Screen protector for what? To protect against your sharp beard?

The screen is GLASS. Screen protectors are a waste of money. I've owned every iPhone since 2007 and I've never had even the slightest scratch on any screen. And that includes one iPhone that I dropped on asphalt.

you must be very lucky. Original iPhone less than a week in, it was ALWAYS in my pocket or hand thats it. big ass scratch. I got it replaced but i have been screen protecting ever since. I don't trust their claims.

Riiiiiight, you treat it like a baby, always in your pocket with absolutely nothing else in there, not even a bit of grit, and mysteriously it gets a big ass sratch on it. Rubbish.

The longest I owned one phone for was 5 years - not one single mark on it, with use almost every day. People whining about scratches clearly do not look after their stuff.

well i honestly can't make you believe that i treated that phone like it was a baby. All i have is my experience to share. It somehow got a scratch on it, i assume from sand in my pocket. Oh wait, I'm a 20 year old adult who doesn't play in sand pits, where does this magic sand come from? i guess lint cause glass scratches? It doesn't make sense. To each his own.

We can all decide what we want to do. I just remember how shocked and dismayed i felt when i saw the scratch so i wanna prevent others from feeling that way, especially when it comes to expensive items that we all want to keep looking awesome.

I happen to believe in cases for phones. Every phone I've ever owned, including those "El Cheapos" from Verizon that I used before my first iPhone, lived in a case. When I passed my phone on, upon purchasing a new one, it was very close to being as pristine as when it came out of it's packaging.

This phone is certainly no exception to the rule. As a matter of fact even more so because it is mkade of glass front and back. As I've posted on other threads, anyone not using a case is courting disaster or catastrophe.

To our photographer friends I would ask, "you put lens caps on your $600.00 camera lenses, but not on a $600.00 iPhone. Strange.

All I can say is, I've never had a scratch on any screen of any personal mobile device, EVER. If you don't look after it, scratches happen, just like on yours.

After 11 months in my pocket with no screen protector my 3GS screen maintained 100% of it's phobia of oleos and was scratch free

I prefer the feel of the anti-glare protectors on the front of the phone. It has less to do with protection and more to do with look and feel... for me.

Same here. When I got my iPhone 3G, I used it for the first few days without a screen protector and then with an anti-glare so I could compare. I much prefer the feeling of interacting with the screen with a protector on--can't quite put my finger on why. Also, a bunch of my iPhone use is outdoors and I like the anti-glare.

That being said, when I get an iPad later in the summer (which I plan to often use outside) I'm not going to use any protectors. I just don't want to deal with applying a screen protector on something of that size (plus, I trust the glass to stay in good shape and it is not like it will fit in the pockets of my sandy unwashed pants).

To those going naked, how often do you actually use your phone? I use mine constantly, maybe its a use thing. Like if you don't use it, you don't scratch it.

Scratch or not, IT'S A PHONE, PEOPLE! Why are so many members on this forum OCD?

I have a MacBook Air that I paid $2500 for. It has a few scratches here and there and a slight dent on one corner. Doesn't bother me in the least. I bought the machine to use it, not baby it.

A lot.

Front right pocket: phone and leather wallet, nothing else. At all. Ever.

Hands wiped off when using/typing on it.

Make sure pants/whatever is clean when wiping phone on it.

But I've been that way since my first cell phone in 1995 so it's not as though the iPhone created that behavior.

It's not OCD for me. Yes it is a phone. It is also valued at nearly $700 at purchase, making it one of the most expensive consumer phones you can buy right now. Two years without any scratches I can sell mine to cover the cost of my next phone, which I did this year.

It's a logical financial decision, for some of us. For others, yes, they do suffer from OCD.

Do you buy a $80,000 car and ram into a tree to prove you're not OCD and are all about using it?

My 2 yo 3G is in mint condition, no case, no screen protector. Never babied it, dropped on concrete once, got lucky - a case wouldn't have made any difference. I just make a point of putting it in an empty pocket.

No scratches on the screen or on the entire phone? The plastic back scratches very easily, so I take it you mean the screen only.

If you care about resale, you do realize that you can buy a replacement glass screen for the 3GS for less than $15 and a replacement back cover for about the same? Time will tell how expensive iPhone 4 parts are but I doubt it'll be at much more expensive.

It will be much more expensive on iPhone 4. With the 3GS and all older iPhones you could buy just the glass to replace cracked glass, however with iPhone 4 the glass is fused to the LCD (an expensive one at that) and the digitizer.

I had my 3G for 2 years, kept it in my pocket with my keys and everything with no screen protector and never had a scratch. However I've seen enough pics to know that it can get scratched. With glass on both sides now I did get a screen protector for the back side to protect the glass but I'm leaving the front naked, it just looks better and feels better and I want to enjoy my phone to its fullest :D

Unless glass is a euphenism for nanodiamond, it can be scratched.

Yeah, there are a couple materials that scratch glass, but the most common, and probably the source for 90% of scratches on iPhone screens is Quartz, which is most commonly found in sand or dirt. I never put screen protectors on my iPhones, my last one had a few minor scratches on the front. As long as you realize that the screen is pretty resistant but be wary of sand and other situations that may involve quartz your phone should be fine without a screen protector.

I've noticed that my 3GS (which was delivered to me on launch day 6-19-09, and is used heavily every day) display is MUCH more difficult to keep clean than it was earlier in its life cycle...I was chalking that up to the Oleo coating wearing off...while it was on there it did in fact clean very easily...
My iPhone4 display is also very easy to clean. Basically, one wipe with a microfiber cloth and it is clean...I'm a fan of the Oleo coating...:D

Same here. Although I skipped buying the 3GS. :)
