Blah it's still cold enough damn you.

My grandmother used to reference Airplane, which is the only reason I recognize that line.

Thanks so much for the grandmother thing...really made my evening!:(

And considering I'm probably older that your grandmother...OY!

;)

Nooo... my grandmother was awesome, and I highly doubt you are older than her. She would have been 94 :( at this point. I mainly started the post to complain about it still being cold in pockets of Southern California.

Many friends of mine in Dallas have reported being without power for a few days (mostly in older sections of town, with overhead power lines and large mature trees.) One friend reported all the gas stations near him are out, and my mom said the grocery store was out of milk and bread. Not sure if it's people hoarding, or if there's an actual shortage because it's difficult to get supplies in. I-35 was shut down for over a day I think, due to the ice. I've seen lots of pics on Facebook of trees being taken to the ground by the weight of the ice. Most of my friends and former coworkers have been staying home and working remotely where possible. One who did go in said "Apparently I failed the IQ test. I'm the only one here."

Plain and simply? You don't. All you can do is brace for the worst in the small amount of time you've got, then spend a few months getting everything back to normal.

The best example I can come up with for this is the blizzard of '93. Down here, even a half inch of snow is a huge, HUGE deal. Because we don't have any sort of infrastructure to deal with icy conditions, any type of accumulation on the roads ends up stranding loads of people who can't get out and drive due to dangerous conditions. A half inch of snow in the right (or wrong) weather means school and business closures across the board.

...so imagine what happens when we suddenly get two feet of snow dumped on us overnight. To cut a long story short, some places were without power nearly three months later.

So if you're not prepared for it, all you can do is suffer through and fix the damage later.

Yeah, I really feel for you in the south. We at least have the infrastructure to deal with it. It has been big news on our national news cast so I have seen the carnage it is wreaking. Bad enough when you have to go without for days, let alone for months. Hopefully it will end soon and get back to some kind of normal.

Even before you listed in a later post where you were, I knew. My friend lives in Okotoks and I'm on the BC Coast. I like to call him and complain about the frost that finally took out my strawberries last week. I don't get a lot of sympathy. However, I did hear the lovely sound of kids playing ice hockey on real ice coming from next door... not something you get around her very often. I have to assume it's a flooded rink, and not a pond. So at least we've had a taste of real winter this year.

You are use to rain and slushy snow at best. My wife lived in Coquitlam for many years and told me all about her many years of winter there. You even made the national news here with your weather which is extremely unusual. Ah, the sound of kids on ice rinks. Actually been to cold here for them to maintain the outdoor ones, so they are currently closed. Finally warmed up today to a balmy -14.

We went to go put gas tonight, and they made it so it was very, very, very slow. Man, there was TONS of cars trying to fill up.

There IS a shortage. You can't hoard milk, it goes bad too quickly to do so since they all have one to two week expiration dates (which ARE more or less accurate on milk bottles).

Our Wal-Mart is SO empty right now, we had to buy generic tortilla chips. :D Literally the only ones they had. It's shelf stable though and you don't cook it, and that's probably why most people were grabbing for stuff like that while things like tuna were of excess ability.

No schools are open again tomorrow. My UPS package from Friday is still at the DFW airport.

Yep, I live in Grand Prairie, the middle of DFW, and things have been crazy since Friday. The roads were pretty clear today for the most part, but bridges and overpasses still have ice. School will be back in session tomorrow, but many districts are opening late. My office was closed Friday and today due to the weather. It really is not that bad weather wise, but this area has no idea how to deal with ice. It really does literally shut the city down when this happens.

We're experiencing one of those weird Colorado nights where it is getting warmer during the night then it was during the day in Monday. About 6Pm it was 19 or so, now at midnight, it's 28. We're going to be above freezing for the first time in a week this week.

-8 this morning, got up to about 20 degrees in the afternoon. Fun fun fun. Especially in a front wheel drive Honda Civic with no snow tires. :D At least it has ABS, thats good.

Beats my sister up at college, -12 which doesn't go much over 0 in the afternoon
