Ok so they bring out a special ball for A-Rod to hit as he nears 500 home runs, The ball has a hologram to signify its authenticity. But how do they know if the ball might have been hit foul and then a fan try to claim it a home run.

At least with Bonds, the balls are also numbered. I assume the ump knows which one is in play at any given time, and so MLB can verify the correct ball.

So Bud Selig swallowed his morals and is going to be in San Francisco to watch Barry Roids ruin another record.
The Commish said:
Out of respect for the tradition of this game, the magnitude of the record, and the fact that all citizens in this country are innocent until proven guilty, I will attend Barry Bonds' next games to observe his potential tying and breaking of the home run record, subject to my commitments to the Hall of Fame this weekend. I will make an additional statement when the record is tied," Selig said.
Even if he is in attendance in the future, Selig will not participate in any on-field celebration when Bonds, who has faced unrelenting steroid allegations for years, breaks the record, USA Today reported Monday.

Mod Note: quite a few off-topic posts discussing steroid use have been merged with an existing (older) thread here. Thanks.

I'd like to add the when Bonds does break the record can we keep it civil in here? If you wanna bash him and talk about his alleged steroid use take it the link thread that devilot mentioned.

Back to baseball....

6 games back now in the East. 6 games against Boston left. Can we get a Boston Massacre, Part Tres?

Considering that this is the Official Thread for the 2007 season and last I checked, Barry Bonds is still playing, and last I heard he's approaching perhaps the greatest record in the history of sports and it's still 2007, could we have some rules on what constitutes an "appropriate" comment that won't get moved?

You know, just so we all have a level playing field.

Now now, don't get ahead of yourself just yet now :p

The Yankees have 17 games in August against the top 4 teams in the AL - 3 against the Sox, 3 against Cleveland, 3 against Anaheim and 8 (and thats a pretty big 8) against Detroit. We'll see what happens after that.

We also have 28 games left to play against Baltimore and Tampa Bay.

It's clear that you missed what was going on. The subject started to turn into steroids discussion, and it so happens that Barry Bonds name is linked to said discussions. It's simple, if you want to talk about steroids in baseball take it to the above mentioned linked thread.

When the time comes when he hits 756 you can: a) Congratulate him b) Say nothing c) Make a post in the steroid thread (I say there because most likely somebody would say the steroid taker has broken the record thus inciting everybody in here)

Now, have I been perfect with my few posts about Barry? No, but if I want to talk about him and his alleged steroid use I know where to take it now.

Nah, I'm not that stupid. :p

For some reason we've been having some luck with the Angels, they usually straight out own us. If the Yanks keep playing like they do, they should be able to handle those teams (and no, I don't mean destroy them)

BTW, love the sig.

Not at all. I was trying point out that Bonds was a hall of famer before any mention of anything else. You know with numbers, the language of baseball to paraphrase Bill James.

But hey if you want the thread to consist of "wooo my team is 4.5 games back" "nuh uh we're gonna win!"

Then by all means have at it and enjoy the wonderful thrust and parry that such communication entails.

Listen if you want to talk about Bonds (without it being tied to his alleged steroid use) then that's fine and dandy.

I'll be quite honest, I skimmed a lot of those moved posts. They were probably intertwined with the other posts. The rule in here is simple, no steroid talk and no personal attacks.

Down 7 runs and they are knocking for more. We have overcome bigger deficits from worse teams, but only Cabrera and Molina have really done their part. I'm really hoping that Jeter comes out his slump soon...
Edit: wow, shut out by the royals...pitiful

I don't know what Igawa's problem is. He looked like he had sorted himself down in Scranton. Supposedly he was using his changeup (which was his out pitch) more and with better results.

The results don't look too good right now though.

Ideally Mussina, Pettitte, and Clemens would anchor it down, but Mussina is nearly 40, Clemens is going to be 45 in a couple of weeks, and Pettitte is 35.

I'm sorry but that is just not going to get the job done week in and week out.

If Pettitte, Hughes and Wang can start putting together some decent quality starts like they are capable of and Mussina and Clemens are just respectable, they might be able to make a run at it considering the offense.

That offense is still too inconsistent though.

So this suspended game rule is so odd. Watching the end of a game from June that they are finishing now.

If A-Rod hits a home run in the suspended game it would count as number 493 not 500, The run he hit Wednesday would be counted as number 500.
