I just received this same email and was about to post it here too!!!

When i read the 13,000 orders/second comment I knew it was total BS!!

S H A M B L E S

Building the hype for sure.. only a few dozen (ie, 24) iPhones for sale per O2 stores at launch? Give me a break!!

the line about existing iphone customers only being able to upgrade online has also been removed from the o2 site

o2 stores have already received an email yesterday stating that existing iPhone owners are able to upgrade in store on Friday.

Hi sneeks,

Have you got or seen a copy of this email. I went into my local 02 store yesterday after trying to order online for 6 hours. They were adamant that an iphone to iphone upgrade was only possible online.

Would love to go back and wave a bit of paper proving them wrong under their surly little noses. :)

I really do hope we can upgrade in store on Friday but this is still on the website

To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we're offering you an early upgrade to the iPhone 3G. You won't have to wait until the end of your existing contract either, all you'll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.

This special early upgrade offer is only available online until 11th October 2008.

From here.

Am crossing everything that I'll be able to queue on Friday morning!

Upgrades for existing iPhone customers are now able to be done in store on Friday morning. I'm 100% on this!

I kinda of had the same.

The store would not hear that it had been changed, so I asked them to check their emails (the guy was standing in front of the computer so did) and it was there. He did stress that the email stated O2 would prefer existing holders to use the website however.

I went to the O2 store in Cheltenham half an hour ago and they confirmed this. They had no idea on available stock as they haven't had any arrive yet.

My local o2 store received the email before 4pm yesterday.

Sorry if i am confusing the issue.

My mate is pretty adament. This is the up-to-date info.

Call customer service, speak to an agent ask about the iphone and they will read you a statement regarding updates and how we will be notified by tomorrow afternoon. Upgrade iphone - iphone 3g only online!

Do the stores know what you are asking them? Big difference between upgrading in store, and iphone upgrading. At present it is impossible as no software to allow this has been rolled out!

Just got back from a lunchtime visit to my local 02 store. They recognised me from yesterday when they told me i couldn't have an iphone to iphone upgrade in store.

They apologised and said they had since had the email authorising them to carry out iphone to iphone upgrades. Software isn't really an issue as it is simply a sim card swap and a quick plug-in to itunes to activate the new phone.

I said I'll see them at 8.02 on Friday!

Just chatted with o2 iPhone customer services who confirmed that instore upgrades for existing customers are available on Friday. It looks like your friend has incorrect information.

The statement I had read to me said that in light of the problems online yesterday and the fact that some customers prefer to deal with phone issues/upgrades in store that o2 have opted to allow all existing iPhone owners the ability to upgrade in store from Friday 11th July. Once again I was advised to turn up early on Friday.

If the email is genuine:

O2 said that they had wanted to keep 1 phone on reserve/in stock for every person who said that they were interested in iPhone.

But - and this hasn't seemingly hit front page yet, as mentioned - this email says that O2 stock will be *scarce*

Unfortunately, they have only been able to supply a
small proportion of the number of phones we asked for

We are confident that over
time we will start to get sufficient volume to meet demand, but it is
likely that stock will be in very short supply for some weeks to come.

we had over 200,000 people expressing interest and only a very small proportion of that number of devices available.

Demand was at 13,000 orders [pings] per second. Frankly, we have to admit we just weren't prepared for this unprecedented level of demand. No website is.

Most shops will open at 8.02am but some
stores, particularly in shopping centres where early access is not
possible, will open as usual from 9am.

The approach on Friday will also be on a first come first served basis. The amount of devices will vary depending on the store but will be on average a few dozen iPhones in each O2 or CPW store.

We will be receiving deliveries from Apple roughly once a week for the foreseeable future but it will be several weeks before
stocks increase.

So, you're competing against a few dozen (24-48) other people per store, to get one... But the stock is split between 8GB and 16GB!
So there will be less than "a few dozen" per store of the 16Gb model...

So if you're thinking a big store, you might want to get up pretty early, and just check out the queue level.

The major O2 stores at the larger shopping centres will be an interesting experience! So I guess the exclusivity of having an iPhone 3G will be mostly kept for the die hards for a week or two ;)

Nah. First, "a few dozen" doesn't usually mean 24, it's more likely to be 40-60 phones per store. Second, while we may all be frothing at the mouth on here wanting to get our hands on the 3g goodness, do you really think the general population is? There have been no TV ads so far for the 3G (that I've seen) and apart from the stuff in-store I haven't seen any posters etc. anywhere either.

I still think O2 are trying to whip up demand/headlines, although I'm perfectly prepared to be proved wrong and be weeping quietly when I can't get one for about a month after trying on Saturday. :)
The Apple website is becoming a very popular web destination these days. It clearly mentions the July 11th date.

All I would say is, don't underestimate the potential demand.

I concur. Granted, the announcement appeared in a lot of mainstream press so certainly, a lot of Joe Publics know about it...but they probably read about it and forgot it pretty soon after.

Then you have to consider how many of these are actually in the market for a new phone/contract/upgrade... and I haven't seen a single bit of advertising for the Friday release so it's not like there's a huge awareness out there. I think it's all bit of a storm in a teacup, carefully orchestrated by O2 (13,000 order requests a second sounds delusional beyond belief).

Everyone (ie. us rabid fanatics in the know) will get their iPhone on Friday, everyone will be happy... maybe mid next week when the advertising/reviews/media attention takes off, we'll start to see shortages. Everyone needs to chillax :D

We all rushed out to queue for the iPhone last year and in the end didn't really need to. Demand was nowhere near what we'd all expected and I doubt it'll be different this time. Like a true nutter I'll still go to the shop early but I'm not convinced that I really need to.

Perhaps not incorrect when he advised me, now just old. It would be appear if o2 are working behind the scenes to correct errors of yesterday. Hopefully full information will be released on Thursday!

Hopefully i can get an instore upgrade as where i am based there is a o2 store and carphonewarehouse within 20yrds of each other and in a relativly remote town. Should be an easy process if in store for me.

Brian

The new information was emailed to the stores yesterday and I'd imagine o2 will update the online information this Thursday, as indicated, to spread the word.

I am still trying to get my head around how any company can spend 'several million pounds' on servers, load balancing hardware and web developer fees. I don't imagine Amazon's web servers and associated hardware would have cost them 'several million pounds'! What a load of horsecrap.

Setting up web servers is more complex than a layman thinks, you have to have backup servers, firewalls, several layers of servers, etc. etc. Its not trivial.

No, I wasn't suggesting it was trivial. I'm a web developer myself though, and I haven't heard of any week-long ecommerce campaign that has hardware costs of 'several million pounds'! A huge streaming video project being piped around the world like the Olympics - sure. But a handful of servers behind routers/firewalls/load-balancers, hosting web pages and connecting into a database and SMS gateway - no way! Sorry, but O2 are talking out of their backsides.

They might have spent millions on upgrading their network to near-total HSDPA coverage on the lead up to this launch, but I refuse to believe they would, or rather could, spend millions on a server farm to serve up a few pages of content.

No, much more believable that they were pointing traffic for https://upgrades.o2.co.uk to a 133MHz Pentium II, sitting in a little cupboard somewhere, whose sole purpose was to give the impression that they were inundated with hits. In fact that was probably one of the conditions of the Apple contract. ;)

Receieved the following after I contacted them yesterday from the O2 site, it basically confirms what we all now believe/hope to be the case with regards to ability for existing iPhone customers to upgrade instore:

The difference is this time it's a worldwide release. Apple had plently of manufacturing time for the UK last time after they had got America out of the way. Of course the UK will have less priority, we always do with everything!

The local stores can't even confirm they'll have any 16gb on launch day yet (they said it was unlikely)... best I can do is get down there as early as I possibly can (6am and take sandwiches).. but if there's no 16gb it's a wasted trip.

Looks like we're getting the dregs of the stock... a couple of dozen 8gb per store.
