Sorry - but at the prices they're charging, this simply isn't special / premium enough. At all.

Compare this to the packaging, for example, for the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I believe this is a special edition, but still could cost considerably less than the Apple Watch Edition..

Compare it to a Patek Philippe, Rolex or even Maurice Lacroix packaging. You will see the desired similarity I guess they're trying to create.

The bigger and more eyecatching the packagings are designed, the less exclusive the manufactorer typically is regarded.

Nevertheless, I quite like the packaging.

Why on earth does anyone need a bunch of tools and a tool box for a watch??

Oh, its mechanical. Needs maintenance.

I wonder who will be the first person on the planet to buy this idiotic expensive model.
Not like real watch which have some value, investing 10k for technology which will be obsolete a year from now is so idiotic that I can't believe apple really did that .

People who have several thousand $$$ to burn and want to pretend to be hip.
Like Kanye West.

And the tech will not be outdated in year, or two, or 3.
After all mechanical watches have been around for centuries, not obsolete yet!
Just change the batteries in :apple:Watch, still goes.

Can't afford it huh?

Apple should open a town in China named Switzerland, so they can say its made in Switzerland lmao

Apple edition box

APPLE EDITION BOX IS CHEEEEEEEEEEEZY.....!!!!!

SO SAD THAT APPLE DID THIS....

WHAT I MEAN BY "THIS" IS , COME OUT WITH A WATCH THAT YOU CHARGE PEOPLE AN ASSSSSSS LOAD OF THERE HARD EARNED AMERICAN CASH FOR WHAT? ALL THREE WATCHES HAVE THE SAME TECHNOLOGY CHIPS IN THEM. SO WHAT, THE GOLD CASE IN WEIGHT & FOR THAT MATTER ITS STYLE IS NO WHERE NEAR WORTH THAT MUCH MONEY. OK TELL ME WHAT? or WHY? THE BOX IT COMES IN SUCKS TOO...
I FREAKIN LOVE APPLE PRODUCTS BUT THE HIGH END MODEL IN MY OPINION
IS A JOKE & A HALF....
OK, I EXPRESSED MY OPINION, I'M DONE.. THANK YOU

The box is disappointing.

Couldn't they have reprogrammed one of their milling robots to sculpt a beautiful box out of solid aluminum or stainless steel?

Apple could've gone to town on it and still made blush-inducing profits on the Edition.

Opportunity lost.

While that is way nicer packaging, the Edition box is supposed to serve as a charging dock also. If your main point is the size of it, I can't imagine that having a big box would be convenient to have on a desk or counter if it's meant to be used as a charger.

And all of you people talking about the Edition being so expensive.."I could buy a Hyundai at that price!!!" You guys clearly know nothing about the fashion world that Apple is trying to enter. But hey you can buy 2,000 pairs of shoes at Target for the price of some Gucci loafers!!!

So little of the metal is showing, someone wearing a $13,000 watch may just walk right on passed you. Not worth it compared to other collectable watches

Can't afford it huh?

I hope that a person who can afford it, got his fortune by using his brain thus I hope he will use this same organ to conclude that paying for a gadget in gold box that will be obsolete in one year from now is idiotic at best.

As far as Apple want to make it a fashion gadget it is not.
Fashion is something you can wear over and over a year or maybe even 4 years from now.
This gold box will be useless in a year from now.
So you are paying 17k just to make a statement for one year?
Would you buy iPhone 1 in gold case? Just to make a statement? I guess not...

It won't be outdated in a year? Really???? when the new watch will come?
So you can change the battery, whaw... What about the cpu? The screen? The new design that will come and make this one look idiotic.
A mechanical watch been around for centuries for being mechanical and hand crafted, thus contain some historic value, beauty and can really last for centuries as it is the same mechanism over and over again.
Here it is a gadget on the hand not a real watch.
Just small iPhone on the hand.

Not really. It may have dramatically different capabilities, but it is still a direct replacement for - and thus competitor for - existing, non-smart-watches. I can't imagine many people wearing an Apple Watch and a normal watch.

It may be competition for non-smart-watches but I don't think watch makers have any fear of this snatching their markets away just yet because like you say, it is so dramatically different when compared to the watches they make.

The sentimental connection people have with classic watches is just one of many reasons that separate them so completely from this tech. I don't see people having the same connection to the Apple Watch. Its functional tech not jewellery.

Also, making it in gold isn't going to convince luxury watch owners who have spent tens of thousands of dollars/pounds on their watches to buy one.

At the end of the day its a nice thing and while I see the massive popularity among Apple customers, its unlikely to completely change peoples tastes or the world for that matter. Some people are happy with the old.

I think that's the million dollar question. (Assuming people won't wear both a luxury watch and an Apple Watch), will people give up on the uniqueness, design, battery life etc. of the luxury watch for the features and convenience of a smart-watch. I guess we'll find out. Me, I'm firmly in the nice, old-fashioned watch camp, though I'm very interested in what the smart-watches evolve into.

Did Apple make a mistake in marketing this as a watch, thus drawing unto themselves unwanted battery life and price comparisons? And putting them head to head against every "traditional" watch & watch-maker?

Or was it an inspired decision? If Apple was sold as a iBracelet, or Wrist Gadget, the average consumer would say - why do I need that? What does it do that I need? But a "watch"? Everyone knows what that's for so Apple doesn't need to fight a battle just to justify the niche.

That’s lame packaging as well, and by the looks of it is their entry level ‘I have a Rolex’ Rolex, which is well below $10,000.

The watch in that picture is a Datejust 16013-well below entry level. It is an older model(1980s) but the current equivalent is right around $10,000.

damn. at that price, you'd think they'd have used some wood and luxury packaging, like this big wooden case Pateks come in.
