dell isn't that bad. Just stay away from their economy notebooks.

WinstonP, I Second that.

Also, to AJBMatrix - I hear IBM use to make awesome PC laptops and I'd probably go that way pre-lenovo. Although now I know nothing about how the ownership and new lenovo name has changed their portables so I'd be really confused which route to take if I had to get a new PC. Maybe Sony though, although Sony is very expensive to the extent it is comparable costs to a apple... Does anyone know if Sony even has a Core Duo laptop yet? Oh well, most of us in this thread will have MacBooks soon but unfortunately still have to deal with Windows, at least until we can dual-boot XP or Vista that is (if that day ever comes or a faster VirtualPC for the new intel-macs comes out). I've pretty much given up on dual-booting XP but am still hoping it may be done with Vista in the future, or if not that a Virtual PC that runs at least 3/4 Speed will come out. If I can run emulation of windows (even if against my will) at similar speeds to my 1.3 GHZ centrino Dell then I'll be very content and can finally be tied to only one machine!

Woohoo!!

I just ordered my first Mac!

I've been lurking these forums for a while, and finally I worked up the courage to switch. I'm getting a 1,83 MacBook Pro with a 7200rpm Disc, and my 5 year old Dell is going into retirement!

:D

Thankfully somebody got us back on topic.:) Any news re: shipping yet?

Congratulations! I switched from a 2 year old dell to Mac Mini and now a year old mini to a MacBook Pro and I consider this to be a huge switch. I can't imagine the kind of joy you'll be in for when your MBP arrives... From a 5 year old dell, you are most certainly in for a treat!

Im gonna leave my order running for atleast another week or so and see what happens.. im thinking (maybe hoping!) the revised march the 10th date is a 'worst case scenario' estimate.. I ordered it because i want it!

How long does it take for the hold to be removed from your credit card?

It lasts until it expires or the company that put the hold removes it. I think it's 5 days from when it was made in the states. Don't know what the rules are in the UK.

I'm sorry, but you guys that just cancelled were kinda dumb. I mean if you would have held on for just a few more days, you would've gotten the upgraded processors and the 'books would ship this week or next

Wow....hours before the announcement. Hurry go buy a 2.16 ghz model so you can get it shipped in 1-3 days! (If thats true.)

Meh, when I'm spending close to £2000 on something the product alone isn't a compelling enough reason to stick with the company. The customer service has to be up to my expectations as well and in this case it hasn't been.

I called Apple to enquire about the hold on my credit card and asked about the updated models and as it happens they seem to be able to ship one as a priority order due to the company I work for, so even if I do reorder I should be able to get one within about a fortnight.

Nope. It appears that only 100% stock configs are shipping soon. Even then, it appears that the new 'earliest' ship date is really the 18th.

Custom orders (like mine,) are stated as shipping on the 28th, and apparently someone who upgraded to 2.16 was quoted mid-March as a ship date. (The Apple customer service guy I spoke with said "3-4 weeks" for 2.16, and "sooner" for my order. But that was before I got my 'reconfirm' email stating the 28th.)

Dammit, I want the 2.16, I'm willing to pay the extra, but I'm absolutely *NOT* willing to wait an extra 1-3 weeks. (Over my already about two-week delayed order.) My old PB is dying. I need a replacement as soon as possible.

My stock configuration is scheduled for the 28th as well, so it's not just CTO orders. I'm hopeful it'll go out before then, but there's really no telling.

On one hand I'm disappointed that it's not going out on the estimated shipping date, but in all fairness when we ordered last month, the only delivery estimate they gave us was "February". If it ships on or before the 28th, they've kept that promise, even though they did set false expectations with the order status we've been looking at for the last month.

All in all, it's worth the wait, particularly with the automatic processor upgrades.

Ok, I am totally ready for my MBP. The 2x1GB of RAM just arrived today. The WoW arrived yesterday. Now all I need is the computer. It would make everything perfect.

Quick, break the WoW disc in half before it's too late. :(

Yeah, I know it is going to suck my life into the little world but I need something to do other than this forum. No offense but I am bored. Class is no challenge. I have 2 jobs. And I am bored. My fiance studies a lot for her last few classes and I have nothing else to do.

Yay! I just ordered my MacBook Pro!

I opted for a stock model, the cheaper one. It's good for everything I'll need it for and a whole lot more besides. I look forward to getting it sometime before 2007!

Subliving

EDIT: March 17th arrival date. Hmm, we'll see.

Looking at the store I find the two different MacBook Pro offerings a little strange as they are just the same machine right? I mean why not just have one MacBook Pro and have the three CPU customizations and two GPU cards on the one page?

I know they done this with the PowerBooks (and really all their machines) too but I don't see why. Like the 15" PowerBook had a 1.5GHz and 1.67GHz model at one point and as well as the CPU difference they also had different CD drivers. Why? Why not just have the one model and make it customizable to whatever?

It's easier for them. This way, instead of having to custom-build a majority of the MBP's, they have two options that are standard, to save them shipping time and cost.

I hope that made sense...
