It's easier for them. This way, instead of having to custom-build a majority of the MBP's, they have two options that are standard, to save them shipping time and cost.

I hope that made sense...

From the forum posts on here it seems that just as many people are going for the 2.16 as are going for the 2.0 or 1.83. So the non-standard option seems just as popular, perhaps even more popular, than their stock options.

I guess the average MacRumors poster is a little more fanatical than the average Mac user though so maybe it's not reprasentative.

You're probably right. Personally, I'm going to be going with the 1.83 config, edu. discount, and no upgrades, with the exception of iWork '06. Hopefully I'll be going with it soon because my local Apple Store said they'd have 'em in my early/mid-next week if not by this coming weekend, although they were supposed to come TODAY (amazing, isn't it?).

I'm sorry, but you guys that just cancelled were kinda dumb. I mean if you would have held on for just a few more days, you would've gotten the upgraded processors and the 'books would ship this week or next

Not very dumb if you really want a smaller version and are willing to wait. Not to boast (cuz I'm NOT) but look at my sig...I'm definitely not hurting for a new machine that badly right now..

I agree, if you are wanting to go for a smaller machine then cancelling was the smartest thing to do. You would have probably ended up getting your 15" MacBook less than a month before they announce 12" MacBooks.

Enjoy your MacBook when you do get it (which will hopefully be not that long after April 1st).

Just because MacBooks might be announced doesn't mean they'll ship soon after...aren't we experiancing this right now?

I agree, it doesn't mean they'll ship right after they are announced. I have a feeling that it won't be as long a wait as it's been for the MacBook Pros for several reasons though...

1) They've had more time to get them done (MacBook Pros and iMacs were in January so it's a whole 3 months extra they've had now).

2) They'll use the same chipsets as the MacBook Pro and the iMac. These have already been implemented into Apple machines, tested and commercially deployed. So less work and testing to do for that in the MacBook.

3) Apple plain messed up the MacBook Pro release. They changed the chips in the machines late in the day which shows they must have changed their strategy and plans and they missed all the shipping estimates they originally gave. Hopefully, they will do their best to avoid a similar mess on the MacBook release.

However, I'm not saying they definitely 100% won't mess up again. I'm just saying that if I were to bet on one or the other I'd bet the MacBook release goes smoother than the MacBook Pro release has.

Well, my 'original shipping date' of 2/15 has now come... And gone... :(

Only 12 more days to wait for shipping. (But, they upgraded me to 2-3 day shipping, along with the new faster processor.)

If it wasn't for the extra-extra 1-2 weeks for the 2.16 upgrade, I would have gone for it. But my poor 12" G4 is dying too quickly to wait the extra time. I mean, I'm actually finding myself relying on my work {shudder} Compaq for day-to-day tasks! It is a 2.26 GHz Pentium-M, though, so it will be nice to have less of a GHz downgrade with the newly updated Core Duo. (Yes, I know dual-core should be faster because of the extra processor, and OS X vs. Windows XP makes it WAY better... But it's still a GHz downgrade.)

Well the UK Apple Store has finally been updated. Did the high end MacBook Pro always come with 1GB memory?

Yes. If you remove processor speed from the equation, high end added: bigger HD, more video RAM, more memory.

Took the plunge...

I finally did it. I put the MBP in the cart and pretended to click "buy now" every day since the keynote. About five minutes ago I stopped pretending.
MacBook Pro 3-4 weeks $1,979.00
1.83GHz Intel Core Duo
512MB 667 DDR2 - 1 SO-DIMM
120GB Serial ATA drive @ 5400 rpm
SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
What's sort of funny is I had my iPod playing The Beatles and as soon as I clicked buy now the song Getting Better came on. Just after that Cant buy me love played. The way I feel $1979.00 just bought me a lot of love. I think my iPod knows. :D

Lol, yeah.. the iPod does display this uncanny 6th sense at times, don't know if it is something that I should get freaked out by or not :p

Well the ram and the new crumpler bag i've ordered for my mbp have arrived so I hope that the delay on the orders is not march!

Hey, I'm waiting on my MacBook Pro as well!

I was really interested in one of the crumpler bags ('the embarrassment' to be exact), but I'm not entirely certain what size to go for. The one designed for the 15" PB seems too small and the other for the 17" PB seems too big. What did you buy?
