Well, obviously not over EDGE or 3G. But ok.

Miles,

They are leaving out a few things. First, you can get a real phone number with Google voice, and, with their web client (and this new client) you can send SMS messages to other phone numbers using this actual phone number.

I currently have a GV number in my local Area code, that anyone can call or text to. Since google currently lets you text with that number, you can send and receive texts with any web accessible device, including the ipod touch over WIFI.

HTH

Just an FYI, you've been able to send SMSs over WiFi for years now.

...for example.

Yep, I have been doing this for years with my iPod Touch. You can also log into many cell provider websites and send / receive text messages using your account page on that telco provider's website. This is provided you have a cell phone with text messaging services.

These features have been out for a while, you just gotta come at it from different angles, like you described above. ;)

Well, obviously not over EDGE or 3G. But ok.

If the app has push for texts, it will work over edge or 3g and work just like current over priced texting. But you can use the browser rigth now to get and send texts as long as you have data access...

Erm, am I missing something? The earlier post you quoted was referring to the iPod touch. How does an iPod touch connect to a 3G or EDGE network without a 3G/EDGE antenna?

What's a different between skype and GV?

You can make calls from Skype on an iOS device, with GV, the calls are forwarded to an actual phone (cell or land line). Currently, the only way to make calls form Google, is to have an active Wifi connection on a computer compatible with Google Talk's phone capability.

If I have a US landline phone, but am in Europe, can I use this app to use my landline phone while on WiFi here?

I hear about Google Voice all the time, yet I don't know anyone who actually uses it. Maybe because everyone I know uses iPhones? I guess we will see what this is like, but even a somewhat tech geek like myself has never really read up on it to understand what it really does or why I should want it. My wife and I have several thousand rollover minutes and barely use our 700 shared plan, so maybe that's why I never cared much. Doesn't it like call you back and somehow make magic phone calls happen for free? Haha.

Nothing in life is free

Google Voice tracks every call you make, every phone number your forward to, every person who calls you as well as every message announcement you make AND every message that is left for you. They then conveniently tie this in with every search you do and every document you create. It's FREE!

Is it worth it?
EXACTLY!
it is not free - you are giving to google and its advertisers all of your personal business, would you let your landscaper sift through records of all of life in exchange for cutting the lawn for you? for some, that's a good exchange, for others, its not. I believe there is nothing free in this world. and google voice certainly isn't.

so: is there a pay version of this offered by anyone who will not snoop on us?

Um... you understand that your day-to-day browsing activity can be monitored by your ISP, right?

You can set up your own LAN or WAN and post guards every 10 feet along every cable run to ensure thre are no hard taps. Then set up your own Asterisk server and use VOIP phones. Forget about wireless anything- not secure. This solution is decidedly not free and will be the best way to prevent snooping.

Can someone provide a link. Too many apps show up when you search for google (ironic that you search for google).

TechCrunch reports that Apple has approved Google's official Google Voice application for the iPhone. The Google Voice app was originally submitted to Apple back in 2009 but was rejected for "duplicating features that come with the iPhone". The rejection became the subject of an FCC investigation regarding Apple's App approval process.

Apple has since published new review guidelines which streamline the approval process. The changes have allowed many developer's apps to finally see approval. Apple has already approved 3rd party Google Voice apps, but the official client from Google should be coming shortly. Despite already being approved, Google is holding back the release in order to revamp the app to support the latest SDK changes including iOS multitasking.

Google Voice is a free phone service that allows U.S. customers to manage incoming calls:

I use it two ways. I give out my GV number only to a few people because it rings my work, home and cell phone number when someone call my GV number. I use it at work to call out of state on my work phone for personal calls.

Sounds like a pain in the Bing Bong.

I use it and love it. It's not about making free calls. It's about having one phone number that you can route in interesting ways based on who is calling you, when they are calling you, where you are, etc.

Um, You understand that Google transcribes your voice mail and uses that? Do you understand that Google mines the text of ANY documents you create using Google Docs? You realize that Google scans all of your Gmail too? 1 company knows everything. Did you see the news of the creepy Google keymaster who was just fired?(Google it if you haven't) What if Google continues to get involved with government and take over some universities email and documents? Does this make you um at all?

Do you realize that all datagrams going to and from your computer to and from the internet go through your ISP? 1 company knows everything. Does this make you um at all?

Honestly, if you're paranoid about Google you're missing the larger picture.

Hahaha...if you're worried about securing your personal business Google is the least of your worries. ISPs and telcos charge you AND have access to tons of personal data. Oh no!!!

Sounds like a pain in the Bing Bong.

Giving out a phone number is pain? Do you give people your number telepathically right now?

Can you elaborate? I believe we are talking about two separate things. I am talking about making actual calls from WIFI on an iPod Touch, without the use of a separate phone, using only google products, not a 3rd party VOIP solution.

Honestly, you are missing the picture.
Your ISP does not mine/sell/use your user data or logs and only disclose that info upon a court order. Google actively offers free stuff in order to mine/sell/use your data personal info. Apparently you are ok with that but many people don't realize the level that Google goes to to harvest your information. What if I gave you a free house but put a hidden camera in every room, went through everything in your mailbox, went through your garbage, logged your schedule and sold it all to the highest bidder? What if I kept track of every conversation you had, every freaky video, and every guest list and I kept that info for the next 50 years? Is the house really free?

Bury your head in the sand (or wherever) if you want but it doesn't make your info safe.
