I don't think you can claim to be a 'computer nerd' if you look at a mac and say "ugh it's a mac!"

Office mac does suck. But hey, a windows based program works better in windows, go figure.
Yup. Too bad Apple can't capitalize on such a market. If they could bring iWork compatibility up to a flawless level with Office, they could sell iWork to every Mac user easily.

I just switched from Office Mac to iWork and it's a difficult transition. I am a computer programmer but ironically have very basic needs for word processing and have found Office on my Mac to be easy to use and liked it better than the PC version. I can't even get pages to do half the stuff I want it do yet. I would never use windows for any version of any software unless I have to (IE testing).

actually, many so-called "computer nerds" are very disdainful of macs since they tend to cost more than a comparable PC.
The one's who are all up on linus torvald and RMS's dick are just disdainful of everything that has a GUI and doesn't take 6 days to compile. freaking linux users

I don't think there's really a connection between the two. Learning a programme constrains you to adapting to another person's interface logic (or lack thereof in the case of Office 2007) whereas programming it's you who dictates how the user interacts with it. :)

i dont understand the point of starting this thread. how is it even relevant to this section? there seriously needs to be a section reserved for fanboys, flamers, idiots, etc. this thread would go there.

honestly.. im a student and i use powepoint a lot.

i love my mac, but lots of times when opening a pppresentation made on a PC on a Mac a lot of stuff (especially pictures) get lost or don't work. Ive seen it happen a lot.

:)

Even going from Office 2007 to the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 2007 SP2 has issues. For example, we had a PPT with some logos set with transparency. The view couldn't do the transparency, so it's not as portable as some think.

This is because Microsoft sucks. They write the same program for two platforms and can't get basic formatting to match. What a joke.

They do this on purpose to protect their marketshare. More people would become less dependent on Microsoft if Office was completely compatible across operating systems. Heck, I bet Apple would gain a few more percentage points if Office 04/08 were completely compatible with the Windows versions.

There's no point. If it entertains some people then more power to them, if it doesn't then there's plenty of other more substantial threads to choose from. Whatever floats your boat at the end of the day.

I thought that office 08(mac) and office 07(windows) were compatible with each other? Its the whole reason my teachers told me to get office 08, because files are interchangeable, and they would not have any problems opening files i sent them.

Nope. Office 08 for Mac would be equivalent with Office 03 for Windows to begin with, but those aren't all that compatible either.

This actually happens quite often between Windows machines running the same version of office; it's because people don't know that they should use the "Link and Import" radio button instead of just the "Link" radio button when importing images. If you use the latter, you must have the images in a place where the powerpoint can access them, preferably in a folder with the .ppt itself.

Agreed; the .doc support that TextEdit has is better at preserving formatting than Office 08 Mac is.

Heh, I think any computer geek worth his salt should know how to use Windows, OS X, Linux and Unix without hiccups and without complaining. You're not a computer geek if you just consolidate yourself to 86.4% of the market share, or 10% of the market share for that matter. (Yes, I'm looking at you Apple users, ye who think they know more than any mere Windowsling...)

For something like a presentation, he/she probably did not want to have to ask how to do anything. I would not want to use a machine I was not comfortable with either.

If the Mac is running OSX, he might be uncomfortable, and if it is running Windows, the scroll issues would keep me from wanting to use it for any kind of presentation.

Even if you know how to use them, different touchpads/key controls can be daunting to use while you are giving a presentation.

Don't worry. My law prof couldn't get a dvd to play in his laptop so since I was sitting in the front row (no pun intended) I fired up dvd player and went to plug it in. The problem was we couldn't use DVI (that the non unibody macbook pros have) and I didn't have my VGA adapter with me, so the guy goes "OK DOES ANYONE HAVE A COMPUTER THAT'S NOT A MAC" which I guess is a legit question since I don't see very many Windows laptops with DVI (though many have HDMI nowadays) ;)

You're correct. I don't know what problems other people are having, but I've never had an issue with opening PC-made Office files in the Mac version of Office. Opening them in iWork, however, is a different story.

So, by that logic Intuit (maker of Quickbooks) also sucks? No, it's more a issue of porting everything over, and the cost effectiveness of it. It's not cost effective to burn a lot of money and time to make everything work as well on a Mac (with it's much lower market share) as it works on a PC.
