Exactly, they should have evolved the design instead of getting a completely different one, the old design was more flexible, they will have to revamp the design again eventually because this much flatter design is harder to change in a subtle way.


The old "design" was entirely bitmap. The new "design" is entirely vector graphics based. Vector graphics work better and faster for rendering and scaling with various screen sizes and resolutions. Bitmap graphics are really a pain and add slowness and bulk to to OS, especially with dealing with multiple screen sizes at high density resolutions.

I was talking about the way it looks, not the way it's drawn.
 
Not sure why everyone is so focused on how the icons look, when the iPhone itself looks like an old lady's phone.

I, for one, will be replacing my 4s with an iPhone 6 since I'm due for a new phone under my plan. If anything, those who are really concerned with appearance (I personally couldn't care less), and stuck with the iPhone 5s or older, should be more concerned with how outdated and tiny the iPhone itself looks.
Because the size of a phone makes it outdated/old somehow? :confused:
 
iOS 7 items appear to be designed, but not drawn by the system, in vector (I am a graphic designer myself) however in the filesystem they are still in .PNG raster.

My 2 cents,
Personally, I rely on design queues to make sense of a busy screen.

With absolutely no context as to what's what and what to press it's confusing. Additionally all the blurs make me feel like my eyes are out of focus, making me try and try in an endless loop to get in focus, giving me an immediate headache.

Lastly, after removing all true material-like skeumorphism, we're left with blinding empty white space all over the OS, just more to feed the headache.

And yes, I have very happily downgraded from a 5c to a 3G.

yes my old iPhone 4S looks like a tamagochi to me now. cant believe that oddly egg shaped screen was ever revolutionary. crazy how technology changes
Well, plenty of people who don't want huge screens and phones as well. The size doesn't really say much about it being old or bad, just basically about what someone wants and/or likes, nothing more really.

I certainly respect your opinion, though as a professional graphic and multi-media artist, I also respectfully disagree. There is no one universal truth to design. It is more subjective than anything else. If we confine our design ideals to one vision of practicality, we lose out. Certainly we would never have the automobile or the airplane or e-ink displays. iOS in my opinion is far more cohesive and consistent across the OS than anything iOS previous. Certainly more cohesive and consistent than Android OS, presently.
 
It's like anything... My girlfriend is still on iOS 6 and when I first use her phone, it everything looks more coarse and chunky. But after an hour or so you don't notice anymore, but you still notice how much more responsive it is. Then I go back to 7, where I like its crispness but the delays are very noticeable again.

And while I agree 6 is visually unattractive by comparison, it isn't actually hard on your eyes. Light grey thin text on medium-light grey background is actually hard on them.

Where do you see light grey thing text on medium-light grey background?

I have to agree you have very valid points, and that one style can not satisfy everybody.

However, as I see it, graphic design can be very distant in terms of work from UI design. Generally graphics are for display or labeling whereas a UI is intended to be physically interacted with.

Regardless, a majority of people like iOS 7, and the rest don't so it is a mixed bag. It is entirely their choice to open the signing window for iOS 5-6 or perhaps open up a "texture" option under Accessibility (which they likely won't with Jony at the top).

Design is not as black and white of either like or don't. It is subjective.

Why should Apple keep signing iOS 5-6, when under the hood -major changes were made to the OS -notably multitasking, new apps built for iOS 7+ won't necessarily work fully? iOS 7 isn't just a difference in the sprinkles on top of the OS. The lump of clay underneath the hood has changed also. I am sure Apple doesn't want to keep security updating old iOS 5-6, which doesn't really have support for activation lock or newer iCloud integration features.

Not to mention developers would have to have multiple versions of their apps to work across multiple operating system versions. Making their life more miserable.
