ah, that's what kills me - as I've posted before, in 2000, (8 years ago!) I bought a foot sensor/watch system from nike that worked on the same technology as the nike+ and was dead accurate. I took it on measured courses and it would never be off by more than .01 per mile, and usually it was exact, at any pace. Now, this cost a fair bit more than the $30 the nike+ costs... but it was 8 years ago! I know they could do it today if they wanted, but I'm guessing that 90% of nike+ users don't know or don't care how inaccurate it is.

I too keep a separate, more accurate log. I've kept paper running logs since I started high school.

Nike+ is fun, don't get me wrong, but I'm a little miffed at having to spend more money for a product that simply does not work as advertised.

well, Timex makes something similar to what you are describing, but it costs as much as a garmin. (around $300 or so). i guess you get what you pay for

nike still makes something like it too, but it includes a heart rate monitor and a $370 price tag now. :( When I got mine it was like this but just with the foot pad and the watch.

Yeah I have the accuracy issue too, I run the same route 3 times a week. Once slower with my Wife, once with speed intervals ans once at full pace. It's measured at 5.4km, 4.6km and 4.8km each time, based on MapmyRun I think 4.8km is the most accurate, so fine for my normally running pace, but it looks to me like it pays to be slow :)

yep, it punishes speedwork! :p

garmin's new (set to be released in June) watch, the 405, looks awesome. It's actually the size of a real watch. I tried out the 205 for a while, but ended up returning it because its user interface was not that friendly (buttons hard to press, menus overly complicated) and it was really pretty massive. The 405 certainly solves the latter problem, and if it solves the former as well, I may end up buying it.

Also, I've broken down and ordered my replacement nike+, along with a new sensor pouch. I'm going to try the Marware velcro one. I have the one that threads through your laces, and I haven't been entirely happy with it because it seems like it's always shifting around. Plus, if I want to wear my running shoes anywhere else (i.e. not running) it's annoying to take off, and looks stupid when it's attached.

that's cool about the 405. i was really thinking about getting a 305 late last year, but ended deciding not too. just isn't worth the money to me.

i think i have the Marware one you are talking about. i like it. the sensor doesn't move at all.

Yes, thank you again Ziwi! :)

I just crested 350 total Nike+ miles (since midsummer last year, when I got the system). My run last night was CRAP... my sensor popped out of my shoe and I had to stop and start over, and considering that I set a new personal training record for 5k in 24:16 earlier in the week, 26:40-something is kind of sad... :p But I ran. ;)

And I am making progress on that speed goal. My total Nike+ average pace was about 8:45 when I hit 200 miles total, and as you can see, it's just over 8:30 now -- my training runs are more often at an average pace faster than 8 min/mile than not, last night notwithstanding...

Nike+ challenges

I just sent a PM to Ziwi to get added to the Nike+ challenges. I never expected to find running threads on a computer forum. I usually go to Runner's World for that.
Anyways, I'm not very fast but I like to run far. My goal is to do a Marathon in October. You can see my personal running page here:
http://web.mac.com/david.m.ely/Elyfamily/Running_Page.html

I love the Nike+ as it always adds miles to my runs! :D I use the Training Log on Runner's World as well as my wife's Garmin 205 for accurate milage.

I look forward to adding my milage to the MacRumors challenges.

In and done - welcome to the party!

still waiting on my new nike+ and new pouch... shipping is taking forever. :( You've let me down, amazon. The old one is holding on... but flashing warnings at me constantly.

so have you gotten it yet?

so after my 23 mile run on saturday, my knee has been killing me. I can hardly run. I'm so upset about this... :(

i'm very sorry to hear that. you think it's tendonitis? IT band?

Low battery warnings, or is it dying in some other way? How many miles did you get out of it (not that I'll run as many miles in the next decade as you did in the last year :p )?

most likely low battery warnings

Low battery warnings. Got about 2000 miles out of it, which is Ok I guess.

Yeah, the new kit arrived, as did the new shoe pouch. The velcro pouch is a lot better.

The knee problem is something I've had for years. It flared up again when I hit my knee falling on the ice about 6 weeks ago, and this long run just pushed it over the edge. It's called Patella Femoral Syndrome. The short version is that the patella tendon gets inflamed, and then the kneecap irritates it more as it tracks over the tendon. And the worse it gets, the easier it gets to make it worse still. A very quick and nasty downward spiral.

I use a knee band to avoid that type of knee problem. Luckily, mine hasn't flared too bad this year.

glad you got the new kit. yeah i like my velcro pouch also.

i gotcha. i've had similar problems in the past with patella tendonitis. for me, the only way to get over it was time off. probably all that you can do also, i'm assuming. another thing i always did is try to strengthen my leg muscles around it - so quads and hamstrings mainly. stretch as much as possible, and use the "stick" to massage them also.

hope you get better

you probably are talking about patella tendonitis, which is similar. i've tried the knee band before also, and it might help a little, but not a bunch

I've used that band in the past, and it sort of helps, but not that much. What it can do is list the kneecap off of the tendon a little bit, so there's less rubbing and therefore less irritation.

Thanks. The leg strengthening is key. One of the worst things about this injury is that if you take too much time off, your leg muscles get weaker, and then, when you come back, your legs are too weak to take all of the strain off of the knee, so the problem ends up recurring.

Stretching is good too, but only once the inflammation has gone down a bit.

Ice (I use ice cups) and anti-inflammatories are the staples of my recovery plan.

It's a hard injury to get rid of, and it always threatens to come back if you hurt your knee or even overtrain. I'm just hoping I can shake it soon because I don't have a lot of time to waste.
