-31 Celsius or -43 with wind chill this morning. -38 Celsius or -52 with wind chill couple hours away. Heard on our national news this evening that -38 was the coldest spot on the planet today.

Went to take son to school and when I walked out the door, the cold air actually hurt to breath. Supposed to be colder this evening at - 35 Celsius. Guess I will bring in the brass monkey.

Where are you? That is way worse than the Front Range of Colorado.

Central Alberta. From what I understand from the weather people the arctic cold front is socked right in on top of us. Will be with us for about a week. We really tend to take it in stride as we see these kind of temps at least once or twice every winter. Not usually this early though. Pretty ugly weather in the states right now as well, especially places that do not see low temps either, like Texas and such.

I have a job where I am outside for most of my 7-8 hr shift. Last night seemed to be the worst out of the last three nights this week of -0 temps. Last night it just seemed to go right through me.

Have one more night to work tonight.

Good news is, my iPhone 5S worked perfectly all three nights when I had to use it. Cold didn't seem to affect it one bit other than having to turn touch ID off, it was too cold to read my prints.

Having spent the first nearly three decades of my life in Western NY, I figured I've paid my snowy cold weather dues...

It's presently a blustery 70 degrees right now in sunny Tampa and is only supposed to reach a high of 80. There's no forecast of precipitation so I'm forced to deal with that damn bright sun all day long. Damn..might actually need to use some sunscreen today.:D

And people actually ask me why wouldn't I ever want to move back to Buffalo...

19 F here, no snow on the road anymore, but still all over the place.

My favorite thing about it is that we have this area where they've just been piling dirt and rocks for years and years now. It looks like this right now:

Weather folks predicted snow last night, now they're saying tonight. As a precaution, Texas drivers have agreed to suspend their ability to drive as a collective.

Both my wife and I had lived here before, but when we moved back about 3 years ago, there was a threat of snow in Houston and there were runs on the store, as if we were going to be stranded in our homes for a week. Amusing. :)

It is currently 0 and our high is only supposed be 12 F. The weather reports are saying we won't get out of the teens until Tuesday.

Also in central Alberta here! It's been a rather nasty start to winter between all the snow we got and now the frigid temps! We're in for a long winter.:D

-33 Celsius when I left for work this morning. We've had 80 CM of snow so far, can hardly wait for winter to hit. We usually don't see this cold and big snow till January/February.

Gotta feel for some of the southern states. At least here in Alberta we are use to this kind of weather. Still wreaks havoc here mind you, but nowhere near what I am seeing on the news for the states that do not normally get this kind of weather.

How do you prepare for something you very rarely see?

Plain and simply? You don't. All you can do is brace for the worst in the small amount of time you've got, then spend a few months getting everything back to normal.

The best example I can come up with for this is the blizzard of '93. Down here, even a half inch of snow is a huge, HUGE deal. Because we don't have any sort of infrastructure to deal with icy conditions, any type of accumulation on the roads ends up stranding loads of people who can't get out and drive due to dangerous conditions. A half inch of snow in the right (or wrong) weather means school and business closures across the board.

...so imagine what happens when we suddenly get two feet of snow dumped on us overnight. To cut a long story short, some places were without power nearly three months later.

So if you're not prepared for it, all you can do is suffer through and fix the damage later.

Even before you listed in a later post where you were, I knew. My friend lives in Okotoks and I'm on the BC Coast. I like to call him and complain about the frost that finally took out my strawberries last week. I don't get a lot of sympathy. However, I did hear the lovely sound of kids playing ice hockey on real ice coming from next door... not something you get around her very often. I have to assume it's a flooded rink, and not a pond. So at least we've had a taste of real winter this year.
