.

True, but it seems as tho a lot of the younger guys and rookies seem to be free swinging. I know they're eager to be productive, but being patient is important too.

Maybe Mueller's "bridge" is actually his trial period? If he gets results via the hitters being more patient and he's liked, maybe he'd be permanent?

Stability would be nice, so I hope he works out -- but bridges usually get walked on or driven over. ;)

As far as young free-swingers are concerned I think we see more of it now as a part of the increasing Dominican impact on the game. There's an old saying in the DR that you can't walk off the island. Of course that doesn't explain Kent or Garciaparra. They're neither Dominican nor young. But they're not classic free-swingers anyway. They're just looking for pitchers trying to get ahead in the count.

we lose 3-2 :(

we're getting close to being a mediocre team...
We're playing below mediocre right now. There were a few brightspots from last nights game. 1. Hudson woke up, 7 1/3 innings of two hit ball (including that reaalllyy weird infield hit) 2. Chipper- back in the lineup and causing damage. 3. McCann hit that first home run in, what like a month? 4. Soriano had another great inning.
Methinks we need to swap Soriano and Bobby for a while. Soriano's just plain lights out, while wickman hasn't been right since the beginning of the year.
Last nights debacle was partly due to Yunel's innability to get the out at home when he should have, so it's not 100% wickman (though he did allow the runner to reach)
Hated them for years..I just don't drone on and on and on about it in every other post I make :p :D
Fair enough.

well the braves are winning in the 9th with 2 outs....but Wickman is pitching again.....can we hold it? they have 1 man on second

EDIT: and wickman just walked a man

Hey, don't get mad at my team because you're team couldn't claim first when the Mets were on a 5 game losing streak.

No instead we managed to fall BACK to third in the standings. At least the Phils are getting killed tonight, so we'll go back up to second. But something (maybe the current score) says Boston is gonna win tonight. Which means you guys drop back a game, so you should be mad at your team. :p

I can't really be that mad at my team. We did close the gap to 7.5 games (back to 8.5 a lil later)

yay Red Sox beat the Giants 10-2. Yankees lose! Sox lead back up to 8.5 games :)

Remember how we were all bitching about Pedroia batting only .190 back in April? He went 5-5 tonight, with 1 HR, 1 2B, 2 runs scored, and 5 RBIs. He's batting .331 for the season now. Rookie of the year anyone?

No freaking run support. Clemens wasn't that bad, and Jeter did his part, beyond that, nobody else really accumulated any hits. Wheres the power from Abreu/A-Rod/Matsui when you need it?
Also, why wasn't Damon in today? I have a feeling that he would have made a much better DH than Phelps.

It's official, the Cardinals bullpen is a f**king joke. They send in a 3rd baseman as a relief pitcher and he's our only pitcher who didn't give up a run tonight.

Sad, same-ol', same-ol'. It's too painful to watch a full game this season. I pulled the plug after it went 5-3, knowing it was another prelude to implosion.

haha papi got ejected in the 1st inning

And hopefully it put a match under the team's ass.Good to see some runs. Not so good to see two guys responsible for them. We'll see who comes alive today..Tavarez has been a pleasant surprise this year..BIG road trip ahead next week.....

i'm sure you'll win two of the first three...considering the way the braves are playing as of late.

but we finally get a win on this road trip. but we still have a big homestand starting monday...boston, detroit and washington.

and you yankees better win NOW.

Are the Dodgers seriously interested in Jermain Dye?Or is Rosenthal just filling up his blog??

They're just really desperate for power. It's going to be interesting if they find any worthwhile trades. You just know they'll have to overpay.

I think that Nomar and Pierre are really the only regulars that are significantly underperforming right now. Kent is on the long downhill slide and really not doing much worse than expected. Ethier also has regressed, but that's not uncommon for a sophomore year. I think Luis Gonzalez has come on lately and is in some ways a little better than he was last year in Arizona. Martin, of course, is hitting even better than last year. I think Kent takes more pitches than Nomar does, not that that's saying much.

You could make the argument that Pierre and Nomar are better than their current numbers and they're bound to improve, in which case the end of their slumps will be about like trading for better hitters. On the other hand, Nomar could always get hurt again. And honestly, I'm not sure Pierre really is that much better than today's stats. Pierre swings so weakly it reminds me of a toddler trying to use a wooden bat.
