Haha. Is this is legal jargon too?

"Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."

Yes yes I do realize Apple's statements regarding the issue and they are in their right to do that. But if they are going to brick my phone then I am not going to quietly sit on the side and pout cause of some legal stuff.

I found a way to get it fixed and I don't feel bad about it one bit. I suggest others to do the same if the Genius will not replace their phone with the blacklisted IMEI number.

Terms? You mean all those pages of legal jargon. If Apple is going to be dirty and brick my phone then I'm going to use dirty tactics to get it fixed.

jon
Pages, try a paragraph on the box of EVERY iPhone. You can read it BEFORE you even purchase and or open.

How hard is this to get through your head. They are NOT intentionally "bricking" your iPhone. They WARNED you ahead time, the next update may or may not render your iPhone inoperable , if you violated their terms and hacked it with 3rd party software. You chose to update ANYWAYS.:confused::confused::confused:

Thats my only question too! Why would you go ahead and risk it? I just want to understand your reasoning behind that decision to go ahead and try it even before confirmations of actual bricking occurs came pouring in.

I risked it because I did the update as soon as it came out. There were no reports of phones being bricked that early. I did expect my phone to be kicked to the curb in terms of loosing all my software and even my unlocked status. If anything I should have been able to restore my phone and go back to the way things were.

Apple didn't do that and instead it hosed my phone entirely. From reading the iPhone Dev teams responses I have a feeling Apple did do this intentionally and could have avoided this mess.

Either way it doesn't matter and I'm not mad at Apple. I've been tinkering with Apple's products since I was 4 and have broken many things that wouldn't have been broken if I followed the rules. Apple's update broke my phone without any recourse of reverting back so I felt it was in my best interest to get my phone replaced instead of saying oh well and buying another phone.

Will I hack my phone again, probably not because I'm an ATT customer. I just wanted to unlock my phone cause you can and I'm a nerd like that.

Not Intentional?!?!

Not Intentional?

I think that you guys are crazy to think that apple is "not intentionally" breaking the iphone. Especially when good old jobs said the following in London; the company is in a “cat and mouse” game with hackers.

And you don't think that this update bricked the phones?!? SHEESH. They probably had their dev team download every hack for this phone and figure a way for this update to screw up each hack.

So what if ijon knew that he might have a bricked phone. He obviously has the resources not to worry if he does need the phone or he would have been more cautious. Somebody has to have the balls to do it so the rest of you people with hacked phones will know what to expect. He should be congratulated.

Furthermore the fact that phones are tied to different GSM (or CDMA carriers for that matter) Is totally retarded. People should be able to take their phone from one carrier to another as long as the carrier is on the same standard. The fact that they don't is totally un-American and monopolistic. It reminds me of the old bell company. In the early days you couldn't use any phone but the expensive ones that were sold by the Bell company. They were more expensive and offered the consumers less choice. The excuse to people was that phones made outside of the Bell company could potentially damage the network.... (Hmm where have I heard that before... Verizon) Well, Congress finally came along and inquired why these telephones made by other manufactures with the same parts couldn't be used. They didn't buy the phone company's excuse and forced Bell to allow telephones manufactured by other companies onto the network. Lowering prices, increasing selection and spurring competition.

This is why phones in Europe and Japan are WAY ahead of most phones on market on the US. It is much easier to use an unlocked phone on any network in those countries. I am sorry to say it, but the government needs to get involved and not allow this kind of relationship for ANY headset manufacture and carrier. Could you imagine if you stil had to by a particular handset for your home phone service because of such regulations? Why should it be any different for the Cell companies. Just like porting numbers, it is another excuse that the phone companies say is hard to do.

It is a shame that apple is helping ATT have a monopolistic roll in the US by forcing people to use one particular GSM carrier, when the phone could easily run on any GSM Network. The fact is that it is all about money. Profits before the people. Apple = The next MS.

I agree that cell phones shouldn't be tied to a certain carrier. It sucks. And you should write your representatives if you feel strongly about it. But thats how business is done. And Apple is a business looking out for it's best interest and that of it's shareholders.
I hate when people say Apple is the next Microsoft because they locked down the iPhone. DON'T BUY IT if you don't want it the way it is.

I bricked mine with the update

I did a restore thinking it would relock my phone I was wrong

I had my 14 day exchange policy still so I took out the sim and told them it locks up and freezes all the time they gave me a new one

So there you go steve your bricked iphone that you created with that dumb update back in your hands Thanks for my new Iphone

Ignore the rules.
Lie
Get what you want.

What a value system.

I don't own an Iphone for that exact reason. I prefer to utilize my energy to contact my reps about bringing the troops home and more pressing issues... Besides you will find several sites and groups that have been dedicated to freeing phones from carriers prior to the iphone even being known, and they are still at it. Because the lobbyist can buy far more democracy than you or I.

Say what you will about disliking people like me for saying that apple is the next MS, But the fact of the matter is that the way that apple has released the iphone the OS was locked to end users. Giving apple the ability to dictate who uses the phone on what network and what is installed on it. Locking out the little guys from being able to develop much of anything. The only time apps will be added is by apple and companies that Apple has partnered with.

I'd say that's pretty monopolistic. No small developers will be able to make any apps that would bring them profit, Assuring that all apps that you want are purchased through Apple. Just like paying for ring tones or how in the past you used to have to pay for quicktime just to use full screen. (MS didn't even do that with windows media player.) The Iphone would be awesome if the same tools were given to developers who already make programs for OSX.

All apple cares about is the share holders. You are an idiot if you think that their following products are not going to share the same limits currently imposed on the iphone! Especially given the fact that this model allows apple to generate additional income through the use of all third party apps as they are generated.

I did not say I dislike people that say Apple is the next MS. I said I hate when people say it. I'm not going to dislike someone that I don't know just because of an opinion they hold, even if I dislike their opinion.

Everything you say I mostly agree with. But I still don't see why this upsets people. Every verizon phone I have ever owned has been locked up (maybe not unlocking) but Apple has an easier ability to stay on top of it with updates.

Do I want 3rd Party apps?
Sure, at least I want the option.

Do I want Apple's continuted software updates support?
Absolutely.

Apple obviously has their reasons to lock it up (most likely financial) and I'm ok with their decision making. Its not that outrageous of an act. As long as the OS X on my computer continues to be the way it is I'm happy.

If shareholders are happy most likely consumers are....someone is buying stuff. Or am I wrong?

I'm getting tired of the bickering in this thread and you people that want to gloat and/or just talk about the possible (none) legal issues. Go to another thread. This thread is for helping people that want the update. Fools I tell you...:eek::eek::eek:

Didn't Homer Simpson tell his sandwich once that he was going to open and close his mouth and walk forward. If the sandwich happened to get in his way and get eaten, it was the sandwich's fault

Where is your personal responsibility? You also could have avoided this mess. But you chose not to...

I unlocked, but was planning to stay with ATT. The only reason I did this was because I travel abroad and need to use local sims. I have done this with every other phone I have owned. This is BS. Anyway, I am waiting to update until a solution is provide to fix the activation issues.

Wow, someone using their brain. That's refreshing after reading about so many that just hit the 'update' button like lemmings, after being warned (duh!) that the update would brick their phone.

Lets revive this thread!

Ok i need some info, any of you unlocked your phone with AnySim and then updated to 1.1.1?

What message do you get?
Were some of you able to downgrade?

I creashed my phone after unlocking it with anysim so the only practical choice i have is updating then downgrading i just need to know what happens when you do the update.

have some of your phones died? like not turning on anymore? have those been exchaged thru apple? im still in my 14 day return period (does that apply for refurbs?).

ill really appreciate any of this info, as i need to take the plunge, i cant bear seeing that iphone on the drawer :(

Great thread!

I am not ever updating until they add some useful things like mass SMS, and the ability to delete multiple emails.

Some of the AT&T users are gloating that they can update and while others have bricked but I dont see the incentive to update. Wifi Itunes doesnt seem that compelling. This wait until Leopard attitude will likely yeild more of the same incremental improvement

Exactly!! Hahah, I'm thinking - "why the hell would someone risk a bricked phone just to be able to buy music from starbucks!?" come on now. No way am I updating.

Side question: Is "Installer.app" equivalent to having an "unlocked/possibly bricked" iphone? Or are they only bricking people who have taken the steps to actually use other cards/T-Mobile/etc?
