Yeah, I don't think Willy Mo straight for Jermaine Dye would be a fair trade. Even if Wily can hit the cover off the ball once in a while.

I think that Dye still has some life left in him, he just needs to change teams, like Igawa.
Dye did pretty well last season, he's either having an off season, or he's due for one big hot streak

Dye's not useless but really last year was a career year. And don't forget, while US Cellular Field is fairly run-neutral overall, it is definitely a great home run park.

If we get him,he's a rental for two months. He's been hot since the All Star break.

So the Yankees drop Proctor,
The Dodgers and Yankees have agreed in principle on a trade that would send reliever Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Dodgers, who have a 5.61 bullpen ERA since the All-Star break, have been in on a number of trade discussions involving relievers but zeroed in on Proctor over the last 24 hours.

The Yankees view Betemit as another first-base/DH/bench option for this year, and a potential third-base replacement for Alex Rodriguez next year.

Betemit hit .231 with 10 homers and 26 RBIs with Los Angeles, which acquired him from the Atlanta Braves in a deadline deal last season. He played mostly third base with the Dodgers but is unlikely to see much time there with Alex Rodriguez in the midst of an MVP-type season for New York.

Yankees manager Joe Torre has complained about the significant dropoff offensively from his starters to reserves, and Betemit could be the answer. The 25-year-old switch-hitter also can play shortstop and second base and is batting .320 (8-for-25) as a pinch hitter this season. He had pinch-hit homers in consecutive games at Atlanta in May.
I wish we could dump Farnsworth.:(

The pitching-starved St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday acquired right-hander Joel Pineiro, optioned to the minors last week by the Boston Red Sox, and cash for a minor league player to be named.

Pineiro, 28, was a 16-game winner in 2003. He was used exclusively in relief this year by the Red Sox before being sent to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 25.

Pineiro played seven seasons with the Seattle Mariners before signing a free agent deal with the Red Sox in January. He was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox, but had a 3.60 ERA in 16 road appearances covering 15 innings.

This is just insane. Why would we drop Proctor, he's our only somewhat reliable setup man. And what's this about poor reserve offensive production- Phillips has been playing first as a backup, and he's batting .300 (although i haven't heard anything about Mientkiewicz for a while)
I think we can dump farnsworth, but Cashman is too stupid to do so. Unlike most of our other relievers, he's not getting any better. Bruney is getting his confidence, Vizcaino has done a lot better, and Proctor was doing decently.
Also, Betemit doesn't seem to be doing that well, we should've traded farnsworth for him

I could see the Dye deal going through though. I just hope they don't trade Delcarmen and trade Masterson instead. But if we get rid of Pena, that would be awesome.

what the ****. MLB.com is saying there are reports the Sox have traded Gabbard for Gagne. We don't need another ****ing closer. I like Gabbard as a replacement for Schilling because he won't be here after the end of this season.

The Rangers are close to completing a trade that would send closer Eric Gagne to the Boston Red Sox, according to Major League sources.
Gagne has the right to veto a trade to Boston and sources say that's what appears to be holding up the deal. The Rangers are said to be getting left-hander Kason Gabbard, 25, who is 4-0 with a 3.73 ERA in seven starts for the Red Sox this year, and two other players.

Maybe as a Red Sox fan, you don't quite appreciate how dominant Gagne can be.

Yes he has an injury history, but this year his numbers are as good as any:

33.1 IP, 2 wins, 16 saves, 29K, 2.16 ERA, 1.05 ERA.

If you've never been in Dodger stadium back when Gagne was there and THE best closer in baseball...you don't know how he can suck the life out of the opposite team.

Welcome to the Jungle would come on, GAME OVER flashes everywhere, and that was that.

You're not just getting a closer, you're getting a guy who will, along with Papelbon and Okajima turn 9 inning games into 6 inning games.

I'm happy with the Gagne deal. I don't have the faith in Timlin down the stretch. Once Donnely gets back,I like it even more.

Sox still have lots of the prospects in the farm system..I can take parting with Gabbard..

Hanson's name is also being mentioned in the potential Dye deal along with Pena..

When is he going to pitch, Is paperboy hurt?

Yes I know, but we still need a 5th man to pitch the first 6 innings of a game. Although Gabbard is still fairly unproven, I think he has potential. Schilling is going to be back soon, but I don't think he'll be here after next year. I guess we'll see what happens.

Also, anyone see anything about what the Sox got in return for Piniero?

nah papelbon likes closing, he said as much back in April.

The problem all along with papelbon closing is the argument that if you have a great talent, why only use him for 3 outs every couple of days when you could use him for 6+ innings every 5.

Gagne can't reject a deal to Boston even if he's unhappy with his role there, but I would bet that getting a shot at a ring will placate him for the rest of the year.

hmm apparently Gagne would have to waive his no trade to go to Boston; I thought Boston was on the list of his limited no trade.

I think he has wanted to be a starter since the beginning, I could be mistaken, though.

No.

During Spring Training after the Sox were trying Piniero and a few other guys as closer, Paps went to Francona and asked to be the closer again.

He's going to stay the closer for a long time. We don't need him in the rotation. Even if Gabbard goes, we still have Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Wakefield, and Schilling plus other prospects down on the farm.
