Official Smash Bros. Brawl Thread [SPOILERS!]

It was stated on stage at E3 2005 when they announced Smash Bros.
It was confirmed in developer interviews as well several times, such as this one at E3 2006:

As for actual online matches, I guess we'll truly find out in a couple of months. Just because a game has "online functionality" and "Wi-Fi connection compatibility," doesn't necessarily mean that the game will have online, multiplayer matches. It could simply be a way to trade screen grabs, scores, trophies (to unlock characters) or similar things like that. Prime 3 has "online functionality" and "Wi-Fi connection compatibility" yet it doesn't have any multiplayer, does it?
For the record, I believe Smash will have online matches. It would be very foolish not to include that with a game of this type.

I wouldn't say that's confirmation. I might say to the wife "I plan to do the dishes tonight"...it doesn't mean I'm going to.
I really, really, really hope it is online.

...Satoru Iwata announcing it on stage isn't enough for you? He specifically said Smash Bros will let you battle online using Nintendo Wi-Fi connection.
In due time I'm sure...but with that logic Meta Knight isn't in Brawl? Or Snake?

Metanight is in for sure. They keep saying he's a charecter. Lik ein todays update. But for some reason they never make him his own update.

There's really no argument or ambiguity. Nintendo has said it five or six times at this point; once on stage, by the CEO himself, another time by the CEO in an interview, in at least two or three interviews with the director and in a blog post by the director.
Apparently, people think that the game still doesn't have online play despite all this.
Doubt it's real.
If Sonic is in the game, he WILL be on the box imo.
Third party characters will be unlockables, and therefore won't be on the box.
